http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050712/SPORTS0601/507120341/1345/SPORTS UT hire sure to raise Tide's ire Kramer's daughter new assistant tickets director By CHRIS LOW Staff Writer KNOXVILLE The Alabama conspiracy theorists will have a field day with the University of Tennessee's latest hire in the athletics department. Sara Gray Kramer, the daughter of former SEC Commissioner Roy Kramer, started work this week as UT's assistant director of tickets. She was previously at Central Michigan as the assistant director of athletic development in charge of the Chippewa Club. Attorneys representing former Alabama assistant coaches Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams have charged that Roy Kramer was part of a conspiracy along with Tennessee Coach Phillip Fulmer and the NCAA in helping to land the Crimson Tide on probation. A Tuscaloosa judge threw out most of the case last week, dismissing claims of conspiracy and negligence, as well as Cottrell's claims against the NCAA. What was left of the case was scheduled to go to trial yesterday, but was delayed by Hurricane Dennis weather concerns. I'm not into conspiracies. I'm into hiring the best people, said Tennessee Athletics Director Mike Hamilton, adding that Gray Kramer was hired a few weeks ago. Hamilton said John Currie, UT's associate athletics director for external operations, made the decision to hire Gray Kramer based purely on her qualifications. Hamilton noted she had applied for several other jobs at UT in the past. Several others were in the running for the job, including Danny Burnley, who has worked in the UT ticket department for more than 20 years. Gray Kramer will work under Chris Besanceney, who came to UT last year as assistant athletics director for tickets. Gray Kramer was Central Michigan's athletics ticket manager for three years before being promoted to assistant director of athletic development in 2002. After stepping down as SEC commissioner, Roy Kramer retired to Rarity Bay, a golf resort just south of Knoxville. He's originally from Maryville, Tenn. [RollTideFan] BCS replaces AP poll with new Harris ranking
BCS replaces AP poll with new Harris ranking Panel of former coaches, players, administrators, media to vote on top 25 Updated: 2:51 p.m. ET July 11, 2005 DALLAS - The maligned Bowl Championship Series has responded to the defection of the Associated Press poll. The new Harris Interactive College Football poll will replace the AP poll in the new BCS standings formula, BCS coordinator and Big 12 Conference commissioner Kevin Weiberg announced Monday. Harris Interactive possesses a wealth of experience in the polling business, Weiberg said. We are very comfortable with the approach Harris has taken in constructing this new poll. Known for the Harris Poll and for pioneering Internet-based research methods, Harris Interactive selected a panel comprised of former coaches, players, administrators and media with a goal of 114 participants to rank the top 25 teams on a weekly basis during the 2005 season. The names of all voters will be released prior to the start of the season. We are very pleased that our more than 40 years of polling experience will add independence, objectivity, and statistically valid sampling principles to the BCS formula, Harris Interactive president and CEO Gregory Novak said. The Harris college football poll will stand independently and first will be released September 25, approximately one month into the season. It will be included as part of the first BCS rankings released Oct. 17. Individual votes will be made public in the Harris Interactive poll after Dec. 4, when the BCS teams are determined. The AP announced in December it would no longer have its media-based college football poll included in the BCS rankings after another season that ended in controversy. Southern California, Oklahoma and Auburn were three of five Division I-A unbeaten teams and Texas overtook California in the final poll to earn the last BCS at-large spot as a result of lobbying by the Longhorns and peculiar voting. The Charlotte Observer pulled out of the AP poll after the Texas-California controversy and Sen. Dick Ackerman, the Republican leader of the California Senate, called for the dissolution of the BCS. USC and Oklahoma finished 1-2 in the final BCS poll and played in the Orange Bowl for the national championship. However, Auburn -- which had four players selected in the first round of the NFL draft -- Utah and Boise State also were unbeaten. Two years ago, USC was the top-ranked team in both polls but third in the BCS rankings and excluded from the BCS title game. The Trojans won the Rose Bowl and were voted No. 1 by AP pollsters. LSU defeated Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl and was voted No. 1 in the coaches poll and final BCS rankings, creating a split national champion - precisely what the BCS was developed to avoid. The BCS standings will continue to be computed in the same manner, with equal weight given to three components: a teams percentage of points in the USA Today Coaches poll, a teams percentage of points in the new Harris Interactive poll and an average of six computer ratings (Anderson Hester, Jeff Sagarin, Richard Billingsley, Colley Matrix, Kenneth Massey and Peter Wolfe). BCS members include the Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10 and Southeastern Conferences as well as Notre Dame. The format calls for the championship game to be rotated among the Orange, Rose, Sugar and Fiesta Bowls. © 2005 SportsTicker © 2005 MSNBC.com URL: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8543965/ ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

[RollTideFan] New affidavits continue to disparage Culpepper
http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050706/NEWS/507060339/1011 New affidavits continue to disparage Culpepper By Christopher Walsh Sports Writer July 06, 2005 Email this story. TUSCALOOSA | New affidavits in the $60 million defamation lawsuit field by two former University of Alabama assistant football coaches against the National Collegiate Athletic Association and others further question the integrity and character of recruiting analyst Tom Culpepper. Both Paul Finebaum, a popular radio host in the Southeast, and Bruce Graham, a freelance writer who worked with Culpepper at College Sports Southeast, described numerous unsubstantiated allegations Culpepper made against Alabama and specifically recruiting coordinator Ronnie Cottrell. Finebaum, who was listed as a defendant in the initial lawsuit, recalled 22 allegations by Culpepper -- ranging from Cottrell bought high school players to having a gambling problems that former Alabama booster Logan Young was financing and/or covering -- that were often discussed on his show. This became a regular and frequent topic of conversation on my program from approximately August 2000 until I came to realize that Tom Culpepper had ulterior motives and was making damaging statements with little or no regard to the truth about Ronnie Cottrells involvement with recruiting violations in the Memphis area, the affidavit said. Graham listed 13 allegations that Culpepper made and spread to many SEC and NCAA coaches, and called his behavior psychotic. From my personal knowledge and work experience with Tom Culpepper, I would describe him as an egotistical paranoid schizophrenic with delusions of grandeur and a pathological liar, Grahams affidavit read. Tom Culpepper sincerely thinks that he is smarter and better than anyone else. Tom Culpepper has a 'Jekyll Hyde personality and he has regularly threatened physical harm to myself and others. When his temper flares, his eyes water and he begins to enrage. In September of 1999, in the CSSE parking lot, he blocked my car with his vehicle in the parking lot and when I politely asked him to move it, he refused and threatened to beat me up. Graham said Culpepper had threatened to physically harm others in the media as well, including Rodney Orr of TiderInsider, who recorded a conversation between them that has been entered as evidence. Culpeppers attorneys have filed a motion asking the tape declared inadmissible. The affidavits were filed to rebut statements made during a summary judgment hearing in Tuscaloosa County Circuit Court on June 23. A ruling on the motion to dismiss has yet to be made. Meanwhile, Culpeppers attorneys filed a motion Tuesday to force Cottrell to produce documents regarding loans he received from Young. At issue is a $10,000 loan Cottrell was asked about during his deposition. Cottrell responded to a June request for documents, but the defense maintains that the information is incomplete. Judge Steve Wilson has yet to rule on another