If you can still get hold of the M-audio 2496 card grab it quick. I've had one
for ages and it's been flawless. They have a very good reputation both on the
audio and MIDI sides.

Say you have a poem and I have a tune.
Exchange them and we can both have a poem, a tune, and a song.

I've been successfully using a firewire card for a few years already on
different Linux systems.
My card is Edirol-FA66.
On the FFADO project page you may find cards which are fully supported
(along with others reported as working or partially supported):

http://ffado.org/?q=devicesupport/list

If you're looking for a firewire device, I would recommend fa-66, however
there are a few more out there working reliable and stable as well.

Personally, I've had much better results out of USB MIDI dongles than with
internal cards. Out of three cards I've used, all three have had their MIDI
driver broken by routine maintenance updates of the kernel. My USB dongle,
however, has never failed to work perfectly.

Mine was discontinued a long time ago, so I can't make specific
recommendations as to what new options are available out there. In general,
though, the USB audio driver, which includes USB MIDI support, seems to be
more solid than average.

Any of the M-Audio or RME PCI cards can handle this (Firewire device
support is limited on Linux). There are also dedicated external MIDI
adaptors like M-Audio MIDISport 1x1 that can taking standard MIDI In
and send it via USB to your machine.

[Rosegarden-user] MIDI card for Linux

2012-01-02 Thread Christopher Howard
I know this isn't a Linux support forum, but are any of the Linux users
happy with a particular sound card that provides incoming MIDI support?
I have an old CASIO keyboard with standard IN/OUT MIDI ports, and wanted
to try streaming MIDI into Rosegarden.
