Hey everyone,
I'm working with a group that is building a 500 gallon batch reactor. We're
trying to implement a continuous wash system with three tanks. Some of the
water from the end of the wash in the first tank will be reused in the
beginning of the second wash in order to conserve water.

I'd say that using a laser diode would work, putting the sensor at right
angles to the beam, would let you know how much dissolved or particulate
material is reflecting light. In perfectly clean water (liquid) the
beam should not be visible.

Hi Will ;
You are looking to build a tubidity meter, not
refractomoter (refractive index meter). Turbidy
measure cloudiness or particulate matter, refractive
index tells you about dissolved matter (like sugar for
example).

I grew up in New Hampshire and they take seriously their motto LIVE FREE OR DIE
written on the license plates. We all need to take this seriously, thanks for
bringing it to our attention. They do seem to count on the fact that we are
way too distracted to notice.

for more info on Real ID, including New Hampshire's passage...only to find out
that indeed New Hampshire has NOT passed a Rejection of Real ID. I'm looking
further into this post haste, but right now it doesn't look