motion to compel which would force production of a document plaintiffs believe will show that the NCAA is paying Culpeppers legal fees. The jury trial is scheduled to begin Monday. Already the NCAA filed its list of both witnesses and exhibits it may introduce in presenting its case. Among the 33 witnesses, who could provide either live testimony or though a deposition, are numerous NCAA employees including former Committee on Infractions chairman Thomas Yeager, investigator Richard Johanningmeier and former enforcement staff director Mark Jones. Listed from Alabama are director of athletics Mal Moore, associate athletics director and senior woman administrator Marie Robbins, former facility advisor and current COI chairman Gene Marsh, UA attorney Stan Murphy and former assistant football coaches Jeff Rouzie and Dabo Swinney. Others of note include former SEC commissioner Roy Kramer, SEC investigator Bill Sievers, former college football coach John Mackovic, Memphis-based assistant U.S. Attorney Fred Godwin (who prosecuted Young), and journalists Ray Melick and Kevin Scarbinsky. The defense has more than 300 exhibits, everything from interviews and transcripts to newspaper stories and 20 charts to be used as visual aids. Among them are numerous pieces of evidence that were used in the Young criminal case in Memphis, and an interview summary with former Alabama recruit Kenny Smith, who is currently suing Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer. The plaintiffs contend that Culpepper, Fulmer and others conspired to destroy the Alabama football program by targeting Cottrell and Ivy Williams. On Tuesday, they filed a response to the NCAAs objection regarding the latest attempts to force Fulmer to give a deposition. [RollTideFan] Former Alabama booster claims he never bought players
This is a printer friendly version of an article from www.datelinealabama.com Article published Jul 6, 2005 Former Alabama booster claims he never bought players The Associated Press Former Alabama football booster Logan Young denies ever buying a player for the Crimson Tide despite his conviction in federal court for bribing a high school coach to get a top recruit. Young, a Memphis businessman, also told The Birmingham News that allegations by Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer that he had steered a number of prospects to Alabama in the 1990s were preposterous. Young, 64, was convicted of paying Memphis high school coach Lynn Lang to steer recruit Albert Means to Alabama. Lang testified that Young paid $150,000 to land Means. In June, Young was sentenced to six months in prison and six months home confinement to be served after his release from prison, followed by two years of supervised release. Young, who remains free pending appeal, said he's pleased with the sentence but still maintains his innocence. I didn't do it, but what the jury said I did is all that matters, he told News columnist Kevin Scarbinsky in a story Wednesday. I was tickled pink with the sentence. That's the least it could have been. He also said he is confident he will be healthy enough to get a kidney transplant by the end of August. Alabama cut its ties to Young as an NCAA investigation involving him led to sanctions against the Tide football program. But Young disputed former Alabama assistant coach and player Jeff Rouzie's statement that legendary Tide coach Bear Bryant once warned his coaches to keep their distance from Young. In a column last week, Scarbinsky said Rouzie confirmed that he made the statement to the NCAA in 2001. That's not true. That's a lie, Young said. ... I know Coach Bryant didn't say it. The Memphis businessman said he had a special relationship with Bryant. Young, who did not testify in his criminal trial in Memphis, denied some of the allegations Fulmer made to NCAA investigators and then-Southeastern Conference commissioner Roy Kramer, including claims that Young bought a truck for defensive linemen Michael Myers and a house for defensive lineman Kindal Moorehead or his mother. It makes Fulmer look like a bigger liar than he already is, Young said. He's over the edge. He threw everything on the wall and hoped some of it stuck. Fulmer's attorney, Jeff Hagood, said Wednesday that Fulmer wasn't the only SEC coach who reported wrongdoing in Alabama's recruiting in the Memphis area. He said former Florida coach Steve Spurrier, now at South Carolina, as well as Arkansas coach Houston Nutt, former Mississippi coach David Cutcliffe and a whole bunch of other coaches for a long time said the same thing. I pity Mr. Young and I hope his health improves, Hagood said. But as I recall he had a bunch of fine lawyers and a fine trial judge and a jury of his peers listened for about a week and found him guilty in a couple of hours. And Phillip Fulmer sure didn't testify at his trial. The NCAA's findings against Alabama didn't include many of the allegations lodged by Fulmer, which have come to light in a defamation lawsuit filed by two former Tide assistants in Tuscaloosa against the NCAA and others. That trial is set to begin Monday. --- Information from: Birmingham News Company, ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

Re: Re: [RollTideFan] Re: All Time Favorites
From: Rick McMahan [EMAIL PROTECTED] This brings up a question or two. Who were the other star QB's on the team when Lewis won the starting job? Offa the top o' my head I donut recall. I do seem to remember reading that Walter Lewis was one of Coach Bryant's favorites. (I guess Coach didn't know about the Seven Oceans, but I digress.) Wasn't Lewis the QB for Coach Bryant in his final season in 1982? I'm pretty shore he was. Here's one of my favorite Walter Lewis moments. http://www.mackbrown-texasfootball.com/pages/winningtrads/bowlgames/82cotton.html 1982 Cotton Bowl The spotlight shone directly on third-ranked Alabama and its head coach Paul Bear Bryant in the days leading up to the 1982 Cotton Bowl. A 28-17 win over Auburn in the Tides regular-season finale pushed Bryant ahead of Amos Alonzo Stagg with 315 wins. On top of Bryants record-setting number of victories, Alabama was looking for its seventh straight post-season triumph. But to do it, the Tide had to get past the sixth-ranked Longhorns. Alabama had never beaten Texas in seven tries and Bryant had accomplished the feat just once in nine games, a 34-21 triumph in 1956 when he was the coach at Texas AM. But on this day, the Tide appeared to have UTs number. Jesse Bendross grabbed a Walter Lewis pass and scored from six yards out to cap a seven-play, 82-yard drive midway through the second quarter. After 25 minutes of scoreless play, Alabama extended its lead to 10-0 following a 24-yard Peter Kim field goal with 12:27 left in the contest. Jitter Fields got things going for Texas on the ensuing kickoff, scrambling 22 yards to spot the ball at the Texas 40. In five plays, Longhorns QB Robert Brewer marched his squad to the Alabama 30, UTs deepest penetration of the afternoon. But a pair of incompletions left Texas staring at a third-and-10, and Brewer marched to the line ready to run a sprint-out pass. Brewer got to the line of scrimmage and didnt like what he saw of the Alabama defensive alignment, so he called timeout to confer with Fred Akers. The timeout produced the perfect call: a quarterback draw. The ball was snapped and Alabama came with the all-out blitz. Brewer calmly found the seam and raced untouched to the endzone and the Longhorns trailed 10-7. Within five minutes, Texas was driving again. Starting from their own 20, the Longhorns moved 72-yards in 10 plays and found themselves at the Alabama eight with less than three minutes to play. On the 11th and final play of the drive, Terry Orr punched in his first touchdown of the year, scoring from eight yards out to hand Texas its first lead at 14-10. With just over two minutes remaining, there was plenty of time for Alabama to make things interesting. And, on the ensuing kickoff, Joey Jones peeled off a 61-yard return and the Tide were in business at the Texas 38. On the first play, Alabama QB Walter Lewis went for the win, firing the ball downfield toward the goal line. But William Graham picked off the pass and was immediately tackled at the one-yard-line and Texas took over. Three Brewer sneaks moved the ball to the four and a two-yard delay of game penalty moved it back to the two with 56 seconds left. Then, Texas punter John Goodson, standing at the back of the end zone, took the snap and scrambled for eight seconds before stepping out of bounds for the safety. Alabama, out of timeouts, got the ball back with 43 seconds to play, but time ran out and the Longhorns pulled the upset. [RollTideFan] What if Tide hired Tuberville?
