SeaMonkey 2.40 on Mac OS 10.6 browser windows have no menu bar, uncontrollable

2016-03-15 Thread Bob Fleischer

My wife uses SeaMonkey on a MacBook (running 10.6).

Somehow, it got into a state where browser windows fill the whole screen and
have no menu bar, and thus are essentially uncontrollable (except for
keyboard shortcuts). I don't even see how to change the browser window
settings that are accessed via the menu.

So how do I recover?

(Yes, I assume I could go to the trouble and create a new profile. I
created a test profile, and it works OK.)

Thanks for your answers.

In SeaMonkey, do Help | About SeaMonkey and you'll see.

No, that will only show you the version number. The user agent string
is viewed by selecting [Help > Troubleshooting Information] from the
menu bar. Under "Application Basics", the 6th line begins "User Agent".
The value after that is how your browser identifies itself.

You're mistaken -- at least for v.2.39/Windows. Yes, Troubleshooting
Information does list the user agent, but no, About SeaMonkey does, too.

When I do Help | About SeaMonkey, I get:

version 2.39

You are currently on the release update channel.
See a list of contributors to the Mozilla Project.
Read the licensing information for this product.
Read the release notes for this version.
See the build configuration used for this version.
User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:42.0) Gecko/20100101
Firefox/42.0 SeaMonkey/2.39

Build identifier: 20151103191810

What's that seventh line there if not a user agent string?

For comparison, here's the user agent string copy/pasted from the
message to which you replied:

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:42.0) Gecko/20100101

See bug #368265 at .

The problem seems to have gone away, at least for cases where the user
has only one account at the Web site. If there is more than one
account, it becomes necessary for the same password to be used for all
the accounts. That is because Password Manager does not have access to
the user ID on the prior Web page and thus cannot tell which password is
appropriate.

The value after that is how your browser identifies itself.

I went to [Edit > Preferences > Advanced > HTTP Networking] and
unchecked the checkbox for "Advertise Firefox compatibility". That
makes my user agent string:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:43.0) Gecko/20100101
SeaMonkey/2.40

If the "Advertise Firefox compatibility" checkbox is checked, I would get:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:43.0) Gecko/20100101
Firefox/43.0 SeaMonkey/2.40
which I find is rarely necessary.

True, but IMO Amanda's right that the website should be clear,
especially in the case of Linux. The vast majority of Linux machines
are 64-bit (but I don't know whether most of those are multilib or
not). The release notes and system requirements don't say anything
about the download being 32-bit, either. If a new user only comes along
once in a blue moon, that's all the more reason to want to give her a
not-so-frustrating experience.

User-Agent: G2/1.0

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:42.0) Gecko/20100101

This is more helpful because I'm actually using SeaMonkey to post here,
while you're not. Even if I don't explicitly state my version and

Totall agree. Moreover on the official downloads page (URL:

there's a green box with the words "Download Now", there's no mention as to whether the

Amanda, if you had posted with SeaMonkey, I could have shown you exactly
what your SM User Agent was telling the Web, but you didn't

I would have thought it might show up in about:config , if you filtered
on UserAgent, but that didn't work either.

Also, your "sig file" (all the stuff that your email client has added)
should have been automatically removed in my reply (which, obviously it
wasn't) if you/your main client had used a proper sig file delimiter
which is two dashes followed by a space (i.e. -- ) and nothing else on
that line. All your dashes are mucking it up. (I'm guessing your free
email service is trying to get some FREE advertising.)

It has been a very tough release. I think it's the

I did this alone. Kudos go to a lot of people, particularly
the guys/gals in Mozilla's IT and RelEng dept.

to migrate off FTP to S3.

Thanks to Jens Hatlak for taking the time to do the Website

Also, thanks to Justin Wood for giving me this opportunity
to work out the problems myself. If you all take a look
at bug 1233615, I think I rivaled the mess I did with
the GTK bug (conveniently forgotten the # :P ). The

Anyway, most of all, thanks to all the users out there

Oh. Before I forget and in the light of being transparent,
there is a chance I might have goofed something up, especially

also the partial mar and complete mar updates. I hope I
didn't screw things up too much, if at all (here's hoping).
Please do post here on your findings.
