SQUID [08/08] Sight and Sound Series: Performative Cinema

 The Squid List --

Sight and Sound Series: Performative Cinema

Friday, August 8th

8pm

$7-10 sliding scale, no one turned away for lack of funds

 Event Description ---

Tonights show features three ensembles that engage in live cinematic
manipulation and sonic
experimentation: Wet Gate, the Overdub Club, and the trio of
Maximillian (film), Jason
Stamberger (electronics) and Liz Albee (trumpet).

Wet Gate performs pieces for multiple 16mm sound projectors as a
band, the machines and
films as musical instruments: collaging projected images and optical
audio tracks from film loops and
fragments, using electronic effects to sample and delay the films'
sounds, slowly ripping the
stitching out from between the soundtrack and image coupled in the film
material. By rearranging the
officially coupled audio and image, Wet Gate re-positions them in an
effort to examine both
image and sound separately and together.

http://www.wetgate.net

The Overdub Club features 16mm multi-projector live improvisations by
SF filmmakers Thad
Povey and Alfonso Alvarez with live music by Mark De Gli Antoni and
Lucio Menegon. The
visuals come from a wide range of sources including newsreels,
industrial films and cult feature films,
and have been hand-manipulated by contact printing, ray-o-gram
techniques, hand-processing and
toning for a kaleidoscope of colors and effects. The music is
structured around original music by De
Gli Antoni and Menegon and collaborative musique concrete that
incorporates audio from the
16mm projectors.

Some people may be (and some still are) confused that the name of the
venue is a street
address at which the venue isn't. Now the street address 21 Grand
Ave. no longer exists.
People are still confused. Anyone who can come up with a novel,
effective way at alleviating the
confusion (apart from a name change -- we're not doing that) that we
implement will win a special
prize.

Soul Tracing - Paintings Drawings by Kathleen King

Friday, August 8th

7:00pm - 10:00pm

Free!

 Event Description ---

66balmy gallery presents Soul Tracing Paintings and Drawings by Bay
Area artist Kathleen King. Kathleen's work expresses a vocabulary of
spontaneous, abstract markmaking: a complexity of tangled line, shape,
calligraphic gesture and emotional color. Her working process builds
layers that interweave, overlap or obscure eachother with elements
seeming to rise, spin, float and fall in mysterious and unexpected
combinations. Circles and spirals energize these pictures, moving the
viewers eye through the expanding and contracting space, encouraging
them to lose themselves in the experience. Her methods seek to evoke
a frisson - an ecstatic moment combining joy and fear - and illuminate
a tumultuous inner life. Says King, Like Baudelaire, 'I have
cultivated my hysteria with pleasure and terror'

New Brutalism Poetry Series: Nick Piombino + Patrick Durgin

Sunday, August 10th

7-9 pm

$4

 Event Description ---

New York poet, Nick Piombino explores form and meaning and how they are
constructed through
the process of writing. He views the contemporary poem as a
transitional object, between the
thumb and the teddy bear. Known for his manifesto-poetry, Piombino was
also featured in
Poetry Plastique, an art exhibit and book about poetry as object.
Piombino frequently
collaborates with artist, Toni Simon on visual art/poetry projects. His
work is also concerned with the
different environments with which poetry is experienced, and finds the
poetry reading crucial to the
evolution of the genre.

Patrick F. Durgin is the author of several chapbooks of poetry; Pundits
Scribes Pupils is from Potes
Poets Press (1998); And so on is from Texture Press (1999) and Sorter
is from Duration Press
(2001). His poetry and critical writings have appeared in numerous
small-press periodicals since
the late 90's, including 26, Aufgabe, Chain, Combo, Crayon, Ixnay,
Lipstick Eleven, Rain Taxi
Review of Books, and Tripwire. Durgin has published / presented
articles and interviews on / with
poets such as Rachel Blau DuPlessis, Dominique Fourcade, Lyn Hejinian,
Andrew Levy, Nathaniel
Mackey, Jackson Mac Low, Eileen Myles, Douglas Oliver, and Rod Smith.
An ongoing
collaboration with poet / translator Jen Hofer -- regarding a potential
synaesthetic poetics --
frequently makes its way into print.

respected. N.I.B. envisions a culture where clowns

own power, and are actively involved in leading within
their community.
N.I.B.s mission is to bring clowns of all races,
creeds, orientations and genders together to build a
peer-based community that empowers them to end

 Event Description ---

BURN THEORY - SAN FRANCISCO

At the end of civil twilight on Saturday, August 16th, 2003 at
precisely 8:29 p.m (Pacific Standard Time) BURN THEORY will ignite! The
location is confidential and only available to a selected group of
individuals. BURN THEORY is located at Latitude: 3745' 40 W
Longitude: 12230' 40 N or OCEAN BEACH in SAN FRANCISCO along the
Great Highway at Fulton.
BURN THEORY began with a small group of rebels, seekers, outsiders,
nerds, and just in general social outcasts. These troublemakers liked
to debate and discuss the questions that everyone else was too afraid
to talk about or even begin to consider as relevant. But the people of
BURN THEORY asked them anyway and so began BURN THEORY in 1996 during
the sub-zero dead of winter in Chicago. In general, BURN THEORY is a
chance to meet new people, have fun, and put your ideas to the test
around a bonfire.
TOPIC: To what extent do laws and authority restrict or protect our
freedom?

