[SWCollect] The Warp Factor from SSI

2004-05-31 Thread Per-Olof Karlsson

Hi all
:)

I've
got to ask, and hope that somebody more knowledgeable than myself will know the
truth.. I'm trying to compile the history of SSI and this game is really bugging
me..

It
seems to be riddled in mystery. First of all, the box art it has (a pic of the
USS Enterprise from Star Trek) has to my knowledge never been pictured in any
SSI catalogs. That's the first question, the box art as shown in the catalogs,
does it *really* exist?

I know
that many games have different covers in the catalogs, but that's so far been
true only for NEW games, and in later revisions of the catalog, the real cover
art is shown instead of the "prototypes". Not so with Warp Factor, however, it
has the same alternate art in all catalogs I've seen it, stretching several
years, so the prototypeanswerdoesn't make sense.

Another very strange thing is that in the Summer 1986 and Fall 1986 /
Winter 1987 catalogs, all of a sudden Warp Factor is displayed as a Rapidfire
release and only for the IBM (the original big box is for Apple only). What
the..!?

So,
let's ponder on these questions;

 1) Has anybody actually seen the alternate box art for the
original big box version for Apple, except that picture in the
catalogs?
 2) Has anybody actually seen the Rapidfire release for
IBM?
 and slightly more esoteric:
 3) If 1) doesn't exist, does anybody know why the real box
art was never pictured in the catalogs? (The Enterprise
cover)

I
would just love to know.

Oh,
and shameless plug I'd love to hear from anybody willing to trade or
sell SSI stuff. /shameless plug

Cheers,
Peo

I respectfully disagree. ;)

Sealed is a flag, much like IM, MMC and so on. And surely you don't write
FMMC for a Fine copy with MMC? Or perhaps NMSTC? That'd make it a lot more
cryptic than necessary, imho.

Aaargh... yes, that always makes me whince.

There was an eBay auction way back in 2001 for a shrinked Kilrathi Saga,
M(S). Apparently the seller was contacted by a guy urging him to check if
the wrap was authentic and the game truly unopened. Not knowing what to look
for, this poor chap cracked the wrap and happily added a note to his listing
that, yes, everything inside was in mint condition.

I agree. There are already quite a few people on eBay who
sweep up as many bargains as they can, only to list them a week or two later for

too high, then we may start seeing people who have no interest in the games, but

Sure it's certainly happened suddenly - and that is a little puzzling. I
was thinking - perhaps this extreme surge has something to do with that
history of gaming special on the Game Show Network. They did do what I
would consider to be a fairly indepth piece on Sierra in it.

Yeah this is crazy. And concerning.
First the prices doubled and now there's been over
500% rise _from that_ in many titles recently.

Is it perhaps something to do with the Drash-appearings?
Anyways public awareness of these games and collecting urge
has rised significantly lately for some reason, like
has been pointed out.
And maybe some investors are joining too.

Surely hope this will fade away back to normal soon.
Any predictions what will happen?
Is this temporary or will the prices continue to go
even more insane or stay where they are?

When the high-enders get their own copies of given titles
will they leave those alone in next time appearings or do they
gather everything they can get, even multiple times?

The prices will probably begin to tempt forgers to come
out too at any time now (not to sound pessimistic ;).
So get absolutely sure what you're bidding on
(if one can even afford anymore).

RE: [SWCollect] I don't like this at all...

2004-05-10 Thread Per-Olof Karlsson
Oh, indeed! I didn't mean it that way. What I meant (but between the lines I
realize now) is that it kind of kills the market at times. In the end all
the bargains are gone, and all we're stuck with is some resellers who are
only in it for a huge lift-up. That is what I dislike. As long as we have a
living market, they don't damage anything except perhaps fool somebody now
and then.

But when the supply runs dry, they can and will inflate prices for no
apparent reason other than greed, and that tends to kill off prospective
buyers, forcing them to move elsewhere.

This is very common here in Sweden and also throughout Europe, especially in
the record collecting and comic book business (which I'm also part of). For
some stuff, we often end up with some big collectors having most things they
need, and a couple of resellers who charge way too much for the good stuff,
so for anybody to really get into the collecting trade, they'll have to
spend a bloody fortune. That's not good for our hobby, not at all.