What if Tide hired Tuberville? Tuesday, June 28, 2005 8Tub Of all the charges and countercharges in the nearly 3,000 pages of documents released recently in the case of Ronnie Cottrell vs. the NCAA in Tuscaloosa, one of the most titillating comes from Phillip Fulmer. No big surprise there, since the Tennessee coach did more leaking in this case than the Exxon Valdez in Prince William Sound. However, in one of his now-infamous missives to SEC commissioner Roy Kramer, Fulmer said something that got me wondering about what might have been. In a memo dated April 13, 1998, Fulmer details a laundry list of Tide players he believed Memphis booster Logan Young had steered to Alabama. Fulmer indicated Tommy Tuberville, who was at Ole Miss at the time, was aware of these allegations but was reluctant to talk. He won't talk about Logan because he wants the Alabama job, wrote Fulmer. Logan likes Tommy and will let Tommy 'keep a few.' Imagine for a moment if Tuberville had ended up in Tuscaloosa instead of Auburn. Where do you think both programs would be today? Interestingly, Tuberville's name was briefly floated in some circles for the Alabama job when Mike DuBose was hired. It's widely believed he wanted the job and who could blame him? However, Alabama elevated DuBose and the rest is history. At the time of the Fulmer memo, though, DuBose had already been hired and was coming off an appalling 4-7 record in his rookie season -- which included the infamous swing-pass blunder at the end of the 1997 Iron Bowl. The famous Fourth-and-Dumb call cost the Tide an almost sure victory at Jordan-Hare Stadium and there was already talk in some circles DuBose's time could be brief at Alabama if things didn't turn in a hurry. So perhaps Tuberville was thinking Alabama might make a quick change and he'd be considered again. At the time, it's also a fact he had a sharp eye on Auburn as well, perhaps having already met privately with officials about replacing Terry Bowden. Regardless, imagine if Tuberville had ended up in Tuscaloosa. Would it have been a good fit? Would Alabama be in the mess it's in today and would Auburn be on a 15-game winning streak and have one foot on the Tide's throat in this heated rivalry? From this perch, I think Tuberville would have been a better fit for Alabama than Auburn. His effusive personality would have worked well and having grown up in Arkansas, having studied Paul Bryant and having been around another legend like Jimmy Johnson, there is no doubt Alabama football would have prospered. But would the same problems have occurred in Memphis? I don't think so. Even though he was friendly with Young and was acutely aware of the rumors in Memphis, Tuberville would have managed the situation much better than DuBose and his staff. Tuberville is a CEO type of football coach and not likely to be run over like was the case at Alabama following Gene Stallings' retirement. I don't think he would have been as reckless to win and cut any corner like the case with DuBose. Tuberville is a very confident, if not cocky, type of coach. He would have felt there were worlds beyond Alabama, had he been hired there and it not worked out. DuBose knew Alabama was essentially his only shot at being a big-time head coach because the truth of that matter is there wasn't another major Division I-A college that would have hired him (in that regard, nearly identical to Mike Shula). So while much of the infor mation coming out now in public documents has been hashed out for years, the Tuberville nugget was most revealing. Considering he recently signed what amounts to a lifetime contract at Auburn, the odds of Tuberville ever making the trek to Tuscaloosa as head coach now are nil. However, considering Tuberville's enormous success at Auburn and the fact he has beaten Alabama four of the last five -- including three straight at Bryant-Denny Stadium -- one has to imagine a few Tide fans are sorry he's not coaching their team now as opposed to coaching against them. [RollTideFan] Ex-Tide coaches lawsuit at crossroads
http://www.al.com/sports/huntsvilletimes/index.ssf?/base/sports/111951821180550.xmlcoll=1 Ex-Tide coaches lawsuit at crossroads Judge holding hearing on request to dismiss charges Thursday, June 23, 2005 By ALAN CLEMONS [EMAIL PROTECTED] Times Sports Staff TUSCALOOSA -- Attorneys for two former University of Alabama coaches and the NCAA will be in circuit court today for a summary judgment hearing that could affect the coaches' $60 million defamation trial scheduled to begin next month. NCAA officials recently presented a 1,400-page request for dismissal of all or some of the charges leveled by Montgomery attorney Tommy Gallion in a lawsuit filed by Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams. The two former Crimson Tide football coaches claim defamation by the NCAA. The organization alleges their involvement five years ago in the recruitment of Memphis lineman Albert Means violated NCAA rules. Both have denied involvement in illegal recruiting practices. The hearing is scheduled for 3 p.m. before Circuit Judge Steve Wilson, who could dismiss some or all of the charges. The defamation case is scheduled for a jury trial to begin July 11. Gallion on Wednesday said his response to the NCAA's lengthy summary judgment motion was a 1,500-page reply that refuted their specific requests for dismissal. Two weeks ago, the documents in the response briefly were available as public records before Wilson sealed them. Since then, The Huntsville Times, The Birmingham News and The Tuscaloosa News have requested he re-open the documents. Wilson has not ruled on that request. Alabama law says a dispute of the facts should go to a jury, Gallion said. We've filed documents to back up what we've said all along and we'll see what the judge does. That's all we can do. I learned a long time ago never to speculate what a judge or jury might do, but we want to get it to a jury and that's what we'll argue (today). If he throws out the major counts and leaves in the lesser ones, we'll file a writ and just go on from there and then go to appeals court. This is a case a jury needs to hear. If they think they've heard the last of me, they're wrong. The saga has had several twists, including the involvement of Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer and former Birmingham recruiting analyst Tom Culpepper as sources for the NCAA. Culpepper recorded a portion of a meeting with Fulmer, who reportedly as far back as 1998 was urging the NCAA to investigate Alabama recruiting tactics. Also, after initially denying Means received any money from the $250,000 reportedly given to his high school coach by Alabama booster Logan Young of Memphis, the coach indicated two weeks ago before Young's sentencing that Means' family received $65,000. Young was convicted on federal bribery charges and sentenced to six months in prison. Means has denied receiving any money, but admitted in Young's trial to lying to a grand jury about another person taking his pre-college entrance examination. Gallion attempted last summer to depose Fulmer about his involvement, but the coach has refused to submit to the deposition. Gallion also has rattled sabers with NCAA officials, including NCAA president Myles Brand, who last year filed a formal complaint with the Alabama Bar Association. That complaint alleged Gallion violated the association's Rules of Professional Conduct by discussing the case at length in the media. The complaint was dismissed in April. Gallion said when the Cottrell-Williams suit is over, he plans to take action against Brand. Today's hearing, Gallion said, will give attorneys roughly an hour each to argue their case. We'll have to hustle to get ours in, he said. To me it's too big of a case to shortcut it. This is a case I took because I believe my clients are right. I know what Culpepper did and I know what Fulmer did, and the public has a right to know what happened and what is going on. A second hearing is scheduled on Friday for other issues related to the case. © 2005 The Huntsville Times © 2005 al.com All Rights Reserved. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

Former Alabama booster Young gets 6 months in prison 6/13/2005, 7:39 p.m. ET By WOODY BAIRD The Associated Press MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) A former Alabama football booster convicted of bribing a high school coach to get a top recruit for the Crimson Tide was sentenced Monday to six months in prison. Logan Young, 64, also was sentenced to six months home confinement after his release from prison and then two years' supervised release. U.S. District Court Judge Daniel Breen allowed Young to remain free pending appeal. Prosecutors asked for a sentence of two years to 30 months in prison. Young sought probation, house arrest and public service. Young already has been ordered to pay $96,100 in restitution for structuring bank withdrawals to hide a crime. Young said he was not upset that his chief accuser, former high school coach Lynn Lang, avoided jail time after pleading guilty to taking part in a racketeering conspiracy. I don't have a problem with that, Young said as he left the federal courthouse. I'm happy with what I got. Young said he was right to go to trial and believes his lawyers have a good chance of overturning his conviction at the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Lang testified against Young, saying he paid $150,000 to get defensive lineman Albert Means to sign with Alabama five years ago. Defense lawyers contend Young committed no crime as defined by the law. He was convicted under federal law of money laundering and racketeering conspiracy. The underlying offense, however, was a violation of state law, bribing a public servant. Defense lawyers argued that Lang's job as a high school coach did not include advising athletes on which colleges to attend, so Young could not have bribed him to violate his official duties. Lawyer James Neal said that argument will be at the heart of Young's appeal. Breen said Young's trial exposed part of the underbelly of college sports and he hoped the prison sentence will keep other wealthy college boosters from using their money to control the lives of student athletes. Young's lawyers said he needs a kidney transplant and could not get proper medical care in prison. Before sentencing, Young asked the judge, I beg you to let me ... continue to get my transplant, hopefully within the next six months. Assistant U.S. Attorney Fred Godwin argued that Young could get competent medical care in prison. In deciding on a lighter punishment than the government sought, Breen refused to classify Means as a vulnerable victim under sentencing guidelines. The sentencing hearing began Thursday