Re: [Samba] How to re-introduce a Samba server into a Win/NT domain?
What version of samba are you running? Jon Johnston Creative Business Solutions IBM, Lotus, Microsoft Consultants http://www.cbsol.com 952-544-1108 Blog: http://bingo.cbsol.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on 04/20/2004 06:53:49 PM: Hello. I'm hoping that you will provide some help with a Samba problem that I'm experiencing. We have an Alphaserver that has been functioning as the Samba-server in a Windows/NT Domain for about 5 years now. It was set up by an engineer here at Raytheon Missile Systems Company and he left the company about 2 years ago. I've inherited the administration of it. Last week the Alphaserver's unix (TRU-64 V 4.0F) boot-drive crashed and a replacement disk was built from a (5 day old) backup tape. Samba did not work after that and I'm quite sure - from the error-messages - that it's because the Alphaserver's NT-machine-account's password is out-of-sync with what the PC/winNT side remembers it to be last set to. I can not get Samba to run as it had been running all of these years - i.e.: with security = domain and password server = * specified in the smb.conf file. I can get Samba up and running with security = server and password server = PDC,BDC,Alphaserver. But the Samba-functionality ceases after a while, even though the Samba-daemons are still running. How can I remove the Alphaserver from the NT Domain and thereby delete its machine-account, so that I can then add it back into the Domain with a new machine account-name and associated machine-account-password? (I'd like to also go back to using security = domain in the smb.conf file.) I have read the html help files but nothing there referrences taking an existing Samba-server out of a Windows Domain and then adding it back in again in order to re-set the machine-accountname and its password. Any help light that you could shed on this issue would be greatly appreciated. [Samba] AD and home directory on Linux
I'm trying to get my home directory (automaticly) mounted from the AD server via SMB - I can't (don't want to) use NFS, because that fucks up the file modes (even with SFU it's not compatible enough). Using LibNSS/LDAP and LibPAM/{LDAP,Krb5} will authenticate me, get me a ticket and overall work exactly as planed. However, my home directory isn't availible (I had to create an empty directory, so that the nss/pam stuff will work - if the directory doesn't exists login is denied). Trying to use 'smbmount' fails if using 'krb' as auth method: - s n i p - [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ smbmount //majorskan/turbo /mnt/turbo -o krb Warning: kerberos support will only work for samba servers Anonymous login successful 12034: tree connect failed: ERRDOS - ERRnoaccess (Access denied.) [Samba] Passwords expiring on 2.2.8a
We have our 2.2.8a network functioning, well with the standard smbpasswd backend. Lately people have started getting messages about their password expiring. I haven't seen anyplace in this version that a person can enforce password aging. One person has changed their password and then it stopped, I believe that if I change their (samba) password on the server it stops as well. Password aging is not enabled on the UNIX accounts either. We really don't want people changing their samba password yet, as passwd sync isn't enabled for several reasons, not the least of which is that we do a lot of authenticating with LDAP and this is seperate. Once we get to Samba3 we may actually use this feature, but for now I can't do that upgrade and don't want people to change their password willy nilly. Has anyone seen this and found a way to get the machines to stop complaining about expiring passwords? -- Paul Gienger Office:701-281-1884 Applied Engineering Inc. Yes, but currently, we have a NT server, but not running as a PDC (unless someone didn't tell me something. :/ ). Best to lower the OS level anyway? Maybe 33? You need to have all your clients register with the WINS server for it to find names. The easiest way would be to add the WINS to you DHCP server, so all the clients will automatically find out about it. All the clients are pointing to the samba server as a WINS server, so that should be working ok. My guess is, I have some sort of conflict (possibly) between the samba wins server and the NT server. [Samba] help with smbmount and permissions
ok, on my windows machine, i see: myname on 'computer01\home' (H:) so i went to my linux box and did: smbclient -L //computer01 -U myname and i see Home listed as a sharename (why does windows show it as home but its really Home as reported by smbclient?). well everything works fine if i mount it like this: smbmount //computer01/Home /mnt/computer01/Home -o username=myname but i want to mount computer01/Home/myname directly...something like this: smbmount //computer01/Home/myname /home/myname -o username=myname but that fails saying the sharename does not exist...as observed by the smbclient command. but an even bigger problem is that if i mount it as root using the first (working) smbmount command, then exit root and cd into myname, i can read files, but i can't write. how can i remedy this? thank you for the help. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

RE: [Samba] help with smbmount and permissions
almost...fmask should be 0666 and dmask should be 0777 (i.e. they're backwards...=), but yeah, that fixed the problem, albeit in a not so clean way (i.e. everyone has these permissions). here's my naive take on the situation. the problem lies in that since root issues the smbmount command, the resulting mounted filesystem is owned by root. your fix changes the permissions of the files and dirs in the mounted filesystem, but the ownership stays with root. is there anyway to mount the filesystem as the user who is going to use it? or if not, mount the filesystem as root, but change ownership of the newly mounted filesystem to a different UID? thanks again for your help. -Original Message- From: Joe Cipale [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, April 21, 2004 2:31 PM To: Chris J.
