Your observation makes it all the more relevant to try older Firefox

annoyingly doing this. :(

Yep.  I find financial institutions in general to have this issue,
and Chase seems to be the most aggressive.

Yeah, I'm seeing more non-financial ones too like
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/ that takes me to
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/unsupported-browser?err=custom-elements,shadow-dom
(at least, it still supports Firefox). I had a specific thread about
this issue in my 9/2/2020 9:38 PM PDT newsgroup post titled
"RottenTomatoes.com rejects SeaMonkey even with fake UAs."

I remember being a part of that discussion.  It looks like that site's
scripting is querying something deeper in the browser than the UA.

I went as far as the login screen, and there's the usual drivel about
security issues.  Earlier today, I was reading the meeting notes from
Seamonkey devs, and they're pretty current on getting updates
backported.

It really comes down to the people at Chase don't want to be bothered
with anything other than Chrome, current versions of Firefox, Safari,
and maybe Edge.

Yep. This had been around when Internet Explorer (IE) was winning the
web browser war before Chrome joined the fight. Now, IE is way down
like Firefox and SeaMonkey with Chrome being the top. Developers are
lazy, don't want to work more, and don't care. Argh. :(

Devs may be lazy, but with financial institutions, it's actually the
problem of the people who do support.  Consider the following scenarios:

Me: I'm having problems getting logged into my Chase account from the web.
Chase: What browser are you using?
Me: Firefox 73 on Windows
Chase: Go to the hamburger menu, select Options, and then click on [x
and y]

- or -

Me: I'm having problems getting logged into my Chase account from the web.
Chase: What browser are you using?
Me: Mozilla Seamonkey on Windows
Chase: We don't support Seamonkey [dialtone]

It's not just Seamonkey they're doing this to. I'm sure that the same
applies to things like PaleMoon and Waterfox.  I haven't heard of it
applying to Chrome derivatives such as Iron, Epic or Opera, but it may
be that their UA is close enough to stock Chrome to not disrupt
interaction. However, if you have problems and talk to tech support,
it's a good guess that saying something that's not "Chrome" will give
you the same figurative dialtone.

I think it comes down to the institution wanting to minimize operator
time spent on customer service, and if they can't tell you what to do
with what they have on their own desks, they're not going to take the
time to try to figure it out. It would not surprise me that Chase has a
corporate standard of clearing customer support calls in less than 5
minutes, and preferably faster, if they can.  And once a call goes over
5 minutes, there's real heat on the operators to get the call wrapped
within seconds.  And I'll bet there's an internal metric that measures
that very closely.

They're in too big of a hurry to end the call that they have any
patience or willingness to facilitate anything outside of the
mainstream, as they define it.

For what it's worth, I was just at Constant Contact, and they
explicitly complained about Seamonkey, but didn't prevent me from
logging in.

Hmm, we all should complain. Is there a specific contact method you
used? Did they answer back yet?

No direct interaction, just a boilerplate that they pop up after I log in:

Constant Contact does not officially support SeaMonkey.

You may close this message and continue to use Constant Contact with
SeaMonkey,

but we cannot guarantee that it will work.

In order to provide you with the fastest, most secure experience,
we encourage you to switch to one of our officially supported browsers.

Although I can get the idea that a UA that identifies itself as Firefox
60 is something they may consider "insecure" if they're not familiar
with Seamonkey, I have yet to see a site (rottontomatoes
notwithstanding) that makes this kind of complaint that doesn't perform
the way that I want it to if spoof a UA.  Maybe it's the various
tracking and ad delivery mechanisms that don't work, but I'm aggressive
enough with NoScript that those generally don't run anyway.  Yes, I
often have to manually enable the site's own scripting, and things like
googleapis and gstatic (although not google-analytics) and various CDN
and anti-DoS mirrors to get the essential features, but that's still on
me and not the site.

If I really can't wrestle my Seamonkey configs to do what I want, I may
simply use Firefox with minimal tweaking for one transaction.

Smith

Can anyone tell me how to do this?

Google says, Change default programs in Windows 10

On the Start menu, select Settings > Apps > Default apps.
Select which default you want to set, and then choose the app.

Re: Address book handling: Collected Addresses

2020-10-08 Thread meagain

 Original Message
I happen to be running Seamonkey 2.53.2, but I'm realizing that I've
been seeing this for some time -- certainly in various releases of 2.49,
and possibly further back than that.

I make periodic visits to my Collected Addresses address book, and
generally move the addresses I want to keep permanently into other
address books, and discard most of the rest.

Usually, I don't pay attention to handling until much later when I
repeat the exercise (sometimes months apart), but more than once, I've
noticed addresses in Collected Addresses with a deja vu feeling of "I
thought I had moved or deleted that address a long time ago".

