Simpler answer indeed, yes, sorry to waste bandwidth Ed.
Thanks.

Well, something is getting lost in translation.

Let me try to summarize where I thought we were. First of all, you are on the
rpmfusion list asking about if you should get a particular nVidia card to
support
video editing. Various folks responded, including myself. To me, since I do
editing
with an older card, it isn't so important.

Now since you're on the rpmfusion list and you asked the question

"And does the akmod-nvidia work OK with the 1050ti?I've done the song and
dance
previously - I kept getting caught out when the akmod-nvidia was a day or two
behind
kernel updates!"

I then thought I cleared up the confusion between "akmod" and "kmod" since if
you are
using "akmod-nvidia" you *can't* get caught in any way since the purpose of
"akmod-nvidia" is to build the kmod-nvidia packages (which hold the modules
needed
for a kernel) so it matters not if rpmfusion repos have the newest kmod-nvidia.

We then got into discussion on if your card is supported. I probably should
just
have said "Yes, akmod-nvidia supports the new card you want to buy". But, I
think I
gave you too much information. I was *only* trying to describe to you how to
determine what flavor of akmod-nvidia to install for any given HW.

akmod-nvidia (mostly the latest and greatest HW which uses the version 375.66
driver)
akmod-nvidia-340xx (older HW which uses the version 340.102 legacy drivers)
akmod-nvidia-304xx (even older HW which uses the version 304.135 legacy
drivers)

EVERYTHING you need is supplied by rpmfusion. That is the entire reason behind
using
rpmfusion. I assumed (yeah my mistake) was that since you were on this list and
based on your previous comments/questions I thought you were aware of this.

I'll search Fedora forum (is that the one you meant?).

Whether it is an app issue rather than hw- I really don't know.

nVidia provides (I wouldn't say supply since they have no connection with
rpmfusion)
all the drivers for their HW for anyone to pick up and install.

rpmfusion folks take what nVidia provides and packages it in a convenient
format for
folks to install by the standard dnf path. If it were not for rpmfusion you'd
have
to manually do things like blacklist the nouveau driver by manually editing grub
files. The fine folks at rpmfusion make all that unnecessary.

The details of how the fine rpmfusion folks go about the business of creating
akmod-nvidia and updating it as nVidia releases new versions of the drivers is
something I don't have insight toand frankly it is enough for me to call it
"magic". :-)

When I need to know what version of nVidia drivers I should use I consult their
webpage.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html

The current akmod is

Name: akmod-nvidia
Arch: x86_64
Epoch : 2
Version : 375.66
Release : 3.fc25

Which gets me to this page...
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/118290/en-us

And then I would go to the tab "Supported Products" and there is the GeForce
GTX 1050
Ti pretty much at the top of the list.

Sure The kmod-nvidia packages on your system contain the actual kernel
modules
for the nvidia cards. With 3 kernels installed on my system I see...

[egreshko@meimei ~]$ rpm -qa | grep ^kmod-nvidia
kmod-nvidia-4.11.4-200.fc25.x86_64-375.66-3.fc25.x86_64
kmod-nvidia-4.11.3-202.fc25.x86_64-375.66-3.fc25.x86_64
kmod-nvidia-4.11.5-200.fc25.x86_64-375.66-3.fc25.x86_64

If you don't have akmod-nvidia installed on your system and you get a kernel
update
from the fedora repo but the rpmfusion doesn't have the corresponding
kmod-nvidia you
will have to wait until they doas you know.

But, if you install the akmod-nvidia package with supports your HW you won't
have to
wait as it will build and install the needed kmod-nvidia when the kernel is
updated.

akmod-nvidia-375.66-3supports the latest nvidia hardware but there are also
other versions to support earlier HW. My older laptop has
akmod-nvidia-340xx-340.102-3 due to the older HW.

All you need do is install the appropriate akmod-nvidia package and the required
dependencies will be installed.

I think it has to do with the difficulty in putting out messages in the
asynchronous
environment in which the packages are built/installed. However, it is easy to
check
if all is well by just doing a "tailf" on /var/cache/akmods/akmods.log during or
after the kernel update and wait for "success" such as this

2017/06/16 08:01:15 akmods: Building and installing nvidia-kmod

I think you are thinking of kmod.

If you run with akmod it will automatically rebuild the kmods for you so you
won't be
caught. The only "downside" is that now with dnf you have to remember that the
rebuild process runs after, and silently, the dnf updates are completed. If you
reboot too quickly the process wouldn't have enough time to finish and when your
reboot you'll have a blank screen for a few minutes while it is rebuilding
againsilently. So, if you forget that you may be inclined to think you've
got a
hung systembut you don't.

Re: New Nvidia card

2017-06-19 Thread Eric Sokolowsky
Using rpmfusion and the akmod-nvidia package reduces the hassle
tremendously. Dnf update just works.

MP4 format.
My suspicion was that the video card interface wasn't keeping up with
the changes I was making (novice not knowing correct way to drive the app),
hence the look for an upgrade.
Not committed to nouveau - but it does remove a lot of hassle with Fedora
upgrading so often?

Simpler question. Is it a fair assumption that the editing software is driving
the card capability directly or using OS calls which may / may not offload
to the card?

I don't use pitivi, but don't know what "crashing all over the place" means.

In an hours use, I am seeing 5 or more instances where the application

to start again.
Hence my look for an alternative.

Looking at Lightworks/ shotcut

Both work fine for me but I must say for the minimal amount of work I do shotcut
works well enough.

Thanks. Shotcut has far fewer deps than Lightworks, which blacklists nouveau.

My assumption (right / wrong?) was that gaming / video editing have
similar needs (colour rendition is not an issue with me)

Guess: GT 710 earlier than GT 750?

You don't say what you already have or what level of video editing you

gaming. I still haven't tried one, but for video display the much