When shooting music, I'm aiming at the impossible: to capture the sound
and feel of a musical performance in a silent, motionless medium. The
photographs in Slow Motion Landscape are born of that same impossible
urge; to create a visual memory of a fleeting feeling, a moment, a
place that doesn't actually exist that way I remember it. The images
are fluid and they blur, as our memories do; we don't live our lives in
a stuttered sequence of frozen stills.

Why/Who/What:
Counterproductiveindustries.com presents COLLECTIVE
PRANKS, PROTEST GRAPHICS, AND SPACE RECLAMATION, a
west coast tour of Retooling Dissent, the video documenting
creative resistance projects from protests against the World
Economic Forum.? It features collaborations and tactical media by
The Institute for Applied Autonomy, The Bikewriters, StreetRec, and
Spains Las Agencias/New Kids On The Black Block.
Accompanying the video is a series of presentations drawing on a
network of critical art projects and activism from Chicago.? These
projects range from large-scale political actions, spontaneous
events, flexible collaborations, and temporary collectives.
One of the projects presented is the Department of Space and
Land Reclamation (DSLR), an ambitious three-day campaign
which sought to reclaim all the space, land, and visual culture of
Chicago back to its public citizens.? DSLR brought hundreds of
artists, activists, and community groups together for a weekend of
interventions, presentations, graffiti, trespassing, pirate radio,
community meals, loitering, hacking, guerrilla gardening, public
performances, parties, and discussions.
The infectious energy of DSLR catalyzed a number of other
initiatives such as the utopian festival of local community groups,
The Autonomous Territories of Chicago.? These growing critiques
of economic globalization and its familiar relative, gentrification,
spawned the construction and installation of a fake affordable
housing development Daley Village and another project involving
the critical marketing of a real property by a our very own real
estate agency Pioneer Renewal Trust.
Other tactical media organized around Israel/Palestine, 9/11,
Chicagos graffiti abatement policy, the war on terror, and the
Trans-Atlantic Business Dialogue (TABD) will be shared, as well
as video and discussion of the wild, spontaneous street
occupation and direct actions against MTVs The Real World
Chicago.? These projects represent a unique strain of activist
cultural practice which should be of interest to artists, activists, and
students alike.? Project organizers and participants will be
available for discussion.
For more information about the tour see: http://
www.counterproductiveindustries.com/tour
Retooling Dissent is distributed by AKPress and has been
showing around the world at venues like the IMPAKT Festival
(Utrecht, The Netherlands), Version03 Digital Arts Convergence
at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago) and Artists
Television Access/Other Cinema (San Francisco). Retooling
Dissent has continued to serve as a useful tool for organizing
actions as well as highlighting alternative and creative tactics that
various radical arts collectives have been pursuing. For more info,

 Event Description ---

2good4u, the all-girl boy band behind the Dance! Dance! Dance!
Explosion! and Pajama Jammy Jam variety revues, is coming at you
live with Viva Karaoke!: Searching for Wayne, the first all-karaoke
musical (no bandno monitorall rock!). Who needs to go to the beach
when you can get kung-fu fighting, hot girl-on-girl action, a balloon
dance, and skanky cheerleadersall in under an hour and a half?
This original story of fame, love, and redemption set in the cutthroat
demi-monde of the semi-professional karaoke circuit reveals how four
grown women became the first all-girl boy band. Genuine karaoke host
Eileen Murphy plays Corvette, an innocent, yet busty showgirl fired
when she spurns the advances of a stage manager. Jazz singer Leslie
Dotson plays Dr. Brown, a lab-coated scientist and bartender who
discovers the magic karaoke-enhancing formula Dr. Sing-Good. Melinda
Whitehouse, a founding member of SF comedy troupes Please Leave the
Bronx and The Bitter Show, plays RK Cola, a former country star who
lost it all after a nasty divorce. Her sister and comedic favorite,
Karen Whitehouse plays Pepper Turmeric, an aspiring singer who must
learn the ways of the world.
The cast is rounded out by a host of Bay Area talent, including Jamie
Pickard, a member of the famous dance troupe the Devil-Ettes; Heather
Hawkins, a stand-up comedian who was one of the few biological girls on
