[SWCollect] The Warp Factor from SSI
Hi all :) I've got to ask, and hope that somebody more knowledgeable than myself will know the truth.. I'm trying to compile the history of SSI and this game is really bugging me.. It seems to be riddled in mystery. First of all, the box art it has (a pic of the USS Enterprise from Star Trek) has to my knowledge never been pictured in any SSI catalogs. That's the first question, the box art as shown in the catalogs, does it *really* exist? I know that many games have different covers in the catalogs, but that's so far been true only for NEW games, and in later revisions of the catalog, the real cover art is shown instead of the "prototypes". Not so with Warp Factor, however, it has the same alternate art in all catalogs I've seen it, stretching several years, so the prototypeanswerdoesn't make sense. Another very strange thing is that in the Summer 1986 and Fall 1986 / Winter 1987 catalogs, all of a sudden Warp Factor is displayed as a Rapidfire release and only for the IBM (the original big box is for Apple only). What the..!? So, let's ponder on these questions; 1) Has anybody actually seen the alternate box art for the original big box version for Apple, except that picture in the catalogs? 2) Has anybody actually seen the Rapidfire release for IBM? and slightly more esoteric: 3) If 1) doesn't exist, does anybody know why the real box art was never pictured in the catalogs? (The Enterprise cover) I would just love to know. Oh, and shameless plug I'd love to hear from anybody willing to trade or sell SSI stuff. /shameless plug Cheers, Peo
RE: [SWCollect] Ouch
I respectfully disagree. ;) Sealed is a flag, much like IM, MMC and so on. And surely you don't write FMMC for a Fine copy with MMC? Or perhaps NMSTC? RE: [SWCollect] I don't like this at all...
I agree. There are already quite a few people on eBay who sweep up as many bargains as they can, only to list them a week or two later for a much higher price. Kind of destroys the hobby, methinks. - Peo From: Stephane Racle [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: den 10 maj 2004 18:28To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: Re: [SWCollect] I don't like this at all... While I'm appreciative of the fact that my collection is increasing in value, I don't see high prices as a good thing. I know I don't collect for money... I wonder how many of us share your perspective? I'd much rather be able to add new items to my collection for reasonable prices. If the prices stay too high, then we may start seeing people who have no interest in the games, but are rather just there to make money - buy high, sell higher.StephaneBL wrote: Why would you hope it fades back to normal? Anyways public awareness of these games and collecting urge has rised significantly lately for some reason, like has been pointed out. And maybe some investors are joining too. Surely hope this will fade away back to normal soon. Any predictions what will happen? Is this temporary or will the prices continue to go even more insane or stay where they are? When the high-enders get their own copies of given titles will they leave those alone in next time appearings or do they gather everything they can get, even multiple times? The prices will probably begin to tempt forgers to come out too at any time now (not to sound pessimistic ;). RE: [SWCollect] I don't like this at all...
Oh, indeed! I didn't mean it that way. What I meant (but between the lines I realize now) is that it kind of kills the market at times. In the end all the bargains are gone, and all we're stuck with is some resellers who are only in it for a huge lift-up. That is what I dislike. As long as we have a living market, they don't damage anything except perhaps fool somebody now and then. But when the supply runs dry, they can and will inflate prices for no apparent reason other than greed, and that tends to kill off prospective buyers, forcing them to move elsewhere. This is very common here in Sweden and also throughout Europe, especially in the record collecting and comic book business (which I'm also part of). For some stuff, we often end up with some big collectors having most things they need, and a couple of resellers who charge way too much for the good stuff, so for anybody to really get into the collecting trade, they'll have to spend a bloody fortune. That's not good for our hobby, not at all. - Peo Jim Leonard wrote: There will always be people who want to make some money; I don't have a problem with that at all. [SWCollect] SSI t-shirts / posters / oddbits
I was just browsing through a 1985 catalog from SSI and noticed two posters and a t-shirt I don't think I've seen before. Apparently there is a shirt with Broadsides on it, and two posters, one with Knights of the Desert and one with Questron. Did anybody actually see these in real life, or even better, own them?? I'd love to hear about that, and perhaps see some pics. :) While I'm at it, I'd be interested to know if there are any other memorabilia from this gang.. I've never seen anything from them except the games, so it would be fun to know! Finally, they did advertise for add-on disks for some games, like The Shattered Alliance Toolkit, and a bunch of scenarios for various games. I've never seen those either - anybody has something? RE: [SWCollect] Here we go.....
