Subject: [RCSE] In Memory of RCSE

The time is now for the end of RCSE.

RCSE has been around forever in Internet years, since the 90's. I can't
even remember when it started. Some of the online stuff goes back to
around 1999, I know I have some stuff back to 1996 and that is
definitely not the oldest stuff.

Posts to the list have gone down, mostly stuff about events that are
happening out there. There hasn't been too much serious discussion in a
while and flame wars, well everyone has been civilized.

The equipment that the list is running on is aging and it's kind of hard
to get excited about a mailing list these days. RCSE has been around
forever in Internet years, since the early 90's. I can't even remember
when it started. The computer guys at Airage want to shut the server
down as soon as they can. It's not too cool to be running a Windows NT
server these days. There are probably other security reasons to shut it
down.

I don't have a shut down date for RCSE, but expect it to be soon.So
if you have any favorite memories, please post them to the list before
it goes away. Maybe you can mention your favorite technical guru's
discussion, flame war or Sal bashing. And sorry, RCSE won't cover the
infamous challenge by Lucas to Joe.

Thanks for the memories.

Great Roomies can be hard to find. Reminds me of the time I shared a hotel

particularly funny stories came out of that experience (except for that

result I later got to fly at a somewhat lesser known site with the world

[RCSE] Los Banos BASH write up.

2006-03-21 Thread Bill Swingle

On Friday the 17th, my buddy Steve told me I may just ride my motorcycle to
the BASH. I looked out side, saw it was snowing at my place in the
Sierras, as it had been all day, and told him he was nuts but wished him
luck regardless. Surely it had to be too cold even in the central valley.

Saturday I headed over Donner Pass and into centeral California. I found no
snow on the mountain roads and bright sun in the valley. Plus, it was WARM.
Wowie Zowie, winter is over! I tossed my winter apparel asside. Sunday
dawned clear but again kinda cold. We dealt with it. Most were cold. Only
BASHer Tim, a Fresno dude, stayed in shorts!

The wind started at 10mph up the left side of the north slope (my favorite).
Through out the day it built up to 20mph. But maintained a hint of
character. A very Good day!

We flew lots of stuff. Naturally, the Boomerang and the Mongo Jr. were the
best choices initially. But when the wind picked up a tad, the Boomer became
somewhat outgunned by the wind while the Mongo Jr. needed only two clicks of
down trim to domminate the sky. Plus the Jr.'s a great target. Another plane
that's great to fly with is the J3 Cub. It's a magnet for those combat
wings. They just bounce off so it's cool! Seeing those wheels sticking up
when it's inverted is sight! The ol' DAW TG-3 is also a perenial favorite.
We each have had one but BASHer Mike still has his and it still flies great!
Very cool. Friends I'm a staunch wing guy but having a conventional in the
furball really adds to the climate and the fun! If your slope has the wind
for it, get a conventional.

Additionally, we got to see some good glass too. BASHer Tim Cone who knows
how to fly glass. Showed off a new Aris (sp?). It was the finest
crastmanship I've ever seen. If you've got the cash... ;-)

BASHer Mike, a huge foam guy (Mongo's, Staggerwing, Cub, etc...) also had a
slick glasser called the Phonix (umlaut over the O). It was a slick racer
that he maden flighted. It flew very well. Punched up to staggering heights
and took some talent to land well on the slope (like Banos is hard) cause it
floated a LONG way on landing. Very impressive.

Also, present among our gagle of slope trash was AREND BORST! I was amazed
that he felt we were worthy of traveling from Canada. But found that he was
actually taking his family to Disneyland. He stopped by to check out Banos
and possibly our event (don't remember). But we were honored none the less.
He chatted with us for some time. While his family waited in their van. I
was impressed by their patience.

We were also honored to have a pilot from the Denver area! Mr. Bob Peterson
joined us. He happened to be in the silicon valley for work and came out for
the fun. We loaned him a plane and TX and he proved that a thermal dude
(winch weenie) CAN do combat, too! He needs practice on the trash talking
but flew great. A nice guy to fly with.

