I have finally managed to successfully build and test the Net-SSLeay
1.88 module with OpenSSL 1.1.1h and zlib support.

The scanner.log seems to be empty. Please try to get a full file after a
failed attempt.
Most likely there's a corrupted file in your collection or something.

Trying to narrow down the problem. Some ALAC tracks play fine, others
will not play at all. For the tracks that won't play I see this in
server.log:
/Library/PreferencePanes/Squeezebox.prefPane/Contents/server/Bin/darwin-x86_64/sox
FAIL sox: `-' error writing output file: Broken pipe

If you use the material skin rather than the default web ui, there is a
very useful podcast search feature included, that's how I do it.

+1, this is how I do it as well.
One tip though, At times I have not found a podcast with a complete
search term, then abbreviated it,