What's happening is that once I move or delete addresses, and Seamonkey
restarts, a re-visit to Collected Addresses shows those addresses still
there, although for moved addresses, they are being correctly copied to
other folders.

As far as I can tell, I'm only seeing this on the Collected Addresses
folder, although I don't frequently delete addresses from other folders.

If I was seeing this kind of effect on a mail folder, I would normally
re-index the folder, but I'm not aware of a similar capacity for doing
that with an address book.

Any idea of how to get around this problem?

Yes, I am still running Win7, and have no plans to move to Win8, or
downgrade to W10, the demented cartoon edition of windows.
W10 is basically a graphics terminal to the M$ cloud, nothing more.

Speaking strictly for myself, I do not reccomend leaving updates on at
all, or installing them except individually.
M$ consistently adds undocumented contents, or hides the full
description behind a summary, or uses misleading language.

Instead, get the yearly security rollups, then run the anti telemetry
shell scripts so they can't sneak anyting in.

Nearly all security updates for windows itself concern IE, OE, or IIS.
Do not use any of them and your attackable profile is reduced to a
miniscule fraction.

For myself, I run Win7 with a few extras.
Openshell, set as classic as I can make it.
7+ taskbar switcher.
Network activity indicator.
Explorer++, an open source replacement.
I get ~90% of a good GUI back.

I also replace windows search with voidtools everything.
It is faster, more consistent, and supports network searches.
It also recently began supporting content based searches as well.

This is what I do, do what works for you.

Build identifier: 20180711182954

My email provider is going thru his annual "Update Your Password"
campaign. I've successfully changed the password on his end.

I can not remember how to reset SeaMonkey's copy of the password.
I can go to
   Edit > Preferences > Privacy & Security > Passwords > Password
Manager

and display the existing password.

How do I change it?  ;{
I know I did it last year but can't remember how.
Please help a septuagenarian who is aging ;}

I think the way to go is to try and retrieve your emails using the
old password.

It will fail, and ask you for the new password.
I think it should then ask you if you want to replace the old with
the new (in Seamonkey).

You can't do it directly in the Password Manager.

That is what I expected to happen.
It *DID NOT*
When I select the account name and then click "Get Msgs" the response
is:

Sending of username did not succeed. Mail server ** responded:
Invalid format for plain response.

Since the last time I used the account [less than 1 hour earlier
today], *nothing* has changed on my end.

My connection sees the other end as a Pop Server using Port 110.
and the password being sent insecurely.

110?  Did your Mail provider tell you that the value had changed?
Mine are all Connection Security = SSL/TLS  which maps to Port 995.

I've been on Port 110 for years (decades even ;)
I had updated password on one account and at next login got the reported
error message.
Immediately before telephoning my provider, I had checked email on a
secondary account with no problem. While speaking to the tech about the
1st account, I had her reset the password on the secondary account.
After I hung up, the secondary account gives the identical error message.

There must be a method to change SeaMonkey's copy of the password.
I *DID DO* it LAST year. Just don't remember how.

Pop3 on port 110 is the older of the two popular protocols used to
retrieve eMail from remote mail servers. (The newer protocol, imap, the
Internet message access protocol, uses port 143.)

Many ISP are changing to imap.

The following works for SeaMonkey 2.49.5 under Windows 7. Something
very similar should work for your SeaMonkey 2.53.2 under your Windows
10. It takes two settings.

First setting:

1. On the SeaMonkey menu bar, select [Edit > Preferences].

2. On the left side of the Preferences window under Category, select
[Browser].

3. On the Browser pane, select the Set Default Browser button.

4. On the Preferences window, select the OK button to close the window.

Second setting:

1. In Windows 10, launch whatever corresponds to the Control Panel.

2. On the Control Panel window, select Default Programs.

3. On the Default Programs window, select "Set program access and
computer defaults".

4. On the Set Program Access and Computer Defaults, select the radio
button for Custom.

5. On the Custom pane under "Choose a default web browser", select the
radio button for SeaMonkey and then the OK button.

6. Close the Default Programs window.

THANK YOU for the step-by-step detailed instructions. It Worked!!

I do not expect miracles, but I am happy that it continues.
As for marketing, I don't expect the whole world to install SM and sweep

But it would be nice if a little bit more publicity would be made, for example
through articles in magazines and corresponding portals.
It would surely be nice if some SM would try it and stick to it if they knew
that there is continuity and that they don't have to look for a new program

I wish you a lot of success and that you find possibilities to continue.

The closest I got was GE open with the side bar and the portion that should

Is there a way to get Google Earth or even Google Earth Pro up and running on

The google earth is also a standalone program for PC - all versions are

For a PC delete the old one and install the latest version. Access via a

I get this when SeaMonkey fails to terminate when I tried to terminate
it. For me, this is a rare but occasional problem. To resolve it, I
use the Windows Task Manager to terminate either the application or the
process (the result is the same).