but was delayed after defense arguments focused on an interview in The Commercial Appeal newspaper of Memphis in which Lang claimed the Means family got $60,000 of the payoff money. Defense attorney Robert Hutton argued that Means wasn't hurt by the conspiracy to send him to Alabama. Means said at Young's trial that Lang arranged for another student to take the college entrance exam for him. As a result of this conspiracy, he was able to attend college, Hutton said. Godwin argued that even if his family got money, Means still was an impressionable teenager from a poor family who was victimized by adults. The NCAA has said it believed Means was unaware his football talents were being brokered. Means refuses to talk about Lang's allegations. Lang testified at Young's trial that other universities, including Georgia, Kentucky, Arkansas, Memphis, Mississippi, Michigan State and Tennessee, offered him money or jobs to get Means. No charges were filed against anyone with those schools. Three former coaches, Rip Scherer of Memphis, Jim Donnan of Georgia and Ivy Williams, an Alabama assistant, testified Lang was lying. Means' recruitment became part of an NCAA investigation that led to sanctions against Alabama in 2002, costing the Crimson Tide scholarships and bowl appearances. Lang, the former head coach at Trezevant High in Memphis, lost his job because of the recruiting scandal and now lives in Michigan. He testified against Young while waiting to be sentenced on a guilty plea to crossing state lines as part of a racketeering conspiracy. Prosecutors supported Lang's request to avoid prison and he was sentenced to two years probation and 500 hours of community service. Means transferred to Memphis after one season at Alabama and finished his college eligibility last season. Copyright 2005 Associated Press. All rights reserved. [RollTideFan] Former Tide football coach loses appeal to high court over pay
Former Tide football coach loses appeal to high court over pay 5/27/2005, 4:44 p.m. ET The Associated Press MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) Former Alabama defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson, who claims he has not been paid money the university owed him when he was fired in December 2000, lost his appeal Friday to the state Supreme Court. Johnson, now the defensive coordinator at Mississippi State, still had a year and a a half remaining on his contract when he was dismissed along with head coach Mike DuBose and the rest of the staff at the end of the 2000 season. But the court ruled that university officials did not commit fraud by not telling Johnson that the university would be immune from lawsuit if they failed to pay him. An attorney for Johnson said the ruling means any contract with any state institution in Alabama is unenforceable. Johnson sued the university, along with then-President Andrew Sorensen and then-Athletic Director Bob Bockrath, accusing them of failing to abide by the contract. The contract said Johnson would continue to get his paycheck until he found comparable employment. Johnson stopped receiving checks from the university later in December 2000, when he accepted the head coaching job at his alma mater, The Citadel, a Division I-AA school. Johnson argued in his lawsuit that The Citadel is not comparable employment to Alabama, one of the most recognized names in college football. Johnson's salary at Alabama was reportedly about $122,000 a year in 2000. A Tuscaloosa judge dismissed the lawsuit, saying the University of Alabama was immune from liability and that the athletic director and president could also not be found liable because they were acting as agents of the university. Johnson appealed the lower court rulings concerning Sorensen and Bockrath, claiming that they committed fraud by leading him to believe he could go to court if the university failed to honor the contract. The Supreme Court, however, ruled Friday that Sorensen and Bockrath were not legal scholars and would have had no way of knowing what they told Johnson was false. One of Johnson's attorneys, Thomas Powell of Birmingham, said the university's immunity means that employment contracts with Alabama are unenforceable. It's important to know that any contract with any state institution is unenforceable. You need to get your money up front. That applies to every football coach, every professor, Powell said. Powell said Johnson still has a claim against the university pending before the state Board of Adjustment. Johnson did not return a phone message left at his office at Mississippi State. An attorney for Bockrath and Sorensen, George Gordon, also did not return a message left at his office. Copyright 2005 Associated Press. All rights reserved. [RollTideFan] CECIL HURT: Big Ten does little wrong in eyes of NCAA
http://tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050522/NEWS/505220386/1011 CECIL HURT: Big Ten does little wrong in eyes of NCAA May 22, 2005 It seems that I might owe the NCAA Enforcement Staff an apology./sDuring the Logan Young trial in Memphis, I wrote that members of the Enforcement Staff were probably monitoring the case -- unless they were too busy whitewashing the pending Ohio State case. Well, it turns out that I was right about what they were doing, not that predicting a whitewash took any great insight. But where I transgressed was in underestimating their speed and efficiency. After all, I wrote that in late January -- and the NCAAs enforcement guys had already wrapped up their investigation into Maurice Clarett in time to beat the Christmas rush. Ohio State, earlier this week, released its official letter of inquiry from the NCAA, and that letter included no mention of Clarett, the star running back on Ohio States 2002 national champions and, most recently, a young man who accused the Buckeyes of a long list of NCAA infractions. Instead, the letter focused almost entirely on potential basketball violations, mentioning football only once. To be honest, that was so predictable that I originally didnt even intend to write about it. No investigation into Big Ten football ever amounts to anything. The last Big Ten football team to receive a postseason ban in football was Minnesota in 1991. Ive probably got 25 years or so of college football observation left, and Im likelier to see Vanderbilt win a national championship than I am to see a Big Ten team get a bowl ban. Just for the record, in the 15 years since it last happened, the SEC has seen Alabama (twice), Auburn, Kentucky, Ole Miss and Mississippi State receive penalties. Its reached a point, though, where most college football fans just shrug about that inequity. It doesnt make any difference to Alabama, which has served out the penalties in its most recent probation. Its just the way things are. Of course, Big Ten fans will argue that there have not been any penalties because their programs are all pristine. The proof? Well, if the NCAA hasnt imposed any penalties, they must be clean -- or so the tautology goes. I dont know about that. I do know that a Michigan booster was paying $600,000 to players in basketball, which isnt the main sport at Michigan. (The NCAA Enforcement Staffs original finding in that case, by the way, was that there were only secondary violations.) I do know that Albert Means recruitment was a cesspool and the team that traveled the greatest distance to jump in and swim around was Michigan State. I do know that Clarett was driving a quick succession of nice vehicles while he was playing at Ohio State. So color me skeptical about the pristine thing. Nonetheless, the case wasnt likely to be column material. That was until someone at the NCAA decided to comment. Now, an NCAA comment isnt all that valuable in and of itself. In the first place, its probably no better than 50-50 on whether any given NCAA official is telling the truth or not. On the other hand, when someone at the NCAA does deign to comment about a pending case, it is revealing. First, the comment is usually means that the NCAA has been stung by some particular criticism. Second, the comment usually reveals more about the NCAA agenda than the spokesperson intended to reveal. Thats what you can tell from the words of David Price, the NCAA vice president for enforcement services, earlier this week. Price indicated that the NCAA had tried for nearly a month to call Clarett, and he never called them back. Over the course of a month in November and December 2004, phone calls were placed to Mr. Claretts reported cell phone numbers, relatives, former legal representatives and friends, Prices statement said. But the messages left were never returned. In addition, attempts to contact him in person failed. No kidding, Mr. Price? Your crack staff devoted a whole month to finding Clarett, then gave up because he didnt return a phone call? Thats a little different than the years spent pursuing some of the individuals in the Alabama case. Some of those individuals werent too co-operative, either, like Lynn Lang, who never said a word to the NCAA until after Alabamas penalties were handed down. In that case, the lack of an interview was no deterrent. The NCAA just used confidential sources. One thing is obvious, and thats why the Broncos drafted Maurice Clarett as highly as they did. Not only does he seem to be super-strong, since he apparently fashioned the SUVs he drove in college with his bare hands, but he is also able to become invisible at will. Considering that he was a constant television presence in the build-up to the NFL draft, reporters and others seemed able to find him pretty easily. It wasnt so easy for an NCAA investigator, though, and the best course for them was just

[RollTideFan] Committee denies UA nominee McDonald
