[RollTideFan] Matt Miller Article
http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20040711/NEWS/407110368/1011 Bama’s Miller finally sees his chance By Cecil Hurt Sports Editor July 11, 2004 TUSCALOOSA | If anyone ever seemed destined to play football for Alabama, it would be Matt Miller. His grandfather played for Alabama. His father played under Coach Paul “Bear" Bryant. His brother played for Alabama. His best friend as a youngster was Brodie Croyle, yet another son of a former Crimson Tide player. All the genetics and all the surroundings made it seem inevitable that Matt Miller would also play for the Crimson Tide, a dream that seems close to coming to fruition for the wide receiver. But, despite the family tradition, it hasn’t been easy. Miller walked on at Alabama after playing quarterback at Southside High School in Gadsden. Like most walk-ons, he’s had his share of tribulations. He’s dealt with four different coaching staffs either as a prospect or a player. He’s changed positions, going from quarterback to wide receiver. Yet every time he felt like he was making a move on the depth chart, his coaches seemed to move elsewhere. “It’s been frustrating because as a walk-on, you’re always at the bottom of the totem pole," Miller said. “I always tried to do better in the little things. I tried to finish first in the runs, or in the weight room, because that’s one of the only ways that a walk-on can get noticed. But it was kind of heartbreaking, because you would show that to one staff, and then they would be gone, and another staff would come in and you start over almost from scratch. Plus, when there is a new staff, the people who have been sort of lackadaisical will get fired up, so the coaches don’t really know who has been working hard all along." Timing finally worked in Miller’s favor last season, when Mike Shula and his staff took over. “Last year was really a good year for me to move to receiver," Miller said. “We had five or six senior receivers who were all good guys, so you knew they’d be playing, but you also knew that there would be a chance when they all left. Even last season, I had worked my way up to second team. When the spring started, I was back on the scout team, but I just took that as a chance to practice one-on-one against the best defensive backs." Finally, Miller started to get noticed. He was moved off the scout team, and back into the receiving rotation. He’s currently listed as the No. 2 split end (behind Matt Caddell) on the depth chart posted on Shula’s Web site. It seems sure that Miller will get some playing time. His goal, though, is to make a substantial impact at a position where the Tide will be inexperienced. That would fulfill what he calls “a lifetime dream." “I was recruited by Middle Tennessee State and some other small schools, but I knew I would end up here," Miller said. “It would have had to be a big Division I program, preferably an SEC team, for me to consider someone else. But if other SEC teams were offering me, then Alabama would probably have offered me, too, so I probably would have ended up here anyway." Miller’s grandfather, Floyd “Bo" Miller, started the tradition in the late 1940s. His son, Noah Dean Miller, played for Paul “Bear" Bryant and was part of Alabama’s 1973 national championship team. Matt’s older brother, Marc Miller, also walked on for UA and is probably best remembered for a blocked punt that set up Alabama’s winning touchdown in the 2001 Independence Bowl. “This is my dream," Miller said. “When I was little, the other kids wanted to be a fireman. I wanted to be an Alabama football player." Miller spent two seasons as a quarterback, but decided to switch to receiver because of the crowded situation at his original position. “Coach [Dennis Franchione] had suggested that I make the move," Miller said. “That staff had noticed me. I set the weight room records for quarterbacks, so they saw that, plus my speed and vertical jump. But they never saw me on the field much. I was behind Tyler Watts, Andrew Zow, Brodie and Spencer Pennington, so I wasn’t getting any reps. “They suggested that I move, and I’m glad I did. I love playing receiver so much more than I did throwing the ball." Miller now figures to be on the receiving end of passes from his childhood friend, Croyle. “Brodie and I were each others’ first best friends," Miller said. “Their house used to be at the [Big Oak] Ranch, and I’d be there every weekend, riding horses or whatever. “So when he throws a pass to me, it’s going to be a great feeling." Miller laughed at the tongue-in-cheek suggestion that he might be Croyle’s “favorite" because of their childhood friendship. “He’s going to throw it to the open receiver," Miller said. “Brodie got a lot of flack last year for locking on one receiver, or having a favorite, and that was absolutely not tr

[RollTideFan] DeMarco Ryans Article
