Without a custom plugin or something like that the 'Present' option is
likely your best option (though 'Raise' is also a reasonable choice as it
will hit different limitations imposed by your desktop environment).

If you want every application to be able to steal focus at will then you
can look into turning off focus stealing prevention in your desktop
environment (though that may or may not be an option that is actually
exposed at this point).

The desktop environment might even be configurable enough to let you
bypass the protections for specific applications which would be best if
you only want pidgin to be able to do it; but I doubt most/many
environments are that configurable.

pidgin doesn't use any cookies itself and has no interaction with any

I believe this more likely to be a Yahoo server change (and I believe at

I'm not overly familiar with Yahoo so I may be entirely wrong about that

This is likely Yahoo's doing. They had, last I knew at least, a hard-coded

place over poorer network connections that timer will likely trigger more
often than expected.

It is always possible that this is pidgin's fault but I doubt it.

XMPP requires that you explicitely allow people to see your status before
they are allowed to do that. This sounds like that either did not happen
or some data loss/corruption/etc. occurred somwhere which made the server
forget that this authorization was given. If your colleague right-clicks
on the entry for you in their pidgin buddy list they should see a
'(Re-)Request authorization' entry in the menu. If they select that it
should cause an authorization request to appear in your pidgin buddy list.
Accepting that request should sort this problem out.

Ethan's answer is absolutely correct but in this one instance there are a
couple of simpler ways to do specifically what you asked for.

On Windows on the Conversations page of the pidgin preferences dialog
there is a 'Use font from theme' preference which, when disabled, allows
manuall control of the font used for the conversation window text areas.

On all systems the 'Pidgin GTK+ Theme Control' plugin can be used to tweak
a number of (normally theme controlled) settings. Among those settings are
the fonts used for the conversation window history and entry areas as well
as the font used for the entire pidgin interface.

We currently have an XMPP setup, but there is one major glitch. Basically,
when a user removes somebody from their buddy list, they are themselves
removed from that other persons' list. This is a major problem as our lists
 change frequently.

This is the way this is supposed to work. The buddy list serves a number
of duties in XMPP. Beyond the normal usage of being a list of
people/entities you would like quick access to it is also the mechanism by
which permissions granted to other people to see one's own status are
stored (and vice versa).

When someone requests to add you to their buddy list and you grant them
permission that permission is stored in your roster. When you remove
someone from your roster you also revoke that permission (thus rendering
the other person unable to see your online status anymore). This doesn't
remove you from their buddy list but it will make you never show up as
online (showing offline buddies should still show you as
offline/unauthorized/etc. though).

If you want to stop being party to someone else's online status then the
proper thing to do is to unsubscribe from their presence
(e.g. right-click-Unsubscribe in pidgin). This will leave them on your
buddy list and thus leave your grant of permission to them intact.

Does that make sense?

There is no such thing as a pidgin password. pidgin is an IM client it
uses the passwords you give it to connect you to external IM services (the
same way an email client like Outlook or Thunderbird connects you to your
email system).

Some services allow changing passwords via the client (and pidgin supports
that on some of them) but that's once you have already connected (i.e.
changing an in-use password).

pidgin also, when told to, stores passwords in the accounts.xml file so it
can log in to your accounts without asking you for the password every time
(stored in plain text so if pidgin has it stored, which I imagine it
doesn't, it can be recovered from there).

So, yes, if this is an AIM account then AOL will be the ones who will have
the tools/system necessary to reset a forgotten password (if anyone does).

 that window I find

Is there wasted space on *every* page or just on some? Because the window
needs to be tall enough to account for every page and scrollbars really
aren't a viable solution as they will make the dialog significantly more
unwieldy and ugly.

It might be possible to have the scrollbars only show up if the dialog is
larger than the screen but I'm not sure if there's a way to make that
automatic and if there isn't (which I expect) then that means playing
rather horrible games with attempting to determine final display size of
the window and changing the layout of the window on the fly or (and this
is likely simpler but also more ugly) detecting that the window, once
displayed, is taller than the screen and visibly resizing it.

Which page(s), in particular, are too large for your screen?
What, specific, suggestions do you have, if any, for ways we can cause
that page to be less vertically tall?

Spurred by your original there was a brief discussion in the pidgin XMPP
MUC room about this where I commented that (on my screen) the two long
pages are Conversations and Sounds.

The Sounds page should auto-scale since the large 'Sound Events' section
is already in a scrollable area I believe.

I suggested that, for the Conversations page, we could move the 'Show
detailed information' (and 'Enable buddy icon animation') checkboxes to
the Interface page and that that might help a little. I don't know how
much that'd help (or if it would actually help at all) but it was the best
I could come up with at a quick glance.

-Etan

P.S. It should be noted, for the record, that some time ago we had a large
overhaul of the preferences dialog with a mind to keeping it vertically
reasonable. It would appear though that it has grown a bit since then.

 Thanks

From a short poke around the Eyeball Chat website (which, like many,
corporate websites is chock-full of pointless text) I gathered that their
IM Server (as compared to their various other services and products which
have nothing to do with connecting to them in a way that would make the
initial question makes sense) is claimed to be using xmpp.

If that's the case, and the haven't done horrible things to the protocol,
connecting pidgin to your local (I'm assuming) instance of the software
should be as simple as configuration an xmpp account in pidgin with the
correct username and hostname (and possibly port number, connect server,
and tls settings).

Beyond that I really couldn't say without significantly more information.

All that being said the point stands that if your goal here is to use the
fancy voice and video stuff that is not going to work with pidgin (on
Windows) at the moment (and quite possibly wouldn't work with pidgin even
if pidgin did support voice and video chatting in general, on Windows, at
the moment).

Using this email to attempt to kill two birds with one stone.

