Github user felixcheung commented on the issue: https://github.com/apache/spark/pull/14639 but to keep in mind, currently even spark.master can change while in-flight - doesn't seem like Spark Scala code prevents that - we could get some very wrong values. Github user zjffdu commented on the issue: https://github.com/apache/spark/pull/14639 Thanks @sun-rui, `EXISTING_SPARKR_BACKEND_PORT` do indicate cluster mode indirectly for now. It succeeded just due to it already download spark in cache dir. I push another commit to fix the issue. Overall, this PR resolve 3 things. * Cache dir issue in mac os x * Don't download spark when it is cluster mode. The key thing is that we should pass SparkConf from JVM to R, otherwise `master` and `deployMode` in `sparkR.session` will always be empty. * `appName` should be empty by default, otherwise we can not override in spark-submit throught arguments `--name` --- If your project is set up for it, you can reply to this email and have your reply appear on GitHub as well. Github user shivaram commented on the issue: https://github.com/apache/spark/pull/14639 @zjffdu Thanks for clarifying -- I now remember that in the YARN cluster mode there is no `SPARK_HOME` set. However in this case the JVM comes up first and the R process then connects to it. So in such cases we should never have to download Spark as Spark is already running.