http://www.decaturdaily.com/decaturdaily/news/050518/ua.shtml Committee denies UA nominee McDonald By M.J. Ellington DAILY Staff Writer [EMAIL PROTECTED] · (334) 262-1104 MONTGOMERY A Senate committee denied Decatur native Sid McDonald's re-nomination to the board of trustees of The University of Alabama late Monday. But McDonald will remain a trustee, an area lawmaker said, because the full Senate didn't vote. Tuesday, political observers said the Senate Committee on Confirmation's action had little to do with McDonald and everything to do with Mobile businessman Riley Boykin Smith, who lobbied for a trustee post. Area legislators who question the way the Senate committee made its decision believe a court may have to determine if committee action was legal. The Senate approves all nominees to the UA trustee board, which is a self-perpetuating board. The trustees nominate people to serve on the board when vacancies arise. McDonald chaired the board's nominating committee when it selected three new members and re-nominated four current trustees Feb. 4. The trustees nominated Marietta Murray Urquhart of Mobile for the vacant seat in District 1, where Smith lives. Smith is the grandson of former U.S. Rep. Frank Boykin, who played football with Paul W. Bear Bryant at Alabama, and has deep roots in Alabama politics. Smith served as state commissioner of conservation and natural resources in Gov. Don Siegelman's administration. His brother-in-law, Wallace Malone, a vice president of Wachovia Bank, formerly headed SouthTrust Bank. Rumors about the nominations and Smith's interest circulated through the State House when the session convened in February. After the UA board nominates trustees, the nominations go to the Senate Committee on Confirmations, which votes on the nominees and reports nominations to the full Senate. The committee can substitute its own nominees for the trustee board's slate. That last happened in 1983. The confirmations committee never officially met this week, according to Senate records. Instead, committee Chairman E.B. McClain, D-Midfield, individually polled some committee members. McClain's committee never reported this out, said Sen. Tommy Ed Roberts, D-Hartselle. There were several other confirmations reported out, but the full Senate never considered these nominations. Roberts believes the committee by itself cannot confirm or reject nominees. They need full Senate vote. Roberts also believes the university may have to restart the process and resubmit the nominations. I believe that where we are headed with this, it may take a court case to resolve the constitutional question, Roberts said. Sen. Tom Butler, D-Madison, said he was disappointed by the committee's action and does not think the action was legal. Sid will stay on the board because the Senate did not act on the recommendation, Butler said. Senate rules require that Senate committees have meetings, but the definition of meeting is in the eyes of the committee chair, said Butler. Roberts and Butler said they don't know who is backing Smith. I am not part of this, Sen. Roger Bedford, D-Russellville, said Tuesday. In February, reports surfaced that Bedford was interested in McDonald's seat, but Bedford denied those reports. John J. McMahon Jr., president pro tem of The University of Alabama System trustees board, and Dr. Malcolm Portera, system chancellor, issued a statement on the committee vote. The statement said McClain reported that the committee rejected the two nominees. The Board of Trustees has great respect for the Senate and the integrity of its procedures, the statement said. We continue to believe that the majority of the Confirmations Committee did not support the purported effort to reject these trustees without a public meeting. It is noteworthy that there are 13 voting members of the Confirmations Committee and that only six were reported as voting in favor of rejection. In addition to Urquhart, new trustee members who await Senate confirmation include Karen Brooks of Tuscaloosa and Joe Ritch of Huntsville. [RollTideFan] Alabama legend Bennett to be inducted into College Football Hall of Fame
http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050518/NEWS/50518005/1011 Alabama legend Bennett to be inducted into College Football Hall of Fame By Ralph D. Russo The Associated Press May 18, 2005 NEW YORK | Cornelius Bennett found out about his election into the College Football Hall of Fame about a month ago, and was asked to keep it to himself until it was formally announced. He couldnt keep the good news totally secret. I had to call and tell Momma and I had to tell my wife, the former Alabama linebacker said at a news conference Wednesday. If I didnt tell them I wouldnt be here today. Bennett, Heisman Trophy winner John Huarte and Southern California tailback Anthony Davis are among the 11 players and two coaches that make up the 2005 Hall of Fame class. They will be inducted in December at an awards banquet in New York and enshrined at the hall in South Bend, Ind., next year. Also entering the Hall of Fame are Pittsburgh offensive lineman Mark May, Michigan defensive back Tom Curtis, Penn State offensive tackle Keith Dorney, Ohio State end Jim Houston, Texas fullback Roosevelt Leaks, Oklahoma running back Joe Washington, Stanford defensive lineman Paul Wiggin and Illinois wide receiver David Williams. Don Nehlen, the winningest coach in West Virginia history, and Pat Dye, who won four Southeastern Conference titles in 12 seasons at Auburn, round out the latest class. Bennett finished seventh in the Heisman balloting as a senior in 1986 and won the Lombardi Award as the nations top lineman or linebacker. Its a great honor, something that were really going to cherish, said Bennett, who played in four Super Bowls with the Buffalo Bills. I can bring my kids to South Bend and show them that Daddy was an all right football player. Huarte won the Heisman for Notre Dame in 1964, quarterbacking the Fighting Irish to a share of the national title. Davis finished second in the Heisman voting as a senior in 1974, but his signature game came in 1972 when he scored six touchdowns against Notre Dame. May is the fourth member of the 1980 Pittsburgh team to make the college Hall of Fame, along with Dan Marino, Hugh Green and Jimbo Covert. Like Bennett, May had a long, successful pro career as part of one of the most famous offensive lines in NFL history the Washington Redskins Hogs. The NFL Hall of Fame would be great, but for me this is it, May said. Nehlen was the 17th coach in Division I-A history to win 200 games and finished his career 202-128-8. During 21 seasons in Morgantown, W. Va., he won 149 games and turned the program into one that could compete with the best in the nation. Still, induction into the Hall of Fame humbled him. I was looking for my wifes name as a voter, Nehlen said. I figured she must have voted about 1,000 times. Dyes head coaching career started at East Carolina and he spent a year at Wyoming before coming to Auburn in 1981. He won three straight SEC titles from 1987-89, and nearly lured Bennett away from rival Alabama. I committed to Auburn for a couple of weeks until coach (Bear) Bryant came to my house and I kind of changed my mind, Bennett said. Coach Dye and I always have a laugh about that. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

[RollTideFan] Newsome plans on homecoming
Newsome plans on homecoming Ex-football star hopes to leave Ravens' front office one day to return to Alabama Saturday, May 14, 2005 By TOMMY HICKS Sports Reporter POINT CLEAR -- It's safe to say Ozzie Newsome still has his Wizard of Oz abilities, even though his playing days ended in 1990. The former Alabama All-America tight end, who defined the position in his 13 seasons (1978-90) with the NFL's Cleveland Browns, has proven to be just as valuable off the field. He's currently general manager and executive vice president of the Baltimore Ravens, a team he helped lead to a Super Bowl title in 2000. There is a strong contingent of Alabama supporters who would like to see the Muscle Shoals native return to the Capstone and apply his experience and success to the Crimson Tide program, and Newsome admits that is something he would enjoy doing -- eventually. At some point I'm definitely coming back home, Newsome said during a break in play Friday at the McDonald's-Cornelius Bennett Celebrity Golf Classic at Lakewood Golf Club's Dogwood course. My son is in the eighth grade and I'd like for him to finish high school where he's at now. As for any job offers from officials at Alabama, or others connected with the school, Newsome said there have been feelers but nothing more. It's good to be wanted, he said, but with the experience I have gained playing the game and working on the administrative side, I think I could be an asset. But there hasn't been any pressure placed on me. I think people respect me and the job I have and what I'm doing. And that's nice. Aside from his record-setting playing career -- he retired as the NFL's all-time leading receiver at tight end and ranked fourth among all receivers -- he has established himself as a respected and successful front-office man. He was the first black to be named a general manager in the NFL, and his success has opened doors for others. I had a good high school coach, I played four years for coach (Paul) Bryant and I played and worked for an owner like Art Modell, so I've been surrounded by people with a passion for the game and men who were just good people, Newsome said. I have learned something from all of them. He took those lessons and developed his own style and approach to his jobs. What (his success) has done is I have blazed a trail for ex-players to remain in the game and let people know we can do a great job, Newsome said. Now, ex-players are coming back into the game and that's great to see. When you are a player and you have accomplished some things, that stays with you. That success helps you. It is a design that has worked for Newsome, who has been named to five halls of fames -- National Football Foundation, NCAA, Pro Football, state of Alabama and Senior Bowl. The success he has enjoyed doesn't give Newsome cause to enjoy those moments as much as it re-charges his efforts to gain more success. It only drives you more, he said. I'm very envious of New England right now, which has won three of the last four Super Bowls. That's what you work for. That's what all your efforts are aimed toward. It's something special to be the last man standing. It's also special, he said, to see your alma mater on top. Newsome said he has been pleased with the progress the Alabama football team has made recently and expects good things ahead. The one thing in our game we can't control is injuries and without the injuries of last season I think they would have won two or three more games, Newsome said. But to have won as many games as they did and make it back to a bowl game, that was a good job of coaching. The program is definitely headed in the right direction. ... I don't know who (head coach Mike Shula) could have called to get advice on the situation he took over. I don't know if there's ever been a situation like that before. He's done a good job. But the next steps are important. Obviously, you have to beat Tennessee, Auburn and LSU. That's the standard the University of Alabama has and we have to beat those (teams). The McDonald's-Cornelius Bennett Celebrity Golf Classic continues today at Lakewood Golf Course. The event begins with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start. There is no admission charge and fans are invited to take photographs and seek autographs from the celebrities taking part in the tournament. © 2005 The Mobile Register © 2005 al.com All Rights Reserved. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