[SWCollect] SSI t-shirts / posters / oddbits

2004-03-23 Thread Per-Olof Karlsson

I was just browsing through a 1985 catalog from SSI and noticed two posters
and a t-shirt I don't think I've seen before. Apparently there is a shirt
with Broadsides on it, and two posters, one with Knights of the Desert and
one with Questron. Did anybody actually see these in real life, or even
better, own them?? I'd love to hear about that, and perhaps see some pics.
:)

While I'm at it, I'd be interested to know if there are any other
memorabilia from this gang.. I've never seen anything from them except the
games, so it would be fun to know!

Finally, they did advertise for add-on disks for some games, like The
Shattered Alliance Toolkit, and a bunch of scenarios for various games. I've
never seen those either - anybody has something? I'd be interested even in
disk images if you don't want to part with something original!

Sampling should be fine, especially with a
Vic tape which probably doesnt have any turbo-loader thingie built-in
(those tapes can be pretty tricky).

Just make sure you sample in MONO! On some
tapes you get better results by doing an 8-bit sample by the way, you might
want to try that too. 8 bits, less room for nuances - less
possible errors. At least the theory is sound. ;)

That's correct when converting, but from what I've read on the Net, I'd
recommand the full quality: 44100 Hz (or better, 48000), stereo, 16-bit
samples, to a WAV file (of course, no MP3 or other lossy compression). Then,
the file can be downgraded to mono 8-bit for conversion, but better keep the
original file as a master.

BTW, it seems Escape from Mt.

thingies?? Apparently he's had more of these auctions out as well,
suggesting he's got at least 10, possibly more. Smells fake all over if you
ask me, eh?? I'm no Ultima expert so I can't see if the pic looks suspicious
or not, perhaps somebody can?

Cheers,

Excellent read, C.E. (as always, I love your columns!)

I remember the LGOP t-shirt all too well.. One shop here in Stockholm had
them for sale at the time, for a whopping 59kr (about $8 at the time). I
bought one, of course, and proudly wore it as often as possible ;) Then it
just disappeared when I moved, so I no longer have it! Baah! Do I regret
that or do I... It's almost as bad as not buying the Starcross saucer back
in -84 (my local shop had three of them, priced at about $40).

Hey gang,

If you're subscribed to my YOIS mailing list, you already got my message
about the new column. But I wanted to let everybody know I also have the
full details of my battle with the Infocom T-shirt faker from last year (the
asshole who caused me so much trouble). The link is through the main
column, but you do have to be registered to access it.

Trust me, this one is SO worth the read. B-)

Mm, upon closer inspection it starts to make sense.. I still don't
understand how the heck somebody could turn up 10 cloth maps and
runestones!? That makes no sense at all. Let's hope he's got a good answer!

I asked for a closeup shot of the map, and asked that multiple items be
in the picture (I only see a picture of one set of items in the
auction). I also asked how he came across so many. If I get a
reasonable answer, I'll tag one and compare it to my known original.
Yeah, it would be a drag to fake these.

He has feedback from multiple users, his purchases are largely
consistent w/RPGing, his account is ancient (if not a bit sparse on
feedback but perhaps he is just bad w/follow-up). Ironic when you
consider a certain online newsletter that joked about 10 Drash's
suddenly appearing.

First off, he might have screwed up the auction listing. It happens

 to us all. ;-)

The four runes on the left look correct. I can't tell from the
photo
about the runes on the right. One should be an I and the other should
be |` (that is, a upright I with a serif descending from the top to
the right). That doesn't necessarily mean anything either way,
though. Anyone with a set plus the availability of some aluminum and
a stamp could easily churn out fakes.

The cloth map itself looks right at first glance. That would almost

certainly be genuine as the cost to making them is hideous. Richard
Garriott has said that economic pressures cause folks to want to
eliminate the map and that Origin always burned the map makers.
That is, the map makers discovered that the maps were always a losing
proposition and never did them again.

I recently built a new machine and attempted to get an old dual drive

That does sound like a bad cable, or even a good cable turned 180 degrees.

RE: [SWCollect] Need advice regarding a Wasteland purchase

2004-01-16 Thread Per-Olof Karlsson
Well, I kinda see it as preserving a legacy. How many originally
shrinked versions of a game will be around in fifty years?

Yeah, of course I understand this view. :) I'd much rather preserve the
whole package though. I like to make scans of the contents for instance,
which is rather hard when it's shrinkwrapped. ;) I think one of the more
important tasks we as collectors have is to document history.

