Two notes on this:

1) On my 16:9 monitor, with less than two inches allocated for the
Accounts pane on the left, I have enough room for about 150 characters
of Subject, From, Date, Status, etc. In 99% of the cases, that's enough.

2) You might tweak the column widths by dragging the dividers (mouse
over the area just left of a column until the mouse becomes a
double-headed arrow, then click and drag). With a large enough column
width (and you may wish to eliminate some useless columns by clicking
the icon at the far right of the column headings), you'll be able to see
the full subject lines without writing your own custom email program.

I just tested by sending a message to mozilla.test with the following
subject line:

0123456789112345678921234567893123456789412345678951234567896123456789712345678981234567899123456789012345678911234567892123456789312345678941234567895123456789

Of that, I was able to see 104 characters in bold (when it was marked as
unread) and 122 in roman (after I marked it as read). For practical
purposes, that'll do.

Everyone works differently.

My headings in the Thread Pane are Thread, Subject, Status,
From, Date, and Order Received. Sort order is by Order Received,
Ascending, Threaded.

I don't see any inter-mixed messages.

You could reduce the number of headings in the Thread Pane to make the
Subject heading longer. You may already have done that. You could make
it the only heading.

I feel your pain on the indentation of the subject. Sometimes I switch
to View: All, and just shake my head. Some of those topics in m.general
just go on forever. :)

You can do a lot to change the appearance of TB. If you go to the
inside edge of any TB pane, Slowly move across the inside edge until you
see the double arrow. With the double arrow showing hold down the left
mouse button and drag the edge to where you want it.

On my setup I have Lightning in the right pane the length of the window.
The accounts on the Right in a similar pane, and either all of the
messages in the middle or have the bottom half the message.

If you do not have any of these panes go to the edge of the TB window
and slowly move across the edge until you see the double arrow, hold the
left mouse button and move until the pane is the size you want.

I usually open the message itself in a separtate window.

For bigger widescreen, most effective is Vertical View (menu
View/Layout/...). It have 3 panes, sided to each other vertically:
accounts pane | threads pane | and message pane.

Try it.

BTW You may want to read this:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Window_layout_-_Thunderbird

It is also possible to turn off the message pane and use a separate
message window. That can be as big as you like, so there is more room
for the messages.

Yes, I'm aware of this, just not how I'm used to it.

The Wide View layout reduces the height of the Account pane.

Dragging the border of the Thread pane to the left increases its width
while reducing the width of the Account pane.

Hadn't noticed this setting (Wide) before, Walt, now if I can swap the

I think, in the preferences/options, somewhere (I cannot find it just

In these days where screens often are wider than in by-gone days, I

Effectively, leave the Message Pane as is, reduce the height of the
Accounts Pane and increase the width of the Threads Pane.

How does that help Daniel make the Account pane shorter and the Thread
pane wider?

You can make the whole window wider and shorter, and you can move the
partition that is between the folder pane and the list pane.

No, Paul, whilst I think that may have been the alternate layout I
mentioned in my OP ( but although I thought the screen was split into
three layers rather than three slices), it will not suit me as, after a
few replies to an original post, I'd have to scroll right to actually
see the title of the thread in the Thread pane.

The Wide View layout reduces the height of the Account pane.

Dragging the border of the Thread pane to the left increases its width
while reducing the width of the Account pane.
