Re: [RDD] USB Sound
Hi, Looking at the manual, I suspect that it should work OK. It seems that it is a standard plug and pray USB sound card. I wouldn’t like to say for definite though. It seems that there is not a driver for the sound card listed on the downloads page so you should be OK. I will bow to somebodies knowledge of actually using this mixer though. D do have a forum on their website so it might be worth posting a question there as well. [RDD] USB Sound
Can anyone advise about using Rivendell with the Airence mixer from D? It allows up to 4 channels of sound from a single USB connection. I've successfully used it on a Windows XP machine with no problems at all and it avoided the need for any soundcards to be fitted to a PC as the mixer does everything the soundcard would normally do. Just wondered if it would work with Rivendell or indeed if anyone used it this way. https://d-r.nl/airence-usb.html I'm aware that the software it comes with (eg studio clock and level meters) wouldn't work as that's a Windows program, but not bothered about that. ___ Rivendell-dev mailing list Rivendell-dev@lists.rivendellaudio.org http://caspian.paravelsystems.com/mailman/listinfo/rivendell-dev
Re: [RDD] USB sound card issues
Hi, I've been able to run multiple sound cards with ALSA and Rivendell too, and usually with enough attempts I can get USB stuff to work. The biggest issue I run into is having to tweak /etc/asound.conf to lock all the cards down to the same sample rate (very important on cheap cards which like to grab their own sample rate which might be different from other cards on the system) and /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to ensure the cards always come up in the same order. I've also run into difficulties with USB based stuff - while it'll mostly work, even when the ID is set in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, I still find that the USB stuff will sometimes grab a different card ID if the system gets rebooted. This isn't a problem on a demo-type system where you can tweak it if a card ends up with a different ID, or if the USB card is the only audio interface on the system (meaning it'll always get the same card ID), but it is not something I would use on a production system. For a production on-air system, the best in my opinion is to get a decent sound card with multiple outputs. Then you won't run into potential timing/latency issues (that can happen when 2 cards have slightly different clock cycles on their crystals). If you have the funds, an ASI card is one way to go. Otherwise I still recommend that the M-Audio Delta line is a good performer and you can often find these cards on various auction sites for reasonable prices. Re: [RDD] USB sound card issues
overall, it seems like you are doing everything right... I use USB all the time, I just plug it in, and it shows up...unplug it, it goes away... I an not sure what version you are using... IS your computer bios set up to allow/detect USB...(some have options that need to be turned on and off) If you plug anything into the computer (flash drive, etc.) do they show up? Is the USB the only sound device?, is there on-board audio, (if there is, turn that on, and see if it helps) as far as the 1010, wouldn't hurt, as you get a bunch of in's and outs, that remain static...(although at that point, you will want to remove the on-board and other audio cards if you really don't need them)... [RDD] USB sound card issues
So I just tried doing the second ALSA device on that old laptop, and it worked! I tried it both with and without jackd and it worked both ways. The funny part is that as a test I configured the main log to play through jack to the first ALSA device, Aux 1 to play out of second ALSA device direct, then Aux 2 to play out of the first ALSA device direct (bypassing Jack) and all three played at the same time! I guess Jack does not lock out it's ALSA device. One thing I DID have to do to get it to work: Perhaps because I did all this with the root login, but rdalsaconfig built the file /etc/asound.conf, which rivendell didn't see, but then when I sim-linked it (ln -s /etc/asound.conf .asound.conf) to .asound.conf in my home directory and restarted the rivendell daemons, it only then worked. BTW, this old laptop is really old! it's an old 1.2 Ghz P3, and it seems to run Rivendell just fine. All three logs played, and sequed perfectly at the same time. Rivendell was otherwise a bit sluggish, but very usable. Note I don't have a very big library on this machine (unlike unlike our real radio station with thousands of entries). I DID get my Raspberry Pi 2, so maybe it is worth compiling Rivendell for it and see how it does, as I'm sure a quad core, overclock 1 Ghz Arm should be able to outperform this old laptop, even if Xorg isn't accelerated on it. Re: [RDD] USB sound card issues
Sorry, I replied before thinking. The thing is, the sound card shouldn't work in Audacity if Rivendell is using it... so my thought was that rdalsaconfig hadn't configured it. But it occurred to me that you probably need to stop and restart the Rivendell daemons for the new configuration to take effect. Have you tried that?