http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20040710/NEWS/407100346/1011 Crimson Tide linebacker is thinking about the bigger picture By Cecil Hurt Sports Editor July 10, 2004 TUSCALOOSA | University of Alabama linebacker DeMeco Ryans would be a natural for the Bronko Nagurski Award in a couple of respects. First, he’s adept enough as a football player to merit consideration. He holds the Alabama single-game record for tackles (25 against Arkansas last year), and may be the headliner for the Crimson Tide defense as he enters his junior season in 2004. Thus, he deserves the watch-list mention he got last week from the Nagurski Award (given by the Football Writers of America to the nation’s best defender, regardless of position) and will probably be a viable candidate, regardless of position, on statistics alone. It’s not just performance, though. Ryans also has an attitude that is something of a throwback to the Nagurski days, when players seemed less concerned with attracting individual attention. “The way I look at individual awards is this," Ryans said. “If I go out with a team attitude and give a team effort, then the awards will come. Awards are not something I strive for. I strive to make the team better. I have to think about the bigger picture." Ryans carries that attitude even when talking to Crimson Tide fans. “People would come up to me last year and say 'I recognize you’ and they would want to talk about the tackle record," Ryans said. “I didn’t have much to say. I’d just tell them that the defense shouldn’t have been on the field that much." The low profile suits Ryans. He got some attention as a recruit out of Jess Lanier High School in Bessemer, but wasn’t the Tide’s highest-profile signee. That made little difference to the academic All-SEC performer. “I’ve never been out for myself when playing sports," he said. I want to win. But you can’t win playing by yourself. It’s not a one-man sport like tennis or golf. You’ve got to have 10 other men on defense and 11 on offense who all have a team attitude." Ryans stopped short of saying that the Crimson Tide lacked that unity in last year’s 4-9 season, but did admit that the long year took a toll. “It was very tough," Ryans said. “I had been through something similar in high school and that helped me deal with it, but it was still rough. You keep going out and playing to the best of your ability, and you keep coming up short every time, and naturally it hurts. “I’m just taking it all as motivation. When I think about the Arkansas game, I don’t think about making a lot of tackles. I think that we were one play short. So I do all the extra things like working out, so I will be able to make the play that takes us over the edge." If Alabama is going to reverse things this season, the linebacking corps will play a strong part. With Ryans, Freddie Roach, Cornelius Wortham, Juwan Garth and Terrence Jones, among others, the group appears both talented and deep. Ryans will be switching roles again this season, moving back to the strong side after spending a year as a weak-side linebacker. “When I came in, I was actually a middle linebacker," Ryans said. “Then, when the season came, I was playing strong side. Then when Brooks left, they moved me to weak-side to replace him. Now, I’m back at strong. “It really doesn’t matter to me. I don’t prefer a position as long as I’m out there." The quiet Ryans may be shy when it comes to personal achievements, but he’s not bashful about the team goals for the coming season. “My goals are, first, for this team to come together as a team and as a family," Ryans said. “Then, I want to go out and win all the games. I don’t want us to come up short again. If we do that, then hopefully that will put us in the spot to play for the national championship." The words “national championship" haven’t been connected with the 2004 Alabama team often, but Ryans said he wouldn’t back down from that goal. “I’m not just going out and trying to win six games so we can go to some bowl," Ryans said. “I want to go to the biggest bowl of all." [RollTideFan] Big Al's Revenge?
Bama hopes to bring Hawaii to Tuscaloosa After consecutive visits to play Warriors, Alabama working on home game against Hawaii for 2006 Friday, July 09, 2004 By THOMAS MURPHY Sports Reporter The bowl-probation relationship the University of Alabama established with the University of Hawaii two summers ago might yield a trip to the mainland for the Rainbow Warriors in 2006. Alabama athletics director Mal Moore and Hawaii AD Herman Frazier are close to completing a deal for the teams to meet in Tuscaloosa early in the 2006 season, the Honolulu Advertiser reported Thursday. Frazier and Moore have held ongoing discussions about scheduling more games between the programs since the Crimson Tide reached an agreement to play in Honolulu in 2002. That game was set up as a reward of sorts for Dennis Franchione's second Tide team after Alabama was hit with a two-year bowl ban in February 2002. The current negotiations could also include one or two more trips to Hawaii for Alabama, which split two games against the Warriors. If the two sides reach agreement on the 2006 game, Hawaii would tentatively be the first visitor in the remodeled Bryant-Denny Stadium. The 2002 Alabama team took advantage of the 13th game on its schedule to notch a 21-16 win and secure its NCAA-best 27th 10-win season. The 4-9 2003 team simply extended its misery with a 37-29 loss. Hawaii coach June Jones said a road game at Alabama would be a "huge opportunity" for his program. He told the Advertiser the guarantee Hawaii would receive would be "close to a million dollars" for a game in 2006. __ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List "Welcome to RollTideFan!
