Well, if cost were no object but then it almost always is, isn't it?

I once had a Board member ask that we move from Linux to Windows. When I
tallied up the cost to replace old hardware that wouldn't support the
current version, and the cost of multiple copies of OS, Office, and
various other software, he was quite surprised at what the price totaled
-- about 40% of the organization's annual budget.

It was the last I heard of that request.

And given that I have finite mental space, it's really far more
practical for me to use the same OS at home as at the office.

It will be interesting to see what I do once I am shed of the
non-profit. I'm sure I'll be back here asking advice on *that* year's
products.

I cannot speak for the others, but in my case, I used to use Linux on
servers, desktops and laptops almost exclusively for 10 years.

I continue to use Linux on servers and desktops to this day. About 10 years
ago i moved to Mac on my laptop. I became sick and tired to patching
kernels to get them to support suspending the laptop, bluetooth crappiness,
wifi issues, etc on Linux on the laptop.

A Macbook, while apparently more expensive, is pretty solid in terms of
specs, construction and aesthetics. A PC of similar specs, construction and
aesthetics costs about the same as a Macbook. IME, macbooks last a solid 4
years or so.

OSX is quite good. Best of all, I have access to all my favorite command
line tools through Homebrew and the ports collection.

My main use case for the laptop is to edit and process photos. The tools
available to do this are the best in the world. By comparison, my options
for photo processing is very limited on Linux.

If I were a gamer, I'd probably go with Windows. If I did more coding day
to day, I'd go with Linux.

I found the light energy from large screen monitors left me tired and
weakened about ten years ago. I have been switching to smaller screens ever
since. These days it's more or less just my smart phone.

I perceived it was the right thing to do out of an intuitive sense.
However, a simple way to explain this is - any flickering light is
annoying, but TV screens flicker fast enough to fool the eye but not fast
enough to fool the subtler senses.

I suppose I was affected more because I'm highly sensitive to subtler
distractions.

Much of work - reading online, emails, writing, making and editing
documents, image editing, CAD viewing - on a 5+yo 13.3" MacBook Pro with a
RAM upgrade. A lot of my work uses paper - doodles, sketches, notes - with
pen and markers.

I do most purchases/ transactions on the Mac too. My iPhone 6s is mostly
for phone calls, cab bookings, UPI payments to milkman/ bakery (yes!),
reading emails on the move, some music, and tracking the odd run or cycle
ride.

As for play, I have iPad(s)2,3 and Mini. Mostly use the Mini for iBooks and
Kindle, and the browser for going down a wormhole opened by something I
read. I recently watched all the series of Game of Thrones (for the first
time) one episode a day, on a new Asus Windows 10 superfast notebook.

I'd like to move to "ONE" device. Perhaps a 6.4" phone with a pressure
sensitive stylus, and enough horsepower to edit videos. And a mode to
switch from work to play :).

Work: A Linux desktop. And my MacBook Pro. I like the UI beauty of the Mac
and the access to my favorite command line tools (cal is still my preferred
way of looking at the calendar)

Play: (the same) MacBook Pro for email, news, photos editing. A Kindle
touch for consuming eBooks. I am amazed at the longevity of these devices.
Amazon's best product, IMO. 5+ and still going strong. And my Pixel phone
(for podcasts, audio books, quickly looking things up on the move).

There is also a Mac Mini at home hooked up to my TV on which I watch the
occasional Netflix or time shifted TV shows.

Linux laptop - need the screen real estate and a physical keyboard.
Virtual keyboards haven't really worked out for me - especially since I
spend large amounts of time in an SSH session. Use an Android phone for
VOIP, random browsing and messaging when I'm away from the laptop. The
phone is mainly used as a WiFi tether when I'm outside of my regular

If I really can't use a laptop, then an old Android Tablet with a

I have a total of two devices - a work-issue ThinkPad L460 and a Google
Pixel phone. The latter is, by design, work-disabled, and I have, by
devious machinations, acquired admin privileges on the former. I don't

But I do a lot of non-work-related stuff at work. At home, the phone (apart

My phone - use it for emails as well as light document and spreadsheet
editing. I only use the laptop when I have to create presentations or work
on complex excel files but can make do with phone for about 70% of my work.

My MacBook! The new MacBook is simply amazing .. the most portable laptop
I’ve owned. I do have my iPad Pro and iPhone (yes, I have sold my soul to
them) but it’s still my laptop I spend most time on.

My phone. I write on it, make invoices on it (tiny invoice is a great app
for Android, btw!), and watch movies on it. I own a laptop solely because
my dad gave me his secondhand MacBook.

As in, what do you spend the most time doing serious work/play on? For any
definition of 'work' or 'play' that appeals to you?

For me, it is still an assembled desktop computer running Windows.
Notwithstanding the existence in the house of 3 laptops, sundry tablets,
and many, MANY phones.