It had been a long time since most of us had done combat. And we were pretty
green in our skills. Lots of the flying was crazy yank/bank and unorganized.
But, as the day progressed we began to see more quasi formation alignment
and calculated hits being made. As a founding BASHer it was terrific to see
the BASH forming up again before my eyes. I occasionly started misting up at
the nostalgic sight but it was always qwuelled by BASHer Tim's trash talking
So Mrs. Swingle, will Mr. Swingle be joining us today? Ya gotta love Tim.
What ever the event, invite Tim. He's a catalyst for fun. Especially if you
bring some muffins or cookies...

We adjourned from the slope to the honorary BASH diner, Ryan's in Los
Banos. And ordered the official BASH finale; a chocolate milkshake. They
make great shakes at Ryan's.

BASHer Steve took some pictures so I ought to have those on the web soon.

[RCSE] Re: Redundancy for Scale

2006-03-06 Thread Bill Swingle

Oh boy. This is a can of worms we've discussed before.

My personal paraphrase of the topic is that dual batteries are not worth it.

If you typically maintain your batteries, you'll be gaining very little.
If you typically skimp on your battery maintenance, you'll be gaining very
little.

Plus, how will you install the redundant battery? Disagreements exist here
as well. If you add extra components, you add points of failure. Often these
points will be mission critical and your added redundancy will STILL be
adding single points where a failure will equal loss of the plane. So what
will you have gained?

In light of the above, I suggest: Use a new battery and new wires and
connectors. Test your battery regularly. REPLACE your battery regularly,
approximately once every two years. If it's a VERY expensive plane or if
you're a worrier do it every year.

Re: [RCSE] Re: Redundancy for Scale

2006-03-06 Thread Bill Swingle

Simon,

If you're saying that a new battery may possibly fail. It is of course
possible. But testing before installation does help that significantly.

Yes, replacing things regularly is worthy of concern but more because the
connectors can fail. But their typical life cycle is long enough that I
thought a one or two year cycle wasn't concerning. Just test before
installation.

I suggested it because the one item that is expected to degrade over time is
the battery and will eventually need replacement. I was only suggesting a
replacement before failure. The user picks the time he's comfortable with.

Daryl, mentioned switch failure but since it doesn't cycle during flight I
didn't consider it significant. All I've had fail did so on the ground while
I cycled them. Naturally, it's tough to disagree with Daryl given his
credentials. I don't do so lightly.

Re: [RCSE] Epoxied servo removal

2006-03-02 Thread Bill Swingle
The ideas claiming a reasonably easy removal are true. However a disclaimer
is needed.

A glue joint can be done well or poorly. Those advocating epoxy are actually
advocating particular methods that will achieve glue joints which are
marginal (for lack of a better word). Done right they work great and
remove easily. Done wrong and they are unremovable.

I suggest that we spend more effort on the methods being used to acheive
these perfectly marginal joints.

I have to report that I've failed. Failed to resist the temptation to buy

Quick impressions: It's cute as bugs ear! It's a biplane which always

constructed and quite fun. With twin motors, great durability, long run
times...

Only problem I can find is the motors have too much up thrust and the
plane pitches up too much under power. I guess that was intentional.

A bit of wisdom from Joe Galletti in 1998:

A quick way to improve slop between the servo output shaft and the bearing

How much reduction? This is more difficult to answer. Generally speaking

[RCSE] Receiver perfrormance

2006-01-16 Thread Bill Swingle

Let's look at the Rx experiences of the lots of folks. Before we draw any
conclusions.

I think it was Don(?) who cited having problems with Berg, JR and Sombra
Rx's. These are pretty well proven units. Lots of guys are using them
successfully. Yet, Don had problems with each. This is a RED FLAG to me.
Getting one bad Rx does happen but 3 (or more) from different manufacturers
is quite unlikely.

