Re: Re: Today's Google Banner - More

2013-04-17 Thread Frank King
Dear Helmut,

It is good to have your confirmation that
the EoT changed sign on 15 April 1707.
John Davis made me nervous!

Of course, this wasn't 15 April here in
England, and the only outstanding worry
is that Basel was still on the Julian
Calendar. I know that different parts
of Switzerland changed in different
years but I think Basel was safely on
the Gregorian Calendar before 1707.

It must have been very awkward running
a country where different parts used
different calendars!

Very best wishes

Frank

I should, of course, have added:

   Happy Birthday to Leonhard Euler

306 years old today and still going
strong!

It is a happy coincidence that he
should have been born on the day
that the Equation of Time changes
sign.

Dear Frank,

The EoT might change sign on Euler's 306th birthday but I very much doubt
(without checking!) that the changeover was the same on the date of his birth!

Dear John,

Tee hee...

 The EoT might change sign on Euler's
 306th birthday but I very much doubt
 (without checking!) that the changeover
 was the same on the date of his birth!

I did wonder about that and hoped no one
would query it!!!

According to the NOAA Solar Calculator,
the changeover on 15 April 1707 was
about 19h GMT.

He was born in Basel and I think they
went over to the Gregorian Calendar
in 1700/01. We were still Julian of
course.

Of course Basel is about half an hour
ahead of Greenwich but this wouldn't
shift the changeover date.

I very much look forward to being
corrected on several fronts by all
the experts on this list!

I just checked using Time Zone Master
The sign of the equation of time indeed did change on April 15, 1707 -
at very close to 21:00 UT

Hi Jack,

I am with you, cute but so what. I appreciate Google noting Euler's 306th
birthday but again so what. I use to appreciate Google and their do no
evil philosophy. This is cute but no longer respected in the monetization
of searches, links and privacy. Things were better in the old days.

O God! methinks it were a happy life
To be no better than a homely swain;
To sit upon a hill, as I do now,
To carve out dials quaintly, point by point,
Thereby to see the minutes how they run,
How many make the hour full complete;
How many hours bring about the day;
How many days will finish up the year;
How many years a mortal man may live.

Shakespeare, Henry VI contemplating battle.

Don't discount the educational value of Google doodles. Someone who
had never heard of Euler might be tempted to click on the weird doddle
to find out what it was about. Just like all those teeny-boppers (do
they still call them that?) who possibly learned about Anne Frank
today for the first time.

Here's what I posted to CANSPACE about the doodle:
