The installer crashes? When? Any error messages?

[freenet-support] Crash but why

2005-04-13 Thread ajpearce
Freenet keeps crashing (or jvm?). I can't do `/etc/init.d/freenet
restart` because it can't find the process to kill and doesn't
continue though anyway (shouldn't continuing anyway be better design
in the init script?, or at least some help on getting the daemon going
again):

The OS is Gentoo - net-p2p/freenet is version 0.5.2.1-r8

[EMAIL PROTECTED]/var/freenet] # /etc/init.d/freenet restart

Not good. Probably a JVM problem.

 1) Try /etc/init.d/freenet zap. Also, /etc/init.d/anything,
without arguments, will help you in the future.

 2) Toad may be able to help you further in figuring out what's wrong
so you can get it fixed. But even if he does, I'd suggest filing a
bug report at bugs.gentoo.org. They may be able to help, and this
sounds like their kind of problem, anyway.

I don't know what the problem is.

Woah. You must have absurdly expensive electricity... even if your
computer uses 500W, which is insane, it'd cost less than that here.

If you run Freenet non-stop for a whole month, then that's only 10
dollars, if I read you right.

yes, 3 pence would be great! :) *envy*

 1.5c = worth 1.5 cent?? an 1.5GHz Celeron !??
I suppose it wasn't that important...

He got the conversion the wrong way around. 3p ~= 6c.

[freenet-support] Crash; jvm or freenet?

2005-04-09 Thread Jago Pearce
Freenet keeps crashing (or jvm?). I can't do `/etc/init.d/freenet
restart` because it can't find the process to kill and doesn't
continue though anyway (shouldn't continuing anyway be better design
in the init script?, or at least some help on getting the daemon going
again):

The OS is Gentoo - net-p2p/freenet is version 0.5.2.1-r8

This happens regularly so I better not run freenet until I figure out
what's going on.

(( On a side note, I notice 2 other problems with freenet; first, it
costs me 3p an hour to run my computer (1.5c), and secondly the
transient nature of (all?) links seems a problem. I wondered if I
could trust someone else and use thier node as access ))

1) Try /etc/init.d/freenet zap. Also, /etc/init.d/anything,
without arguments, will help you in the future.

2) Toad may be able to help you further in figuring out what's wrong
so you can get it fixed. But even if he does, I'd suggest filing a
bug report at bugs.gentoo.org. They may be able to help, and this
sounds like their kind of problem, anyway.

If you run Freenet non-stop for a whole month, then that's only 10
dollars, if I read you right.

Freenet keeps crashing (or jvm?). I can't do `/etc/init.d/freenet

Your JVM crashed with Signal 11 = Segmentation Fault

#
# The exception above was detected in native code outside the VM
#
# Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (Blackdown-1.4.2-01 mixed mode)
#

Try switching to Sun's latest JVM 1.5 (http://java.sun.com/). You might
encounter problems installing it for gentoo as there are only rpms and .bin
installers; dunno if gentoo can handle these.
But any other JVM with at least version 1.4 should work, too (e.g. IBM's)

costs me 3p an hour

3 pence? 3 pounds?
yes, 3 pence would be great! :) *envy*

to run my computer (1.5c)

1.5c = worth 1.5 cent?? an 1.5GHz Celeron !??
I suppose it wasn't that important...

Yeah, you could try emerge sun-jdk and then java-config
--set-system-vm=sun-jdk and then run Freenet. That won't give you
1.5, but it might work. For what it's worth, I'm running Freenet on
Blackdown 1.4.2.

Is Fred even compatibile with Java 2 RE? I don't know if it is but I would
expect not.

Java: Freenet requires that Java is installed on your computer. While we
are working to ensure that Freenet can work with free JVMs ... currently we
suggest that users download Sun's 1.4 JVM from here for reliability, speed,
and stability reasons.

Try using the latest 1.4 JRE instead and see if the problem goes away.

There is a lot of confusion -- understandably so, because those bright
people at Sun are very bad at counting.

The Java Software Development Kit (SDK) and Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
versions 1.2 and up implement version 2 of the Java language/API.

So Sun's JRE 1.4 *is* Java 2. Oh, except that it's apparently called
Java 2 Standard Edition (J2SE) now. Java 2 version 1.4, if you can
believe that.

(Likewise, Sun's Solaris 8 is really Solaris 2.8, which is *REALLY*
SunOS 5.8.)
