BTDT, exactly the same problem. I'm 6'2.
I too used Paul's method, which seemed to me to place the seats as low
as they could go. In they end they were too high for me, and I found

would just go and replace it.
If the gauge itself were messed up, I would expect it to read low or not at all.

Nope, I don't have them in my car, so I can't offer any installation advice.
But, in resply to Richard Gosling's noting that the Miata seats offer better
lateral support, I can offer this observation - As Rob Getzinger noted that
being 5' 10 has a side benefit, maybe having a fat butt is

I finally got the car started! (Have been quity busy with work...) For those
interested: The fuel pump worked (checked that first). But there was no
spark, which I also checked directly from the coil. Since the coil had power
coming in, I assumed that was the faulty part, and bought a new

I just finished putting a set of Miata seats and have the same problem, I
did cut off the ends of the seat rails (by the pins) and drilled holes in
the floor to get them as low as possible, but ended up putting a 3/8' spacer
on the back bolts to get some more front back
I am considering having the head on my Spitfire milled down to give me a little
more compression. It is a stock 80 head so it is currently about 7.5 to 1. I
am thinking of taking it to about 9 to 1. Can anyone tell me how much I would
need to take off to get it to that compression?
If I do
For 9:1 compression on a 1500 motor, you want to replce the US spec
dished pistons with the UK spec flat-topped ones. You may still need to
mill the head a bit, but this will get you close to the stock UK 9:1
spec.

I bet that about 75% of all coils that are replaced are actually OK.

Roger,
I used +0.020 flat pitons and milled the head on my 79 Spitfire to
Does anyone have a late MKIII GT6 3.89 rear end ratio speedo they'd care to
