[freenet-support] jSite trouble
Hi, I'm using jSite to insert an already inserted freesite; I was unable to find how define and change what files are included in a container (from the interface). It will be useful also to see some sort of log about successful/ failed insert, and to force the insertion of a site also if some files failed to insert. I was unable to find any docs about jSite other than generic user guide; anyone can give help or point me to some docs? Thanks. [freenet-support] Not enought entropy on headless system
I installed today Freenet on a headless Soekris 5501 (Geode I586 compatible processor) running Debian Lenny The node hangs during boot with the message There isn't enough entropy available on your system... Freenet won't start until it can gather enough. and stalls forever; the old find trick doesn't work either. I suppose that Freenet uses /dev/random as entropy source; can I redirect on urandom ? Hi Evan I perfectly agree with your concern. Apart for the need to have a solution that fits in the Debian architecture, the problem is that Freenet apparently do not allow to choose the entropy source. And worst, the package you suggest uses the audio subsystem, and being the Soekris an headless systes, it is also earless . ;) Many thanks -- +--- http://www.winstonsmith.info ---+ | il Progetto Winston Smith: scolleghiamo il Grande Fratello | | the Winston Smith Project: unplug the Big Brother | | Marco A. Sorry for the answer, I found the solution myself. It is an interesting issue, worth reading. Geode has an excellent hw RNG, but Debian installs the conventional software one that uses HD, mouse and keyboard. All those entropy sources are not present or doesn't work on Soekris. Installing the Debian package rng-tools installs a daemon that uses Geode RNG and give an excellent entropy source Happy RANDoming ! -- +--- http://www.winstonsmith.info ---+ | il Progetto Winston Smith: scolleghiamo il Grande Fratello | | the Winston Smith Project: unplug the Big Brother | | Marco A. I really hope so ;) Ciao. Marco I follow the advice given by FIW (the Freesite Insertion Wizard), i.e., for DBR sites, use a lower HTL (say, 15) than for an edition site or a one-shot site (where you may want to use, say, 25). This makes sense, and seems to work well enough. There is the trade-off with the overall time spent. Big site, in the range 50-500 Mb, requires 3-5 days and half a dozen of fiw restart, because it give varius kind of error memory/connection leaks (in fact can be fred, not fiw, who knows) The reasoning behind this is that the more frequently a site's data is updated, the less need for very deep insertions, as much of the data will be unchanged from one insert to the next, therefore a certain amount of redundancy is involved, resulting in an automatic reinforcement of the data within the network. Less frequently inserted data, on the other hand, basically only gets one chance to take, and will benefit from the deeper insertion (God, this sounds dirty, doesn't it?), distributing the data as far as possible into the network initially, helping it to later disseminate to other nodes more easily. Of course, there are other factors to consider as well. Some of the more popular edition/one-shot sites may be accessed much more frequently than some DBR sites, thereby helping the data to propagate throughout the network, whereas some less popular DBR sites may actually benefit from deeper insertion. It's not a perfect science; there are really no hard-and-fast rules. Just common sense and good judgement, basically, combined with how long you're willing to wait for your inserts to complete. :-) Me or the mankind ? ;) There is the limit of the proton half-life 8) Seriously, changing from htl 6/10 to htl 25 how much affect insert time, in your experience ? A while back somebody did some changes to make sure that keys don't show up if logLevel is less than debug (or minor?).. Er Toad, you give me a negative answer only to my fourth point. Typical commit time for journaled filesystem is 5 to 15 seconds, so modification not writtend is just a possibility. This is not my concern. Let me better explain my thoughts. By design, Freenet must protect his users giving the greater anonimity possible and the greater plausible deniability possible. AFAIK this philosophy must guide thru all implementation. Freenet must do his best to protect all his user (if this is an easy task) including user that doesn't know how use a cryptoloop or barely know how to install a windows program. Naive, wrongdoer or stupid users must be protected too, as long as this is an easy task. Delete all cleartext