What do you know!!  It worked - following the rather round-about instructions 
they give in those debug tips eventually did the trick.

Are you looking in the debug window?

I'd expect a lot more output.  I'm not completely sure, but I think the 
errors you are quoting appear in the main window, not the debug window.


The first error you report is very general, and basically says something 
went wrong talking to the server.  The second is probably a consequence 
of the first.


Without more debugging information, it is anyone's guess what went wrong.

This is a longer description of the first error:

"There was an error sending or receiving on the network socket, or there 
was some protocol error (such as the server sending malformed  data)."


As you can see, it is very general.

2)   Lost connection with server: Bad file descriptor

Hi, David!!  The above are the 2 messages I receive when I go into pidgin and 
click on 'Available'.  1) comes in first, then  2) follows shortly - or when I 
go out of the site and come back in... and there it is.

If you can work it out .. I surely will appreciate it

I'm afraid my email stalled and the responses to this were in the
backlog, so I incorrectly assumed that the original question
hadn't been answered.

Unfortunately, it looks like no one on the list is familiar with that 
service, and no one has experienced the symptom.

"Bad file descriptor" is worrying, as it is more consistent with their 
never having been a connection than one being lost.

Cannot Seem to Make the System Work

As I am typing out the message I want to send - up pops  :  'Lost connection 
with server: Bad file descriptor'.  What does this mean and how do I fix it so
