Andy's FAQ is great, as is Mike's. You can find links to both of them at
http://www.cdrcentral.com/community/misc.html.

http://www.cdrcentral.com/community/ is a pretty good resource in general. Remember
that not all drives will support all the packet writing needs of everyone's favorite
backup solution :-)

At the moment the Imation 8x20 is an unbelievable value. It uses the Plextor 8x20
mechanism and is available for $200 at Best Buy. It was available at CompUSA for
$149 after rebate for a few days. See
http://dealmac.com/articles/2118/2/11025.html
Maybe the price will drop again.

For more info on Plextor, and other, mechanisms read EMedia at
http://www.emedialive.com/ Those
guys know (and care) more about CDR than is healthy.

Take care,

Dan

You probably won't find such a list.

The "manufacturers" (branders?) will use whatever drive mechanism for which
they can get a good deal at the time they need to make the deal.

Computer makers do the same thing with hard drives and some other parts.

Brad.

I found the list of acceptable CD-RW mechanisms that will work with
Retrospect Express on the Dantz website.

Now is there a list somewhere that tells you what mechanisms are being
used in various company's models.

When I visit the sites they say they manufactured their product but my
research tells me that in most cases the inside mechanisms came from
somewhere else.

The name and number of that mechanism would sure be a help. Hopefully
there is a master list somewhere in this big wide world.

Thanks

Bruce

Be very careful. I have an APS drive that doesn't work well with Retrospect
at all. Avoid Yamaha S6416 mechanisms, which APS has used in the past. Be
sure to check the list of qualified drive mechanisms on the Dantz web site.