RE: [SWCollect] Need advice regarding a Wasteland purchase

2004-01-15 Thread Per-Olof Karlsson

Ive just told Stefan this, but for
the rest:

n
All EA
folder-type games were shrinkwrapped when new, so this is obviously a used
game.

n
The tape
on the disk sleeves is not supposed to be there, somebody probably but them
there due to damages on the sleeve.

n
The tape
on the right-hand side of the sleeve is a common thing for dealers to do when
they re-sell used games. This is mainly done to prevent things from falling out
of the sleeve _and_ from
preventing would-be thiefs to snatch something from the inside

n
I agree
to the mis-use of the term new Ive got many
shrinkwrapped games that are obviously new but which are far from mint (crushed
boxes, lots of price tags, tears in the shrink and so on). I think the best way
to describe a really new game is MINT SEALED as suggested by BL.

Cheers,

Peo

Is there an auction link you can provide?

I don't know too much about Wasteland, but I do know that if
it's not in the original shrinkwrap, it technically is not NEW. If he had
it already, why would he open it? Some inexperienced sellers/collectors
will call something NEW if it looks new, even if it's open. Technically,
NEW isn't even an accepted term among collectors, and MINT SEALED is the
equivilent toperfect condition, still in original shrinkwrap. Under
accepted terms, this one would be MINT or VERY GOOD.

Subject: [SWCollect] Need
advice regarding a Wasteland purchase

Hello group,

My name is Stefan and I am gamoholic.

:)

I need some advice, preferrably from someone who knows what
a NEW copy of Wasteland should look like. I have included a picture of a game I
just bought. He declared it to be NEW, and said he got this one for christmas
88-89, but that he already had the game so he never played this one.

First of all there is a piece of tape on the front cover, as
you can see. It is appearantly a pricetag, which immidiately
suggests it was bought used. There is also some kind of tear to the right of
the cover, also visible, where there was some kind of tape. I assume some tape
was used to hold the box together? (since it is a fold-out)

Manuals appear to be new and not used. But regarding the
disks. The two disc sleeves are put together using some kind of white tape,
this looks very unprofessional but I have seen that kind of tape before on
original old games so I am not sure. Some input would be appreciated, so I know
whether or not to complain.

/Stefan

I support this view too. Shrinkwrapped items to me are interesting mainly
because I know it's all in the box, and if mint also that it's all in
perfect condition. Other than that, I'm not too interested. I can be found
removing the shrink when I'm curious enough and don't have an open copy
around. As long as my game is in excellent condition and complete, I'm
happy! I do keep many of them still in wrap due to the financial aspect of
things, but I wouldn't be too surprised if this attitude would go away much
like it did with comic books. If you can't see what's inside, look at the
stuff that came with it, then what's the point? Other than being an
investment, I see no reason at all to keep it in shrinkwrap.

This thing with shrinkwrap reminds me of when the comic book companies
started to polybag some of their comics...essentially to shrinkwrap them.
There was a whole debate as to whether polybagged comics that had been
opened were worth less than sealed copies. The consensus eventually was
something like screw the comic companies, this is BS, I'm not going to
start buying 2 copies of every comic to preserve the value of my collection
while still being able to read it, so an opened polybagged comic came to
have the same value as a sealed one. The comic companies pretty much stopped
doing it too.

RE: [SWCollect] Need advice regarding a Wasteland purchase

2004-01-15 Thread Per-Olof Karlsson
I don't think it will go away, because computer game software has
*always* come wrapped or sealed in some way. Hell, even Akalabeth came
in a bag. That is completely different from comics, whose value was
*never* tied to bags, always condition, until companies started bagging
them.

This is true. But still, what's the point of having a package you can't do
anything with? It's about as exciting as having a comic or why not an
ordinary book sealed in plastic. Guaranteed new, yes, but hardly interesting
in any other aspect. (neglecting financial value now)

I'm not saying the sealed = more $$ formula is fair and just, but it
is extremely accurate in determining how much something will fetch on
ebay or in trade. I think it's unanimous that, in terms of dollar
value, sealed non-sealed. So the scale was built with that in mind.

Absolutely, sealed copies are always more expensive. Actually, I even like
that, because it's easier to buy near-mint copies at more down-to-earth
prices.. ;)