[RollTideFan] DuBose diagnoses Tide's ills
DuBose diagnoses Tide's ills Saturday, May 07, 2005 To some, listening to Mike DuBose's advice on the current state of Alabama football would be akin to asking Bill Clinton for marriage counseling or Michael Jackson on picking out a family babysitter. Many blame DuBose for the current malaise in the Alabama program and, perhaps, there is some rationalization. However, in a recent conversation with DuBose, who is leaving Luverne High School after two very successful years to become defensive coordinator at Millsaps College, a Divi sion III program in Jackson, Miss., the coach fired some sobering warning shots across the bow about the real culprits concerned with the fall of the Alabama program. The 1999 SEC Coach of the Year, who was fired at Alabama in 2000 after a 3-8 mark, also wanted to clear up some confusion about his own past. As far as coaching is concerned, and doing the things I'm supposed to do as far as following the rules and regulations as a football coach, I've never broken a rule or never asked anyone to break a rule, said DuBose, who nearly lost his job at Alabama in 1999 after it was revealed he had an improper relationship with a university secretary. DuBose has repeatedly apologized for that transgression and has spent years speaking in churches and youth groups -- often with his wife, Polly, at his side -- admitting his mistakes and accepting full responsibility. As for Alabama, where DuBose starred as a defensive lineman and served as an assistant coach on the 1992 national championship team before becoming head coach, DuBose lit into the culture around the program, indicating it might be difficult for anyone to win until changes are made. DuBose said he was deeply concerned -- not about current coach Mike Shula, for whom he had praise in spite of a two-year record of 10-15, but about the environment surrounding the program. I feel like there are too many people trying to run that program, he said. There was a point in time when one man was in charge and everybody knew where the buck stopped. Now, there are 10 or 15 people trying to run that program and it won't work. Until somebody is in charge there and everybody who works there as far as the athletic department is concerned knows where the bucks stops, the program can't be what it can and should be. DuBose also said he believes his immensely popular predecessor, Gene Stallings -- who averaged 10 wins a season during a seven-year run, including a national championship and four SEC title game appearances -- was pushed out before he was ready to go. While it has been widely speculated Stallings was forced out by then president Andrew Sorensen and athletics director Bob Bockrath, the tall Texan has always been tightlipped on the subject, perhaps in part because he received a huge settlement from the school upon retirement. This is an opinion, not something coach Stallings ever said to me, DuBose said. There was a group of people who maybe thought he was about to become too strong, too influential and maybe didn't want to see it happen again. I don't really think Coach was ready to retire. I think he still had a lot of coaching left in him. DuBose declined to name the specific people but indicated they are still around and adversely affecting the program: I feel like there are people who are trying to influence the program who have their own agendas rather than what's best for the athletic program and especially the football program. DuBose said he believes things are so bad that even the greatest coach in school history would be handcuffed. If coach Bryant were still alive today, and was coaching and the same people that were there making the decision now were making the decisions in the early '70s, coach Bryant wouldn't have had the decade of the '70s, DuBose said. During that dazzling decade, Bryant's teams won eight SEC titles and three national crowns. I think there has to be a little more thought put into those key decisions, DuBose added. Those people making the decisions have to do what's best for the University of Alabama, not what's best for certain individuals. Laugh if you want. Scoff at DuBose for being bitter with an ax to grind. But in several conversations with DuBose in recent months, I really don't think that's the case. Sadly, DuBose has paid a terrific price and he now admits his chances of ever returning to the SEC -- even as an assistant coach -- are long gone. I have talked to most of the Southeastern Conference and most schools in the Southeast at some point in time, but for whatever the reasons, it just didn't work out, DuBose said. Polly and I have a peace. We've prayed about it. We have a peace that we've done everything we have to do or should do to get back. If it happens, fine. If it doesn't, that's fine, too. NBC will get the Sunday night package for $600 million over six years, sources told The Associated Press. The network will also get the Super Bowl in 2009 and 2012 as part of the deal, a source told the AP. The league's financial package with ESPN has not been confirmed. The moves leave ABC -- which originated Monday Night Football on Sept. 21, 1970 with the New York Jets visiting Cleveland -- as the only major network without NFL football. MNF has been a network institution ever since, and the second-longest running prime time network series, trailing 60 Minutes on CBS by two years. The highest-rated game was a 29.6, with a 46 share, for a 1985 game between the then-unbeaten Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins. Miami won, ending Chicago's hopes of a perfect season. ABC and ESPN are both subsidiaries of the Walt Disney Co. ESPN currently carries games every Sunday night and sometimes on Thursday. The NFL is still considering separate packages for Thursday and late-season Saturday nights. Beginning in 2006, ESPN's Emmy Award-winning Monday Night Countdown will air from game sites every Monday during the NFL season. Last month, Tagliabue said during the NFL meetings in Hawaii that the Monday night move was a strong possibility. CBS and Fox already have agreed to pay a total of $8 billion over six years for the Sunday AFC and NFC rights. NBC has been struggling in prime-time this season, and even risks an unprecedented fall into fourth place in the ratings. ABC's newfound ratings strength with Desperate Housewives on Sunday nights has been particularly damaging. NBC will devote its entire Sunday night prime-time lineup to the NFL. The Sunday night games will start at 8:15 p.m. ET and include flexible scheduling for the final seven weeks of the season, details of which will be developed by the league. That issue has become more pressing since parity caused by the salary cap has resulted in teams moving up and down the standings annually, leaving bad teams that were strong the previous season in prime time and good teams that were bad the past season off of it. A great deal with the NFL is the best deal you can get in television, said NBC sports chairman Dick Ebersol. He said the network hasn't started working on finding anchors for the Sunday night broadcast. We're celebrating for a day, Ebersol said. Then I'm sure we'll get a lot of calls. [RollTideFan] Keith McCants indicted in vehicle theft
Keith McCants indicted in vehicle theft 4/14/2005, 11:55 a.m. ET The Associated Press MOBILE, Ala. (AP) Former NFL linebacker Keith McCants was indicted on a charge that he stole a vehicle from a car dealership. He was indicted last Friday and the case will be assigned to a circuit court judge in the next month or so, the prosecutor's office said. He was arrested in December and accused of failing to return a 1998 sport utility vehicle that later was recovered. His lawyer said his client was allowed to drive the car from the lot. He kept it longer than he was supposed to, Richard R. Williams said. The car broke down at a particular location and he called them. Billy McGill, the dealership's general manager, said police were called when McCants didn't return the vehicle after two or three hours. The 36-year-old McCants starred at Alabama and was drafted by Tampa Bay with the fourth overall pick in 1990. He also played for Houston and Arizona and retired in 1995. Copyright 2005 al.com. [RollTideFan] Alabama's Britt trying to leap higher in draft
Article published Apr 10, 2005 Alabama's Britt trying to leap higher in draft By JOHN ZENOR AP Sports Writer Wesley Britt made a nice leap in NFL teams' eyes recently - 34 inches, to be exact. Aiming to show scouts he was recovered from a broken foot, the 6-foot-8, 315-pound former Alabama offensive tackle turned in an impressive 34-inch vertical leap last week in a campus workout. It's only a small step in Britt's road to the NFL Draft on April 23-24 after a Crimson Tide career notable both for achievements and injuries, but it gave him a confidence boost. There was a lot of talking once I exploded and got up like that, Britt said in a telephone interview. You could hear coaches and scouts chattering amongst each other. It kind of makes all the work feel worthwhile when you're recognized. Britt was recognized plenty of times for his exploits on the football field. He was a three-time AP All-Southeastern Conference pick and was a third-team All-American as a senior while winning the Jacob Award as the league's top blocker. Britt went through his share of adversity, too. He missed the final four games of his junior season after having surgery to repair a broken leg. He was invited to the prestigious Senior Bowl for NFL prospects, but broke his foot in practice on the Wednesday before the game. Britt said he didn't let it get him down. I did get to practice two of the days. There wasn't time to be frustrated, Britt said. It was just time to start rehabbing and get better. All I could think about was what I could control. It was time to focus on getting better, bigger, faster and stronger. He was unable to run at the NFL combine in February because of the injury, making the workout in front of scouts in campus more significant. I don't see how it wouldn't help his draft stock, Britt said. He's working out in Birmingham at Sports Medicine Fitness Institute and trying not to worry too much about when he'll be drafted. Britt is projected as high as a second-round pick in NFL mock drafts. I really don't know where I'll be drafted, Britt said. I feel confident wherever it is, is where I'm supposed to be and where God wants me. It'll be a place where I'm able to make an impact. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net
[RollTideFan] 'Ramp Lady' UA's Notorious Fan Exposed