Mathieu White, your first email made it to the list correctly, there was no
need to resend (despite what the MXit support contact told you).

MXit support staff, you have been subscribed to the pidgin Support mailing
list. That is why you are getting random pidgin support emails. People
haven't started just randomly emailing you directly with pidgin questions.

As such we would appreciate it if you would conduct your support on this
mailing list or at least send mail to the list indicate that you have
taken the support conversation off-list when you take support off-list
(which apparently you have been doing).

Additionally there is no need for you to instruct people to send their
mails to the mailing list (unless for some reason they have in fact sent
them directly to you but that is something you can hopefully determine on
your end) and no need for you to send email asking us to handle support
emails you have gotten.

One last thing, MXit support staff. I'm operating under the impression
that your support email distributes this email to the members of the
support team. If it does that in a round-robin (or other non-broadcast)
method please try to make sure that all members of the support team
understand the situation. Thank you.

You need to set up an account in Pidgin using XMPP. In the account tab
of the Account properties you enter your username as shown in your from
address to this list, and the domain as gmail.com, then you can enter
your password and a Resource string describing what you want (I use

You can also leave the resource blank.

profile but doesn't tell it to use that as the default location of
 .purple .
So, is there something that needs to be done to make pidgin.exe to use the
.purple folder on the H: drive NOT local.

http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%20Pidgin#Whereismy.purpledirectory

(To forstall the possible Yes, but I know where it is, thank you very

I believe it wants to be set to the new appdata path and not the full
.purple path (but testing that should be quick enough).

The Log Reader plugin that ships with pidgin can read Trillian logs (from
at least some version of Trillian, I don't know which or if Trillian logs
have changed over the years).

By default I believe it points to the normal Trillian log folder (but can

One of the main reasons pidgin doesn't support user configuration of this

The dbus signals are fired out-of-band (at least effectively if not
technically).

By the time your dbus script receives and processes the FileSendComplete
signal and contacts libpurple to request information about it the file
transfer object has likely already been destroyed.

Try using one of the other xfer signals and (assuming the transfer lasts
long enough) you should be able to query libpurple for information about
the transfer.

This issue is why scripts/applications/etc. using dbus cannot alter
messages inline the way normal plugins can.

request_name isn't the right thing for you to be using there. You want to

This is likely why you don't get an error since claiming a name that isn't

someone from your list will remove yourself from theirs. If that's correct
then in order to prevent them from seeing you you would need to block
them.

That being said if all you want is to not see them (and they aren't
constantly messaging you in ways you don't like) simply removing them from
the buddy list sounds like it'd be enough to me.

I believe there were some build problems with older versions of Ubuntu
that made building the PPA packages not work correctly so the decision was
made not to continue attempting to build for them (especially as I also
believe those distros are now past end of life).

But as was said you should be able to build pidgin yourself if upgrading
to a current version of Ubuntu (or some other distribution) isn't a viable
option.

This is one of the current known issues with MSN support. I don't believe
a fix exists yet as I believe this is simply (yet another) change to the
MSN protocol that we simply aren't caught up to yet.

I believe there are tickets filed about this (and the other) known issues
affecting MSN if you search for them.

Re: AIM sending chat requests to Google Talk chats

2011-05-16 Thread Etan Reisner
Google and AOL have indeed worked out some interoperation agreement and
that is the root of what you are seeing.

This interoperation is too new for anyone to really have a good handle on
and certainly too new for us to fully understand how it is supposed to
work and the ways in which it fails to work.

Attempting to IM some...@gmail.com for the first time from an aim account
appears to work correctly for some people (including myself in a quick
test). That is the very first message fails, the Google Talk user gets a
subscription request, and then things work normally after that.

The reverse appears to work similarly (with the first AIM-Google Talk
message still failing, at least with pidgin I imagine the Google Talk/web
client may work around that).

Someone in the #pidgin irc channel was complaining about similar floods of
authorization requests the other day but I don't think that was ever
resolved.

Do you have your Google Talk email address registered as an AIM screen
name? Do the people with whom you are having this problem have that?

The
query xmlns=jabber:iq:last seconds=300/
bit there is you being told the person was last active 300 seconds (five
minutes) ago.

So something is, in fact, indicating that the person is not active. If you
are certain the 'From last sent message' preference isn't active (and the
user isn't using something like the I'dle Mak'er plugin) then I'm not sure
what else could be going on.

It is also interesting, if that person has a status set to become active
on idle (and has idle set to five minutes), that they aren't changing
status there.

A debug log from the outgoing side might tell us something more (but I
wouldn't count on it).

What is the solution to the problem. Moving the buddies multiple times

They move when they log in or when you do? Is this on an internal server?
Are these two buddies part of a shared roster group set up on the server?
Alternatively is this facebook?

Can you get the Help-Debug Window output from when this occurs (either
from when you sign on or when they do). If it happens when you log in then
you'll want to find the snippet of xml that involves the roster entry for
the buddies in question.

What version of pidgin is in use on Ubuntu 10.04?

What protocol is this happening with? (I'm guessing MSN.)

any protocol allowed in pidgin supports international text messaging. I
would go to the IRC channel but I haven't used my IRC account in nearly 2
years and can't remember any of the info.

Help on this would be amazing.

IRC doesn't really do accounts so not remembering what nickname you used
two years ago doesn't really matter. Just pick a new one and connect.

That being said I don't know any services that do text messaging other
than those covered in the FAQ (and those are US only last I knew). I
believe there are some XMPP services which bridge to text messaging but
you can search Google for them as well as I can at this point.

This is because you have 'receive a message' selected as the pounce
trigger and we do not allow messages to be sent in response to messages
coming in because of the potential for horrible pounce loops.