If you are getting this frequently, you might be doing something strange
to terminate SeaMonkey. Is it possible that you are shutting down
Windows without terminating SeaMonkey? If so, how are you shutting down
Windows?

It happens repeatedly after full restart, close SM, open SM. If I kill
the complaintant window "running but not responding..." then TaskManager
does NOT show a part of "seamonkey" running. I cannot see any "running "
part of SM, so it must be a service that SM started that I'm not letting

finish.

See

The WhatsApp page is sufficiently idiotic that, as well as masking
your SeaMonkey-ness behind Firefox, you have uncheck 'Advertise

If pages (eg GitHub) include a pointless browser compatibility
warning, you can use user JS or CSS (directly, or through NoScript
surrogates or Stylish) to hide it.

If the user-agent is the problem, why not just put a user-agent override
for the specific site into about:config?  For example:
general.useragent.override.get.adobe.com/flashplayer set to Mozilla/5.0
(Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.13; rv:57.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/57.0

Browser sniffing has been reported to be done in several different ways,
which if still true means that useragent is not a fix-all solution, but
it does help sometimes.

It would be a nice feature if you could have an option "always send
encrypted" with every address book entry.

An alternative would be a general setting "always send encrypted if
possible", which means the mail program has to look if a certificate
has been stored, and then send encrypted if a certificate has been
found.

What about just having a general "Notes" section in there?  Then one
could add any information of any sort in there.  The MacOS contact
list has a Notes area and it is very useful.

Thank you, but that is not the point.

For legal reasons, certain email traffic must be encrypted, from end
point to end point. For instance emails between me and my doctor.
Assuming we have both set up digital signing, any email traffic between
us should *always* be encrypted, automatically. I should not have to
choose Security > Encrypt This Message to get encryption.

You want this feature setup on a per-recipient basis just like "prefers
to receive mail as " .

I see...  The pictures are not really in the email.
The email just has links to the pictures on other pages, sites,

You could send the links to those pages with the images.

Light, free and fast, it the best I have ever seen.

I am usually using zip -r -S with the whole mozilla dir in roaming.
If SeaMonkey has already been installed just delete the complete
roaming\mozilla dir on the new pc before unpacking. Same with
roaming\Thunderbird.

Should that work ok with Seamonkey?

YES

I should copy what's inside this directory:"
C:\Users\tit_p\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\ey8r9gln.default\

Or you copy
C:\Users\tit_p\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\

note "tit-p" is my user-account-name.

In addition to "tit-p" isn't "ey8r9gln"  user unique?
Yes, that's correct.Except that's not user unique but the default
"profile-unique"
You should copy after or 2 levels before because this strange string is
present in the text of the profiles.ini file located in the SeaMonkey
directory

like this:  Path=Profiles/ey8r9gln.default

Thank you. I am surprized that this sort of backup of profile tool is
not in the suite.

Re: G-Mail Security

2018-01-29 Thread meagain

 Original Message
My usual POP access to my G-Mail was blocked this AM, with a message
referring me to the following explanation:

If an app or device doesn’t meet our security standards, Google will
block anyone who tries to sign in from that app or device. Because
these apps and devices are easier to break into, blocking them helps
keep your account safe.

Some examples of apps that do not support the latest security
standards include:

The Mail app on your iPhone or iPad with version 6 or below
The Mail app on your Windows phone preceding the 8.1 release
Some Desktop mail clients like Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla
Thunderbird

What exactly is Google considering insecure about Mozilla-based mail
clients?

To restore access I had to change a G-Mail setting to allow access by
insecure apps.

Same thing: made my hair stand on end (ok, hairs) - eventually I changed
password on all devices.

Fair points.

So why should we care if our connection to Google is secure? It's just a
search engine.

Hmm-mm, both my check-boxes for certificates are checked and I have no
problem with https://www.google.com

Now, Google is way more than a "search engine" - it is an archive AND
accumulates information on what users search for and about. And now it
listens to every conversation near a Google Home! Home + Dot + Echo
devices now sell at the rate of one a second! (or so they tell me)

Odds are that you attempted to connect to a web server that may have an
invalid security certificate. It tends to happen around this time of
year.

Call or email them and tell them to fix it.
Temporarily you can be not as secure until they fix it by setting
security.OCSP.enabled to False
I would not leave it that way though.

Got it! require

What's going on?

change
   security.OCSP.require
to true and I get the
   Secure Connection Failed
An error occurred during a connection to www.google.com.
The OCSP server experienced an internal error.
trying to load https://www.google.com, but then change
   security.OCSP.GET.enabled
to true and it works!?

Lee

I set both ...enabled and ...required to "true" and all is well
again. How they got missmatched is a mystery.
