Re: [Rosegarden-user] Audio Distros

2013-09-09 Thread Brian Clem
Its a lightweight music distro so running LXDE makes it fast to me. I
understand the desire to run 86_64 software but the 32bit is probably
better for compatibility (at least that used to be the case... maybe not so
much anymore).

My recommendation is to open the software sources and check the bandshed
repos. The kernels are there and grab the 3.6.6_rt pae kernel. Or the 3.8
pae. I just built a kernel from 3.6.6_rt to 3.10.10-rc7-rt. They explain
it in the boards. Trulan has great info there ... I am making kernels that
are awesome by following his directions.

I can run virtualbox 4.2 and then run Windows XP 64 bit. Yes, from this
32bit distro.

So speed is very good. Jack audio server runs super fast with great
reliability.

Also check out KXStudio. If you want 64bit, this is your option, no
question.

I use two different computers for my elementary school classes. Both my

laptop and amdx6 dual boot. Both run AVL 6.0.1b. Desktop also runs 12.04

LTS because I needed smartboard drivers and at the time, 12.04LTS was the

way to go. Since some time, I find AVL 6 works as well. AVL is debian.

Its rock solid and very stable. The laptop also runs the most bleeding edge

ubuntu 13.10 daily.

My reason to have AVL 6 on both computers is because when students are in my

room, its just got to work. And JACK runs much better on AVL. Could be

debain and/or stable branch. Also the people behind AVL are very cool and

support is great. At least the best I have experienced in the computer world.

** Try AVL 6.

Hi David,

I use Xubuntu 12.04 and I am happy with it. My interface is a Focusrite
Scarlett 2i2. There are no stability issues. I use the synths as
DSSI-modules (fluidsynth, hexter, whysynth) for minimum latency and easy
storing/restoring their settings.

- I use the distribution's kernel source with the following tweaks
  for minimum latency:

  make menuconfig
Processor type and features
  Preemption Model: Low-Latency Desktop
  Timer Frequency: 1000 HZ
  make-kpkg clean
  fakeroot make-kpkg -j 4 --initrd --revision=1.0.hm kernel_image kernel_headers

  Then I have 2 .deb-packages that I install with dpkg -i

- I tweak fluidsynth-dssi to run it on 24 instruments at once
  in dssi.h
  #define FSD_CHANNEL_COUNT  25

- I tweak hexter
  in src/hexter.h
  #define HEXTER_DEFAULT_POLYPHONY  32

Regards
Holger

Have you tried Ubuntu Studio? It's tailored and tweaked for audio
production (it uses lowlatency kernel by default, for example). What
sorts of stability issues are you experiencing? I have been using
Ubuntu Studio for several years
