Re: [Sursound] [allowed] Re: Soundfield by Rode plugin

2018-12-17 Thread Gerard Lardner
Has anyone done a calibration of a RØDE NT-SF1 and compared the RØDE
A-to-B format conversion with the conventional matrix and calibration
filter A-to-B format conversion - including the effect of a moving mic
or sound source? Anyone willing to take it on? The results could be very
interesting.

"The SoundField by RØDE plug-in uses a new time-frequency adaptive approach for A to
B-format conversion. This complex mathematical process means the phase between the
A-format channels are aligned prior to application of the conversion matrix – essentially
correcting for the non-coincidence of the capsules prior to any further processing."

How might they phase/time align the capsules ??

This must indeed be highly complex, as it is frequency dependent (low
frequencies have smaller phase differences than high frequencies) as well as
source directionally (across multiple blind sources) dependent.

I am still hosting the original site of Stephen Thornton's diaries at
https://www.michaelgerzonphotos.org.uk/ so that links to it will not
break. I may in due course set up mappings so that links to the old
site are transferred to the new one automatically, but not immediately.
Either way, rest assured that links will be preserved.

Re: [Sursound] Rode VideoMic SoundField

2017-01-22 Thread Chris Woolf
Well there may be a few problems to solve before this can become a
commercial product.

Peiter has only been with Rode for a short while so the development of
the array and processing card is probably not complete yet.

I'll predict that the handling and windnoise of the array won't be too
brilliant with the set-up as shown, and may need some further
improvement. And getting the channel gains right with a calibration
routine that fits in with the Rode factory production system could need
some original thought.

I suspect it ~will~ appear as a product - there's likely to be a good
market - but it make take a few more months.

My impression is that they're still thrashing out the specification and
design. The onboard processing is an interesting demonstration of
ambisonics (though the boffin in me just wants the b format signal :-).
More importantly what will the sound quality be like?

Anything of interest at NAMM?

Due to necessity, I've learned to service pretty much every piece of my MK IV.
(I'm the guy who did this:

I'd be willing to take a look at your Mk V. I'm in the Philadelphia area.

Subject: [Sursound] Servicing a Soundfield MK V in the United States.

Hello All,From reading the subjects that have been posted over the past year, I
can see many of us have issues with our Soundfield equipment. I have been able
to make contact with the U.S. based sales rep in Los Angeles, Ca, and I have
spoken to TSL support twice in regards to having our Soundfield MK V serviced.
The conclusion from every angle is that I will have to send it to them in
Marlow, U.K. to have it serviced.Have any of you found any companies in the
U.S. that can, or are willing to service Soundfield products? We believe there
is a power issue at hand and would like to avoid sending it to Europe if at all
possible. Here is a description of the problem from the Professor. "Actually the
problem is that it does not always turn on. There appears to be a problem with
its power supply that causes it to chirp/click repeatedly while attempting to
power on, and often even when it does finally turn on (after letting it try and
“chirp” for a while, the display lights up without the usual channel indicators
and level meters being displayed. Sometimes if you let it sit (on) long
enough, or try cycling the power a number of times in succesion, the unit
starts up correctly and works as expected."Thank you in advance, and all the
best to you all!"Barry
