Found out what the problem was, it was that the "top level" folders were
not subscribed. Evidently my other mail client (mozilla 1.4) does not
require subscription to folders which only contain folders, if the
subfolders are subscribed.
Actually, in general I dont use subscription to folders
just installed - SM 1.4.1 (cvs version from 7/03/03)

In the folderlist, where there are sub-folders, the top folder doesnt
display.
e.g.: I have an "email" dirctory/folder which contains the sub-folders
sendmail, spam and squirrelmail I see:
