Changing IP address on client

2000-10-10 Thread Jim Grisham

I had to change the IP Address on my Laptop a month ago, and have not
backed it up since then. I can't seem to edit Retrospect's clinet
info to tell it that my IP has changed, without deleting the old
entry first. I tried just adding it, but Retrospect said that there
was a duplicate activator code(of course, since it is the same
machine).

Anyone know of a way to realize that my laptop still exists?

Thanks,

Jim

Re: Hubs/switches

2000-09-16 Thread Jim Grisham

A autosensing hub has a built-in 2 port switch. Any 100Mbps ports are repeated
together, as are the 10Mbps ports. The built in switch connects the 100Mb
group to the 10Mb group.

Thanx for your input. What exactleyt are you saying!?

We used to had that problem and it turned out that Mac OS was the failing
part. We bought a 24 port Intel 10/100 switch and Mac OS got all screwed
when it came to AppleTalking. I eventually solved it by putting a "software
beak" making 100 Mbit computers run at only 10 MBit.

This problem does not occur when choosing switches from D-Link! So I bought
 a 24 port D-Link swich... (We're expanding and needed it anyway.) I haven't
made any research wethere the "breaked computers" would work at 100 MBit now.

We have bought loads of new computers lateley and the problem occured when
mixing commputers running at only 10 MBit like our ISDN Quadra 900. :-)

Some time ago there was a question on this list that concerned the
use of a 10/100 switch or hub. There was a reply stating that a dual
speed hub would only work at the speed of the slowest connected
device. So a mix of 10 and 100 devices would cause all to run at only
 10 mbps.

At the time I was dubious of this and have since looked into the
question and while there may indeed be some hubs with this
limitation, a modern autosensing dual speed hub will allow each
device to run at its max speed, just as a switch will do, although
without the other advantages of a switch of course, but they are
 cheaper.

Just thought I'd like to clear that up.

Re: G3/Sony DAT

Ken,

I believe that our G3 Server(MT) has a Sony DAT drive, with Apple supplied
bezel.

I'd like to put a Sony ???9000 (DDS3) DAT in a beige G3. Anyone know
if Apple ever did a bezel for that model that would work over the
Sony drive? Other Mac servers have utilised the HP DAT, but the
lights etc are different on the Sony and I just don't know if Apple
ever even fitted a DAT to the G3 server and if so was it a Sony. I
 know they have used Sonys.

 Thanks

The drivers are available, at least for the smaller model, mhich comes
bundled with retrospect. Our press has one connected to a G4.

Last I heard, the drivers were not available for the Mac. It's not a very

Onstream if you're addressing smaller backup needs (20GB).

OnStream is a spin off from Philips Electronics.

You can find out about their drives and ADR technology from:

 http://www.onstream.com

OK, so the tapes are called ADR. I downloaded the whitepapers and will take
 a look...

The reason I ask is that I haven't seen them around in any catalogue from
all the large mailorder companies and there have been no disussion (or
little???) regarding this technology on this list... That makes me a little
sceptic, though the price / data seemed really interresting.

The disscussion: Either no-one are using them or there are loads of
OnStream/ADR users on this list and no-one is ever encounter any
 problems... ;-)

Back-up is important stuff and if stuffes are cheap a good solution will
turn to a poor in no time... VXA seemed interresting as well.

 thanx,

Re: onstream deal??

But who ever would want to use any backup program OTHER than Retrospect
on Mac OS? ;)

Jim

Eric Ullman said, in a previous message:

Retrospect for Mac OS and Windows actually use their own custom drivers,
 built right into the software.

On the Mac, we write pretty much the only drivers available for tape drives.
With Windows, Retrospect does not require (or use) the manufacturer's or
Microsoft's driver -- we support the device directly.

As always, a complete list of supported devices is available on the Dantz
 website. http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=compatibility_list