While it could be related to the Rx's, it's more probable that the problem
is due to something that's common to each installation. This would equate to
#1. Your TX, #2. A common installation technique or #3. The location where
you fly.

I doubt it could be #3 but that's easy to rule out. #2 is possible but
fairly easily checked. #1 seems fairly probable and is more difficult to
check. Personally, I'd get the TX checked out first.

[RCSE] Aerotowing

2006-01-11 Thread Bill Swingle
All this talk about aerotowing has me intrigued. I've never done it but it
seems to me that it'd be a most enjoyable way to launch.

What are the general rules of thumb regarding methods, setup and behavior?

Beats lugging a winch for sure. But I've found that the most enjoyable part
of flying is the interaction with other pilots. Hence my interest in the
towing.

This probably doesn't help Bill, but I can see the full circle now. Many
sailplane clubs were off shoots of power clubs and with aerotowing
becoming

popular I can see the migration back to the power clubs.

Aerotow is very similar to an ROG winch tow, but Aerotow for sure beats
lugging the winch.

Re: [RCSE] micro sloper....

2005-11-17 Thread Bill Swingle
Ah, the hunt for a light lift sloper. An ever present search for most
slopers.

You mentioned foam. Fine. It can be done. But it's difficult to do well.

The combat wing Boomerang is pretty good in light lift. If you build it as
light as you can. 14 ounces is a doable goal weight that will yield
reasonable light lift performance. Mine is 16oz. and does well enough at
that with few if any compromises.

The old TG-3 *could* also be built light enough to yield reasonable light
lift performance. The old highlander is also reasonably good.

The Mongo Jr. is also pretty good in light lift if built for that.

The Alula is rumored to be pretty good but I've never seen one.

The Red Herring is also pretty good.

But for real light lift performance you have to choose a non-foam plane. The
Climax or any of the high dollar HLG's are very good.

Whatever choice he makes, the construction will be critical to achieving the
performance he desires. A micro plane is harder to build well.

2005-11-16 Thread Bill Swingle
While the previouly mentioned dual battery+BEC+diode+ the kitchen sink
sounds quite functional; I'm thinking it's just too complex to be reliable.

In my experience having multiple parallel and redundant paths often produces
human mistakes due to the extra complexity and the excessive reliance on the
expectation of increased security. Meaning keep it simple or this bone
head will forget something critically important and wreck the airplane
anyway! The multiple, parallel paths will require their own maintenance and
up-keep. I'm already lacking in that deptartment so extra paths will just
mean more places to trip over my own feet.

Chuck,

You're quite correct. It's pretty scary. Especially, when the plane is
making those errie and ominous sounds! I think that's part of the attraction
for these nut cases. ;-)

It's really cool to see in person. Plus, it is darn scarry. Most every one
on the slope will start looking for a secure place to hide.

For some strange reason planes tend to hit me. Some times by accident, some
times intentionally. Ask, Tim Cone, Charlie MacMurry (he's the worst), Scoop
or any other BASHer. I've been hit by lots of foam, some fiberglass and some
wood. Personally I've found the handiest place, excluding steel and
concrete, is sitting about 10 feet away from the DS pilot.

We've almost all had to send electronics gear in for testing/repair but I'm

Bench time is very expensive. Do the common repair shops actually make that

How trust worthy is the result when a shop says something is fine?

Re: [RCSE] slope ship question

2005-09-26 Thread Bill Swingle
 One FUN design.

Good suggestion. Just keep it light. I'd expect a loading of 8 would be a
reasonable goal. Even less would be better if acheivable.

Most 60 slope racers fly very well at low wing loadings. Better than what
most would expect. Along with ballasted for big wind, too. Their wide range
of flyability makes them a wise choice.

OK, Here's a probably dumb idea...

Would it be possible to gently heat the outside of the wing skin? Such that

Don't know but may work. Then the glue could be removed piece by piece.

Other wise there's the dental floss sawing method. It's a pain but safe.
