Problem solved!
The trick was to disable FIPS mode via:
Privacy & Security > Certificates > Manage Devices > Disable FIPS mode
I was then able to set the master password and upgrade (without the
program hanging)!
Happy camper once again!

I like using a master password, but ever since SM 2.30, SM no longer prompts
for it and therefore cannot check mail, it hangs until I force quite the app
(if you know of a workaround, please let me know).

SM 2.30 will not let me clear the password.
Every version since is broken: they don't recognize that a password has already
been set and won't let me set one. When I try to check mail, it hangs until I
