From reading the latest reports, the fertilizer facility in West, TX that
exploded had 270 tons of ammonium nitrate on site. They had previously told
authorities that they had nothing hazardous. They were required to file with
DHS if they have more than 400 pounds on site and only exceeded that
As a former HPR inspector I ask a lot questions. I get everything I need to
determine the hazards in a facility. I get criticized for asking too many
questions but I need to know what the protection requirements for the
hazardous areas. I am not a contractor but I work for contractors architects

We have a brewery we are installing a sprinkler system in. What's your
opinions on an occupancy classification (No major flammable material.
Just beer fermenting in tanks)? In 13, ordinary group 1 calls out
beverage manufacturing and in ordinary group 2 calls out distilleries.
Engineer on the
Unfortunately,
As a Design/Build from a contractor's standpoint there is nothing there.
Contractor: You are building a 50'-0 high building. What are you putting
in there and how high
Owner/Developer: Nothing. We just plan on operating maybe an office and
storing some things that are in no way
Todd - your numbers aren't exactly right, but there are definitely going
to be some very compelling questions asked over the next few days and
weeks. The plant had 270 tons of ammonium nitrate; Federal law states
that you must make a declaration to Homeland Security if you keep over a
ton. The

Storage is the problem.
Finished bottled beer storage in cartons stacking?
Bags of grain storage and raw material for the process unless it is outside
storage bins.

Just to take some of the sinister connotation out of a facility storing 270
tons or ammonium nitrate (fertilizer), that is only enough to do a single
springtime application to about 900 acres of hay fields. Based on the amount of
farming in the midsection of the U S, I'm betting there are many,
Flammable and alcohol does burn. We have a couple distilleries and the
vodka/whiskey has had periodic fires from the alcohol. So group 2 would
work for me.

If the engineer of record request OH Group II, why the discussion? The
liability is on the engineer.

There are a couple of things to consider.
Many breweries use flavorings, most of which are stored as
Combustible/Flammable Liquids in plastic totes. Some also store proprietary
wood chips for a specific flavoring process. Raw packaging materials, such
as cardboard for the six pack sleeves, and
Beverage manufacturing NFPA #13 (2010 Edition) A.5.3.1 - Ordinary Hazard
Group I
Distilleries A.5.3.2 - Ordinary
Hazard Group II
Table A.5.6.3 tells you what the commodity classification is for Alcoholic
Beverages up to 20 percent
The other thing is
Breweries and distilleries are different in that the alcohol content of beer is
significantly less than distilled spirits. That being said, I did a brewery
last year and did it as OH2. There was a lot of uncertainty about what was
going where (storage excluded). OH2 is a safe bet and I wouldn't
Agree Todd. That's what we are going with. Thanks for all the input!

It's not the amount but the seeming conspiracy or just plain negligent
behavior in not doing what is required when quantities reach certain
levels. One of my favorite examples would be storage of explosives. A very
nice chart about how far away from anything depending upon how much is
being stored
I'm not suggesting that they had sinister intentions, but I'll betcha a
dollar to a dime that we're gonna find out there were all manner of
violations and corners cut in their safety program. They were fined
$10,000 last summer for safety violations by the U.S. Pipeline and
Hazardous Materials
As I put on my tin foil hat,
Isn't a fire a great way to cover up the theft of a large amount of
Ammonium Nitrate?
