SQUID [08/08] Sight and Sound Series: Performative Cinema
The Squid List -- Sight and Sound Series: Performative Cinema Friday, August 8th 8pm $7-10 sliding scale, no one turned away for lack of funds Event Description --- Tonights show features three ensembles that engage in live cinematic manipulation and sonic experimentation: Wet Gate, the Overdub Club, and the trio of Maximillian (film), Jason Stamberger (electronics) and Liz Albee (trumpet). Wet Gate performs pieces for multiple 16mm sound projectors as a band, the machines and films as musical instruments: collaging projected images and optical audio tracks from film loops and fragments, using electronic effects to sample and delay the films' sounds, slowly ripping the stitching out from between the soundtrack and image coupled in the film material. By rearranging the officially coupled audio and image, Wet Gate re-positions them in an effort to examine both image and sound separately and together. http://www.wetgate.net The Overdub Club features 16mm multi-projector live improvisations by SF filmmakers Thad Povey and Alfonso Alvarez with live music by Mark De Gli Antoni and Lucio Menegon. The visuals come from a wide range of sources including newsreels, industrial films and cult feature films, and have been hand-manipulated by contact printing, ray-o-gram techniques, hand-processing and toning for a kaleidoscope of colors and effects. The music is structured around original music by De Gli Antoni and Menegon and collaborative musique concrete that incorporates audio from the 16mm projectors. http://www.kingtone.com/odclub.html Venue Info -- 21 Grand 449 B 23rd St. (between Broadway and Telegraph) Oakland 510-444-7263 http://www.21grand.org http://www.21grand.org/map.html Some people may be (and some still are) confused that the name of the venue is a street address at which the venue isn't. Now the street address 21 Grand Ave. no longer exists. People are still confused. Anyone who can come up with a novel, effective way at alleviating the confusion (apart from a name change -- we're not doing that) that we implement will win a special prize. SQUID [08/08] Soul Tracing - Paintings Drawings by Kathleen King
The Squid List -- Soul Tracing - Paintings Drawings by Kathleen King Friday, August 8th 7:00pm - 10:00pm Free! Event Description --- 66balmy gallery presents Soul Tracing Paintings and Drawings by Bay Area artist Kathleen King. Kathleen's work expresses a vocabulary of spontaneous, abstract markmaking: a complexity of tangled line, shape, calligraphic gesture and emotional color. Her working process builds layers that interweave, overlap or obscure eachother with elements seeming to rise, spin, float and fall in mysterious and unexpected combinations. Circles and spirals energize these pictures, moving the viewers eye through the expanding and contracting space, encouraging them to lose themselves in the experience. Her methods seek to evoke a frisson - an ecstatic moment combining joy and fear - and illuminate a tumultuous inner life. Says King, Like Baudelaire, 'I have cultivated my hysteria with pleasure and terror' Opening Reception, Friday, August 8th, 7-10pm Show runs from August 6 thru August 24 Gallery Hours: Wednesday thru Sunday, 1-6pm Venue Info -- 66balmy gallery 591 guerrero street (at 18th street) san francisco 415-522-0502 http://www.66balmy.com Gallery is located at 591 Guerrero @ 18th Street. SQUID [08/13] Slow Motion Landscape
The Squid List -- Slow Motion Landscape August 13 6-7pm $freee Event Description --- slow motion landscape photography exhibit august 7 - september 4, 2003 @ the tunnel top 601 Bush (@ Stockton) San Francisco daily 5pm - 2am opening reception wednesday, august 13, 6-7pm slow motion landscape When shooting music, I'm aiming at the impossible: to capture the sound and feel of a musical performance in a silent, motionless medium. The photographs in Slow Motion Landscape are born of that same impossible urge; to create a visual memory of a fleeting feeling, a moment, a place that doesn't actually exist that way I remember it. The images are fluid and they blur, as our memories do; we don't live our lives in a stuttered sequence of frozen stills. - Gabriella Marks Venue Info -- The Tunnel Top 601 Bush (@ Stockton) San Francisco http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py? It features collaborations and tactical media by The Institute for Applied Autonomy, The Bikewriters, StreetRec, and Spains Las Agencias/New Kids On The Black Block. Accompanying the video is a series of presentations drawing on a network of critical art projects and activism from Chicago.? These projects range from large-scale political actions, spontaneous events, flexible collaborations, and temporary collectives. One of the projects presented is the Department of Space and Land Reclamation (DSLR), an ambitious three-day campaign which sought to reclaim all the space, land, and visual culture of Chicago back to its public citizens.? DSLR brought hundreds of artists, activists, and community groups together for a weekend of interventions, presentations, graffiti, trespassing, pirate radio, community meals, loitering, hacking, guerrilla gardening, public performances, parties, and discussions. The infectious energy of DSLR catalyzed a number of other initiatives such as the utopian festival of local community groups, The Autonomous Territories of Chicago.? These growing critiques of economic globalization and its familiar relative, gentrification, spawned the construction and installation of a fake affordable housing development Daley Village and another project involving the critical marketing of a real property by a our very own real estate agency Pioneer Renewal Trust. Other tactical media organized around Israel/Palestine, 9/11, Chicagos graffiti abatement policy, the war on terror, and the Trans-Atlantic Business Dialogue (TABD) will be shared, as well as video and discussion of the wild, spontaneous street occupation and direct actions against MTVs The Real World Chicago.? These projects represent a unique strain of activist cultural practice which should be of interest to artists, activists, and students alike.?