This is a printer friendly version of an article from www.datelinealabama.com To print this article open the file menu and choose Print. Article published Apr 9, 2005 'Ramp Lady' UA's Notorious Fan Exposed Chad Hullett, staff reporter As I enter the University of Alabama's Coleman Coliseum, a queasy feeling enters my stomach. Normally this would be unusual, but this game is different. This time I am on a mission. This time I am here to find none other than Ramp Lady, UA basketball's official overzealous fan. My last encounter with Ramp Lady was highly unpleasant. In all of her exuberance, she committed a crime against humanity. She picked on someone weaker than her. During this second game between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers, I am sure that I will find Ramp Lady once again shouting and whooping it up for the home team. I arrive at the stadium early to find out more info about the infamous Ramp Lady. I walk around the student section, searching for someone who may have some information. For this, I enlist the help of the biggest basketball fans in the student body Mark's Madness. I dive into the sea of crimson T-shirts and signs armed only with my tape recorder and a few questions. After a bit of small talk, I find someone who is familiar with Ramp Lady and her escapades. Drew Shepherd, a senior at the University of Alabama, is highly familiar with Ramp Lady. She stands on the ramp (at the football games) and does nothing but yell for Alabama, Shepherd said. At the basketball games she gets anywhere she can stand. Alabama has had many an exuberant fan throughout the years. The two guys with the Roll Tide sticks -- really just boxes of Tide detergent with rolls of toilet paper on top -- resembling Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee come to mind. While fans like this are vital parts of the Alabama sporting experience, the actions of Ramp Lady at the last UA and Auburn game have caused me to doubt her place among genuine Bama fans. I think she is [a vital part], some would say otherwise, but I think she definitely is, Shepherd said. I continued scouring the student section, looking for more insight on Ramp Lady. She screams, said University student Patrick Walker. She's like a freakin' banshee. I haven't seen her at every basketball game, so she's pretty much a warm weather fan, Walker said. I'm sure she's a nice lady and all, but she's just nuts. Walker said he never really heard her go too far because he doesn't think she knows any proper English language. While the comments are made purely in jest, Walker paints a picture of a woman who spoils the fan experience with her brand of high-pitched cheering and belligerence. I don't think screaming makes you a big 'Bama fan, said UA basketball fan George Ruch. She really detracts from my experience here at Coleman Coliseum; she detracts from the entire fan experience. Rush has gone so far as to even join a group on the popular inter-college student database thefacebook.com calling for Ramp Lady to be banned from all sporting events. It's called 'Ban The Ramp Lady from All Bama Sporting Events,' he said. She has the right to come, but we should put her up in the rafters or something. With all of the negativity and negative opinions surrounding Ramp Lady, I decided to go to the fiery fanatic herself. I find Ramp Lady arguing with an usher, trying to get into the student section. My real name is Rena Hayes, I'm from Prattville, Ala., said the middle-aged Bama fan. She looks at me suspiciously as I ask her questions. I just recently got into basketball about two years ago, but I don't miss a football game, Hayes said. Everybody knows who the Ramp Lady is. Hayes said she got her nickname because she never sat in her assigned seat. Instead, she moved to the ramp to yell for the Tide. I have no idea where my seat is hell, I don't know where my seat is tonight, she said. With Ramp Lady attending so many Bama functions, most would think she's a Tuscaloosa resident, right? Wrong. I still stay in Prattville, I drive up here for anything, she said. I never went to the University, I just grew up bleedin', living and breathing Crimson Tide football, I then ask if she had any conflicts with other schools' fans. Half expecting to be in the direct line of a Ramp Lady tirade, I slowly ease away as her husband walks up. Much to my surprise, she replies calmly. I can, she said. At the Auburn game, I was just following the students I didn't start it come Monday morning, some lady picked me out and said I started the whole thing I was just following the students' lead. If they start tonight, I'll be doing the same thing. I was amazed at her final comments. Amazed but not surprised. I trudge my way back to my seat, thinking about her statement that the students were the root of Alabama fans' exuberance. I was not surprised at that. I was appalled. I sat back and thought of the times I
[RollTideFan] Decade of tribulation for Bama
Decade of tribulation for Bama Saturday, April 09, 2005 Ten years ago. It was a simpler time for Alabama football -- or it seemed. The Crimson Tide was back in its accustomed place, on a mind-blowing roll under Gene Stallings, having just compiled a four-year mark of 45-5-1 from 1991-94. Has anything really gone right in the Crimson Empire since? This thought occurred the other day upon coming across a headline from the spring of 1995, reading: What if the NCAA Slaps Tide? It was in reference to the NCAA's investigation into the Antonio Langham affair where Alabama initially had offered up four scholarships as a penance and haughtily assumed the NCAA would say fine. When the verdict came down on Aug. 2, 1995, the Tide was thunderstruck. The initial decree was three years probation, including 30 scholarships. The school eventually got the third year of the penalties reversed (nine scholarships were returned). The Tide would be ineligible for a bowl game in 1995 and would have to forfeit 11 games from the 1993 season -- turning a 9-3-1 season into 1-12. What was even worse was the shameful and painful peeling away of Alabama's once pristine reputation. Although the Tide did win the SEC in 1999 and go 10-3 in 2002, four times during this 10-year epoch Alabama has had either a losing or a non-winning season. In the previous 37 years, Alabama had suffered only one losing season. From 1995-2004, Alabama has lost nine of 10 to Tennessee. The Tide has lost six of 10 to Auburn and Arkansas, and gone 5-5 against LSU. The Tide has also lost twice to Louisiana Tech and South Carolina, as well as losses to Central Florida, Northern Illinois and Hawaii. The program has had five head coaches -- including one who never even made it to the first game. And one more thing that nobody thought conceivable in 1995 -- another eviscerating NCAA penalty, which came in February 2002. Using hindsight, it's always easy to say what could have been done differently. However, perhaps the biggest mistake was refusing to take a wide-ranging assessment of how Alabama got in trouble and in particular, the maddening culture that surrounded and permeated the program. One reason for this was that even after the 1995 penalty, Alabama officials couldn't seem to figure out what they had done wrong or accept it. Sound familiar? Perhaps there was some justification for the hubris. What got Alabama in trouble in the first place wasn't a big deal. Langham had signed with an agent. Had the school been proactive instead of pompous, they would have turned it in, and at worst, Langham would have had to sit out three games. However, the infrastructure at Alabama at the time was not conducive to criticism or accountability, and a minor problem quickly became a major disaster. The school's Board of Trustees, another group awash in arrogance, brought in a fresh face as president in Andrew Sorensen and he brought in an unknown as athletics director in Bob Bockrath. In the history of intercollegiate athletics, it's difficult to imagine two shoddier hires. It has been a series of disasters ever since. There is an easy answer and a difficult answer to what could have been done differently. The most difficult concerns serious change and a complete overhaul of the program, getting rid of decades-old dead wood and starting anew. In retrospect, that was halfheartedly attempted by bringing in two outsiders, which led to calamitous decisions like Mike DuBose being retained in 1999, as well as the ascension of loyal solider Mal Moore as athletics director. Meanwhile, nobody was really minding the store, which may have led to more NCAA problems and conflicts between coaches and compliance people and out-of-control boosters. This may have proved ruinous to Alabama in its NCAA defense, since some believe the Tide may have been done in by its own hired outside legal counsel, faculty rep and compliance people. This comedy of errors continued with the inability to lock down Dennis Franchione, the best Tide coach in years, to a contract instead of arrogantly (yep, there's that word again) believing that no Alabama coach would leave Tuscaloosa for College Station of all places. The bungling continued with the disaster of the Mike Price hiring and the dubious selection of Mike Shula to fill out this dance card. The easy answer to the aforementioned question is this was all inevitable. It was going to happen anyway. Perhaps the 25 spectacular years under Bear Bryant have been answered with 25 years of toil and turmoil. If that's true, and who's to say it isn't, the curse has only a few more years to run. Still, it's been only in the last 10 years that it seems everything that could go wrong has gone wrong. The only question now is simple: When will the bad tidings ever end? [RollTideFan] Bo Jackson denies steroids use
