Actually, I have just realized that I indeed cannot use BEGIN IMMEDIATE to
do the locking because it has to be locked from the process that has no
SQLite in it...

The delete performance was measured incorrectly, so I re-examed the
performance. It still shows outstanding performance compared to insert
performance, but it is a reasonable gap.
