Re: Login screen on firmware upgradation
You know, folks, I think it's time to admit that the Openmoko project was a failure, and move on. It was a great idea and a lot of us supported it with our money as well as our time, but the device as eventually sold was poorly designed and badly implemented. Even the people who bought it after several rounds of hardware bug-fixes got a clunky device with pathetic battery-life. Since the hardware is crap, it's not surprising that software developers didn't exactly flock to it. Trying to make it usable is flogging a dead horse. The nearest thing we will get to an open cellphone will probably be something made by Samsung, Motorola, or one of the other big consumer-device companies, running Android. When people start using it, they will probably find problems, as did the early users of the Freerunner. Remember that the Neo GTA02 is currently in version 6 or 7 of the hardware. It's now usable as a cellphone (just barely, but usable). The FLOW is in version 1. I don't doubt that it is possible to initiate and receive phone calls on it, but from that to being really usable as a cellphone is a long way. This feature of being able to cycle through 3 volume levels is something that nobody wants, should never have been implemented, and should be removed as soon as possible. How you would describe the 3 volume levels depends on the acuity of your hearing, but for me, they are inaudible, barely audible, and audible in a quiet environment. To pick the only one that is close to usable, I have to futz with the AUX button on every single call. My hearing ability is slightly below the median, but I never have difficulty with a normal telephone and can use a normal cellphone for simple calls in fairly noisy environments (Zurich main train station). Changing the default from inaudible to audible would be a temporary workaround but I think the real solution is to get rid of this feature. ___ support mailing list support@lists.openmoko.org https://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/support

In the current version there are some situations were the modem volume gets reset during call setup and might need adjusting ( fixing ) during the call. Use the AUX button to try and adjust it during the call. This should be fixed in the next release. The effect of pressing the AUX button after a call started was indeed to change the volume somewhat, but it had the unfortunate side effect that the device became unresponsive to all commands including End Call. [Om2009] What needs to be installed to make it usable?
Since the Openmoko with Om2008.12 isn't really usable as a mobile phone, I thought the most useful thing for me to do was to load Om2009 as described at: http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Om2009 and then test it and report bugs. On that page it tells you which kernel, filesystem and bootloader to flash with dfu-util. I did that. Now, when I boot up, I don't get any icons. The default screen just shows the time, and 4 menu options: I/O Msgs Tele People No settings; how do I set things like the time before it goes into sleep mode, essential to ssh into the Openmoko? The other disappointment is that it is still not usable as a mobile phone. It can make and receive calls, but the call volume at the Openmoko is so low it is barely audible, just the same as with Om2008.12. And sometimes (not on all calls) there is a lot of noise at the other end of the line (i.e. at the normal telephone). (Actually I suppose it's possible that there's noise at the OM end, but the volume is so low anyway that I don't notice it.) I'm probably coming across as a clueless newbie, but I really am trying to help with testing and if you give me some pointers as to what to load to get further, I'll also update the wiki again to help other clueless newbies. I did look through the message archive, but didn't find anything useful specifically geared to the Om2009 distro. I know how to use ssh to get into the om (have already done it) and know how to set up iptables on my linux host to get from the om to the net, if that's needed. OM2008.12 - basic usage instructions?
The first thing I did wth my Freerunner after getting it charged, finding how to enter the PIN for the SIM, etc was to flash the 2008.12 uImage and rootfs from: http://downloads.openmoko.org/distro/releases/Om2008.12/ So I'm running a more stable system than the one that was preloaded, but the downside is that none of the instructions on http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Getting_Started_with_your_Neo_FreeRunner seem applicable. Quoting from that page: 'Openmoko starts by displaying the Today page, which is your home page. Icons in the top row indicate the status of the phone. The bottom row consists of three tabs. The tab with a house on the left leads to the Today page you're viewing now' A photo of the screen is attached. It's nothing like that. It shows the time and battery status, and icons for 6 apps. That's it. How, for example, do I get to a shell prompt? Presumably I can ssh into the device over a USB connection. But ssh requires a user name and a password. What are they? I don't see how to find out what user names are defined, or how to reset passwords, except by getting to a shell prompt. I think sections 4 and 5 of the Getting started document (i.e. most of the document) need to be rewritten, unless there's already an updated version on some page I don't know about. Yes, I know this is community-supported stuff and actually I'd be happy to make a start on that -- but first of all I need to know how to find my way around the thing!