http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20050406content_id=1001917vkey=news_mlbfext=.jspc_id=mlb Bo Jackson denies steroids use 04/06/2005 7:37 PM ET By Scott Merkin / MLB.com CHICAGO -- Bo Jackson has never been one to back away from any sort of fight or battle. In fact, Jackson originally injured his left hip, a malady that cut short his tremendous football and baseball careers, by choosing to push for a few extra yards during a game instead of safely running out of bounds. Even years into his retirement, that desire to never back down certainly hasn't disappeared from the former White Sox designated hitter. So, when Jackson was working on the Internet a couple of weeks ago and saw an article posted on March 24 by the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin with a quote suggesting Jackson's hip replacement surgery in 2002 was caused by steroids abuse, he jumped to action. Jackson filed suit against the newspaper, its ownership group and Jim Mohr, the author of the article. At a press conference prior to Wednesday's White Sox game at U.S. Cellular Field, Jackson and his lawyers vehemently denied that he had ever used steroids during the course of his career. I wouldn't know what a steroid looked like if you put it in an enema and shoved it up my nose, a defiant Jackson said during the press conference. I'm a firm believer in using what the good Lord gave you, and if it's not enough, then so be it. If you can call Southern cooking, cornbread, collard greens, stew and fried chicken, if you call that steroids, I'm guilty. Anything else, I don't need it. The article in question focused on Ellen Coleman, a dietary expert, who spoke to a group of 30-or-so teenagers at The Sport Clinic in Riverside, Calif., in late March. Coleman has studied steroid abuse for more than 20 years and reportedly pointed to Bo Jackson as an example of a career destroyed because of the problem. Bo Jackson lost his hip because of anabolic abuse, Coleman was quoted as saying in the article, with the reporter claiming Jackson's case was one Coleman personally witnessed. When Dan Biederman, Jackson's lawyer, contacted Coleman, she was stunned by the comment. She denied ever using Jackson's name, through a sworn affidavit, and Jackson and his lawyers have a copy of the tape of her speech that backs up her statement. Biederman also contacted the reporter and the newspaper, with the express request of issuing a retraction. But Jackson and his group never received a response. Jackson was asked as to why he chose to go public with an article that seemingly has gone unnoticed in most parts of the country until Wednesday. For Jackson, it's much more a matter of principle than financial gain. I'm here to start the process of clearing my name, Jackson said. I don't think it needs clearing because I have nothing to hide. It hurts me and frustrates the [heck] out of me to have to explain to my kids, who are in high school and college, that the things you hear out there aren't true. I try to be a role model to my kids, to your kids, to anyone's kids who look up to any athlete or celebrity. I want them to look at me and know it's OK to say, 'Hey, I hope one day to be like that gentleman.' If you bring the fight to me, be prepared for a fight, Jackson added. Not to sit here and boast about things that are down the road, but I'm letting you know right now. I'm going to come out swinging. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

[RollTideFan] Deer Joe-L-Boo
http://www.al.com/news/birminghamnews/index.ssf?/base/news/1112091640324150.xml Alabamians sued over music Tuesday, March 29, 2005 VAL WALTON News staff writer An Alexander City hairstylist whose daughter downloaded hundreds of songs on the Internet is one of at least 24 people sued in federal court in Alabama by the Recording Industry Association of America. The suits, including two filed in Birmingham last week, are among 9,900 filed against individuals since 2003 on behalf of RIAA member companies such as Warner Bros. Records, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Arista Records and Capitol Records Inc. The lawsuits accuse people of using the Internet or an online media distribution system to download copyright recordings without paying, to distribute them to the public and to make them available for distribution. The suit against Vickey Goss of Alexander City, filed in Montgomery early this year, alleges that hundreds of songs by artists such as country crooner George Straight, gospel singer Kirk Franklin and hip-hop artist Nelly were downloaded on her computer. Goss was unaware of the downloads by her daughter, then 17, according to her attorney, Angela Hill. Her daughter didn't have any criminal intent, Hill said. Goss offered to settle for $400 or $500 but the offer was rejected, Hill said. For her, that's still a lot of money. U.S. copyright laws allow for damages of $750 to $30,000 for each song illegally downloaded on a person's computer. Hill questioned why the companies are not targeting the Internet file-sharing programs. The RIAA says the lawsuits are necessary to protect its members. The industry blames piracy for a 21 percent drop in CD shipments from 1999 to 2004. The U.S. Supreme Court will hear a case today in which movie and record companies contend they should be able to sue file-sharing services such as Groskster Ltd, and StreamCast Networks Inc., because their customers copy and trade copyright material online without paying for it. The case, the companies said, is considered a significant test of copyright law. Jenni Engebretsen, RIAA spokeswoman, said the suits against individuals are filed to combat the rampant copyright infringement through peer-to-peer use, which occurs when people illegally share music files across the Internet. The lawsuits are an important part of our overall effort to discourage illegal downloading and encourage music fans to turn to legal services, Engebretsen said. Individual users of illegal file-sharing networks should remain on notice: You can be caught, and there are consequences to your illegal actions. Engebresten said some defendants, once sued, have chosen to settle. Of the nine lawsuits filed in Montgomery-based federal court, three have settled. Engebretsen said two of nine people sued in the Mobile-based federal court have settled. In the Birmingham-based federal court, one person out of six has settled. But Atlanta lawyer John Israel, who represents Huntsville resident David Lackey, believes RIAA has sued the wrong David Lackey. He didn't do anything, Israel said. He's not that kind of person. Israel said Lackey, who writes his own music, is working to get his finances together to go back to school to obtain a graduate degree in music education. Being a composer himself, he is sensitive to the royalty issues, Israel said. [RollTideFan] How now brown Zow?
http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050316/NEWS/503160354/1011 Andrew Zow signs with Steeldogs By Tommy Deas Sports Writer March 16, 2005 Email this story. The University of Alabamas all-time leading passer, Andrew Zow, has signed with the Birmingham Steeldogs of the af2 indoor football league. Zow, who passed for 5,983 yards at Alabama from 1998-01, will compete for the starting job with the Steeldogs, coached by former Crimson Tide running back Bobby Humphrey. The native of Lake Butler, Fla., will be starting his second stint with the Steeldogs. He signed a one-week contract last summer to serve as the teams emergency quarterback, but did not play. Zow is the 10th former University of Alabama player to be assigned to the Steeldogs in the teams six-year history. Former Alabama and Tuscaloosa County High School defensive lineman David Daniel played in Birmingham last season and is still listed on the teams active roster. The Steeldogs will open their home schedule April 9 against San Diego at the BJCC Arena. All home games will be played on Saturday nights at 7. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

[RollTideFan] MARCH MADNESS Chicago Regional at Cleveland
http://www.al.com/alabamabasketball/birminghamnews/index.ssf?/base/sports/1110795392190180.xml MARCH MADNESS Chicago Regional at Cleveland Monday, March 14, 2005 STEVE IRVINE News staff writer TUSCALOOSA - The Alabama men's basketball team received its NCAA Tournament road map on Sunday. The road, which travels through the Chicago Regional, begins Thursday in Cleveland with a first-round matchup against Wisconsin-Milwaukee. After a handful of disappointing finishes this season and last season's Elite Eight run, Alabama fans may be expecting another successful run in this year's tournament. But Alabama head coach Mark Gottfried refuses to listen to that type of rhetoric. The first thing is, our fans or people around the country, I'm not going to let them define what success means to us, Gottfried said. That's not going to happen. Last year we had a remarkable run. This is a different year, different team, obviously a different matchup. The first matchup for the No. 5 seed Crimson Tide (24-7) comes Thursday at 11:25 a.m. against Horizon League champion and 12th-seed Wisconsin-Milwaukee (24-5) at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland. Win that game and the Tide will play the Boston College-Penn winner on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Two wins create a possible matchup with overall No. 1 seed Illinois (32-1). I think we've got a difficult road ahead of us, said Alabama junior Kennedy Winston. We've got one of the toughest brackets. Either way you look at it, it's going to be tough. Looking ahead in the bracket is not part of Alabama's plan. The Crimson Tide's first-round game Thursday is against a Wisconsin-Milwaukee team that won 17 of its last 18 games and was both the regular season and Horizon League Tournament champion. Panthers coach Bruce Pearl likes the pairing. We're going to be wearing that Cinderella slipper, said Pearl, a long-time coaching friend of Gottfried's. Alabama will certainly be the prohibitive favorite against us, but our kids are prepared and they know how to win basketball games. Gottfried compared Milwaukee-Wisconsin's pressing style of play to UAB's 40 minutes of pressure. They press the whole game, Gottfried said. You better lace your sneakers up real tight to play this game. They're going to come after you. Alabama just may handle the pressure if the Tide players take the calm approach they did on Selection Sunday. The players gathered at Gottfried's house in the afternoon and quietly watched the CBS selection show. Two years ago we watched the show here in the locker room, Gottfried said. They announced our name, and I went flying across the room in a full swan dive across the table. This year, our guys were pretty calm. They kind of just saw it, figured out who we're playing, went back to eat wings and were ready to go. One concern for Gottfried is getting senior guard Earnest Shelton back in the lineup. Shelton suffered a deep right thigh bruise and sprained right ankle in Saturday's SEC Tournament semifinal loss to Florida and came down with flu-like symptoms on Sunday. We got the double deal going here, said Gottfried, whose team is making its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. We've got to see how he does these next two days. He was going to come tonight. He didn't feel good so he went home to go to bed. We obviously need him healthy by the end of the week. Alabama will practice in Tuscaloosa today and Tuesday afternoon. The team will fly to Cleveland on Tuesday night and practice at the Wolstein Center on Wednesday. It's kind of a new start, Alabama junior Chuck Davis said. We've been going, playing a long season. Getting this opportunity, it kind of revives you. It's like a new beginning, like everything is fresh again.
