I think what utility is the wrong question.
At a time when all watches were mechanical, and a reliable watch wasn't
affordable to all, I sometimes used a portable sundial, a compass-oriented
tablet-dial made from corrugated cardboard and typewriter-paper, with
sewing-thread as the gnomon.
No doubt the more easily built Regiomontanus dial
Meanwhile in France...
According to a recent opinion poll, the monumental sundial of Perpignan
(SOLART2) made it into the top 3 of worst/ugliest roundabouts in the
country. It's also the largest in Europe.
