Oh my god. I wonder how long that was up there before someone bought it? 5
seconds?

In related news (other than the fact that I've been out of touch for months due
to the move and lack of stable internet connection), I lost no less than TWO
ebay auctions for older-model Central Point Option Boards. I found a
modern-rev OB in a local store for $14, but it was little comfort -- I have 3
already.

[SWCollect] Accessible storage?

2001-02-13 Thread Jim Leonard

We all have more software than we care to admit. :) For those of us who have
modest collections, they reside in our house in a room's shelves or
crawlspace. For humongous collections, they sit in storage spaces. But what
to do with collections that just barely overflow a single room's shelves?

I think it was Hugh who had the answer: Custom shelving. Hugh, was it you who
said you have custom shelves built by California Closets? If so, how was the
experience, and how much did it cost? How did you determine the right shelf
height?

The goal is readily-accessible storage -- you know, nothing in storage
facilities or packed up in boxes. How have you all solved this problem?

Yes, I got my shelves done by California Closets. It was about $1,000 for
what you saw in the picture and additional shelves and cabinets not in the
picture. This price also includes installation.

As for size, they come out and measure the room and design it to suit your
needs. They give a free estimate before doing anything. On mine, the
shelves are adjustable so height wasn't an issue. Width is fixed though.

For anyone who wants to see it, go here:

I also use those small stackable closet organizers (you know the white
wood/pressboard kind) in the closet. They are generally thin (width-wise),
but they are tall enough to hold most PC game boxes. They work very well
and you can stack them three high in a closet where they won't look bad.

Best regards,
Hugh

I hope you own your home! That's a lot of money for a rental apartment.

Very impressive. I will probably give them a call and report the
experience here.

That photo is revealing. You have *three* Star Fleets? I have one,
and that's enough for me ;-)

I'm not familiar with those, but my wife will probably know what you're
talking about.

Thanks for the advice! Any other suggestions? While we're at it,
does anyone wish to reveal how they're keeping their collection?
Storage space? Garbage bags? Boxes? Garage?

Hmm ... what should people who are more on a budget do? (Think graduate
students living in an apartment in the Bay Area. Well, not now, but in
several months.) I was just thinking tall bookcases to hold both games I
want to show and that I'm playing at the moment, and boxes for everything
else. Anything better than the plain wooden bookcase? (What's the best
shelf height for this?)

RE: [SWCollect] Accessible storage?

2001-02-13 Thread Hugh Falk

I've attached a pic of the old GOTCHA closet, which uses the stackable
organizers I was talking about. (I use them now to a lesser extent in the
small closet I have in my computer room). These can be bought in any Home
Depot, Target, etc. You can find them for about $15 each during a sale.
Some come with adjustable shelves others don't so know what you need.

Yes, I have 3 Star Fleets. Did you know that Star Fleet I was published by
both Cygnus and Interstel? They have slightly different boxes, but
otherwise, they are the same game.

Yes, I own a home now. I used the stackables when I was in transit. The
other nice thing about California closets is that when it is time to move,
for a fee (I think about $40) they will disassemble it all for you. You can
then move it and they will reassemble in your new place -- assuming they
have an office around there.

I also use those plastic footlockers you can get at any home store to store
items I don't need quick access to.

Best regards,
Hugh

I admit to everything I own on my page. B-)

>The goal is readily-accessible storage -- you know, nothing in storage

I haven't encountered it yet, but I'm getting there, gradually. Still have
enough space to put in another set of normal bookshelves, two if I ditch the
trunk with my Infocom games (three if I move enough of the Shoppe crap).

You're right though, Jim, accessibility is a must. There is nothing more
frustrating than needing to check a fact from an actual game package, only
it's not in the room with you. (I know this from working on my web pages
at the office.)

I use just straight bookshelves, $40 apiece if you can get them on sale.
Get them as tall as your room allows, with adjustable shelves, and see
about getting an extra shelf from the manufacturer if you can, to cut
down on the wasted space. Much cheaper than custom-made (though they do
look great, Hugh) and they'll hold a lot of game boxes.

I also Ziploc-bag my games, to eliminate wear when I'm shifting them around,
taking them down from the shelves, etc., plus it keeps the dust off of 'em.
Better than a vacuum-sealer, IMO, since I'm constantly opening the boxes to
look at props, check dates and facts, etc.
