See NFPA 13 (2002) section 8.14.7, especially handbook commentary.
However, local building code may trump this and you will need to
check them. (Porte Cochere: french for coach door)

I've reread (several times) the proposed change to 7.3.2(5) and I think I
now understand the intent. But I'm still confused.
The proposed change to A.7.3.2 (also part of 14-53 Log#CP3) adds a sentence
that reads "Only one standpipe is necessary to serve the roof, it is not the

I can't address how the IBC looks at porte cocheres, but by definition

The problem we designers have is that neither 13R nor the IBC addresses the
spacing of sprinks protecting the decks/balconies. That leaves us with the
criteria located in NFPA 13. NFPA 13 says sidewall sprinks can be located
up to 14' on-center (light hazard) and upright/pendent sprinks can be

I was informed by the NFSA rep today that HB 2 a transportation bill has been
altered to stop residential sprinklers.
There is a public hearing on this Monday morning at 10:00 am. It has passed the
house and senate and is in a conference committee.
If it passes this committee it will go to the
Dave,
I know firsthand of the issue. I was a firefighter assigned to the Truck

For Technical Assis
I believe the focus on this requirement is that these exterior spaces
(decks, balconies, whatever you call thems) represent an appreciable risk to
the building due to human activity. There have been some losses of
mid-rise 13R properties that were spectacular to watch as an exterior fire

Thanks, John and thanks Thom.
So, NFPA 14 and the IBC use slightly different phrasing (stairway access vs
stair access). A ladder leading from the highest landing up to a roof hatch
might qualify as 'stairway access', but not as 'stair access'. I may need a
formal interpretation on this one.
What's the AFSA position on this issue, i.e. "Exterior Decks/Balconies 13R
Sprinklers" ?
Thanks