info as soon as they are no more necessary follow directly from this. I understand that the nature of the Freenet code doesn't allow for an easy review if this happens always in the code. BUT, I see really no reason why Fred must leave files filled of cleartext temporary info liying around, when Microsoft Word (R) itself lost this habit. So OK, do not overwrite, just delete temp client-download files; at least the probability that a forensic analisys can recover it are greatly *reduced*. I think a single code line somewhere in Fred can do this job. Ok this is not an interesting issue, but IMHO it close a big, trivial problem in current implementation and add a resilience that worth well implement it. Or will be implemented only in 1.0 ? ;) Just my 2 eurocent. Ciao. Marco On Fri, Jan 21, 2005 at 08:23:15AM +0100, Marco A. You need to insert a new edition, please see: http://freenetproject.org/cgi-bin/twiki/view/Pub/AuthoringFreesites#Edition_specific_Tips it's explained pretty good there. I already know (in fact I can spell it like a mantra...) but there is no answer to my question. If I insert a new edition too (and I don't want to do so, just refresh the old one) I have problem with keys of unchanged files that lies in my datastore. It is right or not ? If a key is in my datastore and no more on freenet, a key collision is generated, and the key doesn't leave my datastore at all , isn't it ? I heard somewhere in devl of a switch in FNP to skip the local datastore, but fcptools seems not implement it. Many thanks. What do I need to add to freenet.ini to accomplish this? mainport.allowedHosts=localhost,other_host_ip,yet_another_host_ip etc. Won't accept any format of subnets. Don't forget localhost (if you want it to work from the Freenet box) as the default is lost when you set a value. not really correct; there is one form to open up for any IP: mainport.allowedHosts=* Thanks for the correction. I think anyone who did this would be remarkably unwise unless their firewall blocks ports and 8889 TCP from the Internet: otherwise anyone in the world could download anything from Freenet and potentially leave relevant temporary files on the node's host. Those remarkably configuration are called Public Freenet Gateways. If the unwise people that manage them are not so unwise, they tunnel the port and jail the jvm, or use disposable host. If they are really unwise, simply put their resources at risk to give a service to others. Or the deniability of the datastore content is no more a central point of the security model of Freenet ? Anyway, to enable people to use Freenet from an Internet cafe' anywhere in the world, without local node installed on the host, or without host at all it's a Good Thing (tm), IMHO. FWIW. [freenet-support] Monolitic datastore wiped
Upgrading bespin.homelinux.net:443 from 511 to 512 wiped the old datastore. Not in the sense of monolitic - native (I modify freenet.conf to avoid it) but monolitic full - monolitic empty. Maybe this is the reason because Freenet is so empty today ? If all datastore going from monolitic - native are wiped *plus* all datastore of nodes going from 511 - 512, most of freenet contents will be history in a couple of days. Am I right ? JM2C. [freenet-support] [freenet-dev] EasyFreenet: Kaffe bundled Freenet distribution
Try this. - Hi all, Giani Bianchini (thanks Gianni!) a colleague of FLUG (Firenze Linux User Group) wrote an updatable, self contained chrooted distro of Freenet bundled with patched Kaffe 1.0.6. EasyFreenet worked quite well for our purposes, and can be dowloaded here. http://firenze.linux.it/~giannibi/easyfreenet/ The main advantage of EasyFreenet is to shield new node operators from installation patching quirks related with kaffe and with the jail setup There is a construction set too, to build different version of the jailed installation. Chrooted installation need to include some libraries that can be incompatible with some GNU/Linux installations. Just put in your taste of kaffe freenet and run. The .bin version works quite well on MDK 8.2, Debian woody most of RH 7.2 installation I tested. Untested on RH7.3 Further developement (call for collaboration!) can include the possibility of a SSL tunneled installation. Jobjar will be happy ;). Or, at least, people that fight for free software and feel bad due to the fact that Freenet nodes run mostly on non-free JVM's will be Keep Freenet Kaffe-compatible; this is not a secondary goal ... From time to time the MSK insertion give a message like this hm ... can't get redirect CHK ... And after a SUCCEEDED message Somentime the MSK works, sometime not Any help ?
