Ok, thanks. Last night (2017 May 1 22:20 EST) I gave up and directly
downloaded from SourceForge. I still have the old version (zipped)
and could go back to try the update again, but I won't do this unless
you need me to try the update again.

SourceForge has confirmed to me that some mirrors still aren’t secure. So
that’s the reason for your problem. They’re working on it. This also means that
if you try later it should work, as it would randomly try another mirror.

I think this is a problem with SourceForge. I get the impression that they
sometimes have problems with their score connection to downloads, perhaps
forwarding to insecure http addresses for some mirrors (as they did in the
past). Trying again later may “fix” this, as they may try a different mirror.

Ok, thanks, I'll try that if we don't figure it out.

I don’t know what’s going on. I had no problem on 10.12.4. So I guess it has to
do with a bug in 10.11. One possibility could be that 10.11 has a bug in app
transport security (i.e. preventing downloads with an insecure http address),
which is something that was added in 1.4.27 IIRC. Is there any log in the
Console related to this?

You may want to update from the website.

When Skim launches, I get this message:

A new version of Skim is available!
   You have 1.4.27.
   Version 1.4.29

When I click 'Install Update' a 'Downloading update ...' window appears
and then immediately on top of that is another:

   Update Error!

An error occurred while downloading the update.
   Please try again later.

The only option at that point is to 'Cancel Update'. This happened
repeatedly on a Mac OS X 10.11.6. However, on 10.10.5 and 10.6.8 I
had no trouble updating. I have a clear connection to the internet.

Any idea what's wrong or what to do? Previous updates went ok.

PS: To make it easy for people to report exact error messages, it
would be best to make ALL text of popups be cut/pasteable [if you
can].

Thank you VERY MUCH for so actively keeping Skim going!!

When Skim launches, I get this message:

A new version of Skim is available!
   You have 1.4.27.
   Version 1.4.29

(That's approximate because I don't want to type the whole thing. If
you want us to give exact messages then it would be best to make ALL
text of popups be cut/pasteable [if you can].)

When I click 'Install Update' a 'Downloading update ...' window appears
and then immediately on top of that is another:

   Update Error!

An error occurred while downloading the update.
   Please try again later.

The only option at that point is to 'Cancel Update'.
This happened repeatedly on a Mac OS X 10.11.6. However, on 10.10.5 and 10.6.8