Sampling should be fine, especially with a Vic tape which probably doesnt have any turbo-loader thingie built-in (those tapes can be pretty tricky). Just make sure you sample in MONO! On some tapes you get better results by doing an 8-bit sample by the way, you might want to try that too. 8 bits, less room for nuances - less possible errors. The C64 tapes Ive sampled myself worked when done in mono but would give me loading errors if I tried stereo, so I would not recommend using stereo for anything. Am I misinterpreting what he wrote perhaps? If this is really true, I cannot for the life in me understand the prices on these games. RE: [SWCollect] New Column Just Posted
It's almost as bad as not buying the Starcross saucer back in -84 (my local shop had three of them, priced at about $40). Whenever I find myself lamenting not buying things at their regular prices back then, I remember the good deals I *did* get Indeed! No use in mourning past stupidities. :) I've made many bargains since then, so it more than well evens out! For instance, I've just bought a sealed Suspended mask for $100 including shipping, and that must qualify as a bargain... RE: [SWCollect] 5.25s vs. 3.5s
I recently built a new machine and attempted to get an old dual drive like this working but couldn't :-( Light was constantly on, like the cable was bad. I'll try again. That does sound like a bad cable, or even a good cable turned 180 degrees. - Peo -- This message was sent to you because you are currently subscribed to the swcollect mailing list. RE: [SWCollect] Need advice regarding a Wasteland purchase
Well, I kinda see it as preserving a legacy. How many originally shrinked versions of a game will be around in fifty years? Yeah, of course I understand this view. :) I'd much rather preserve the whole package though. I like to make scans of the contents for instance, which is rather hard when it's shrinkwrapped. ;) I think one of the more important tasks we as collectors have is to document history. - Peo -- This message was sent to you because you are currently subscribed to the swcollect mailing list. RE: [SWCollect] Need advice regarding a Wasteland purchase
Ive just told Stefan this, but for the rest: n All EA folder-type games were shrinkwrapped when new, so this is obviously a used game. n The tape on the disk sleeves is not supposed to be there, somebody probably but them there due to damages on the sleeve. n The tape on the right-hand side of the sleeve is a common thing for dealers to do when they re-sell used games. This is mainly done to prevent things from falling out of the sleeve _and_ from preventing would-be thiefs to snatch something from the inside n I agree to the mis-use of the term new Ive got many shrinkwrapped games that are obviously new but which are far from mint (crushed boxes, lots of price tags, tears in the shrink and so on). I think the best way to describe a really new game is MINT SEALED as suggested by BL. Cheers, Peo From: BL [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: den 15 januari 2004 16:28 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [SWCollect] Need advice regarding a Wasteland purchase Is there an auction link you can provide? I don't know too much about Wasteland, but I do know that if it's not in the original shrinkwrap, it technically is not NEW. If he had it already, why would he open it? Some inexperienced sellers/collectors will call something NEW if it looks new, even if it's open. Technically, NEW isn't even an accepted term among collectors, and MINT SEALED is the equivilent toperfect condition, still in original shrinkwrap. Under accepted terms, this one would be MINT or VERY GOOD. - Original Message - From: Stefan Lindblom To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, January 15, 2004 10:12 AM Subject: [SWCollect] Need advice regarding a Wasteland purchase Hello group, My name is Stefan and I am gamoholic. :) I need some advice, preferrably from someone who knows what a NEW copy of Wasteland should look like. I have included a picture of a game I just bought. He declared it to be NEW, and said he got this one for christmas 88-89, but that he already had the game so he never played this one. First of all there is a piece of tape on the front cover, as you can see. It is appearantly a pricetag, which immidiately suggests it was bought used. There is also some kind of tear to the right of the cover, also visible, where there was some kind of tape. I assume some tape was used to hold the box together? (since it is a fold-out) Manuals appear to be new and not used. But regarding the disks. The two disc sleeves are put together using some kind of white tape, this looks very unprofessional but I have seen that kind of tape before on original old games so I am not sure. Some input would be appreciated, so I know whether or not to complain. /Stefan
RE: [SWCollect] Need advice regarding a Wasteland purchase
I support this view too. Shrinkwrapped items to me are interesting mainly because I know it's all in the box, and if mint also that it's all in perfect condition. Other than that, I'm not too interested. I can be found removing the shrink when I'm curious enough and don't have an open copy around. As long as my game is in excellent condition and complete, I'm happy! I do keep many of them still in wrap due to the financial aspect of things, but I wouldn't be too surprised if this attitude would go away much like it did with comic books. If you can't see what's inside, look at the stuff that came with it, then what's the point? Other than being an investment, I see no reason at all to keep it in shrinkwrap. - Peo -Original Message- From: Feldhamer, Stuart [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: den 15 januari 2004 21:45 To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: RE: [SWCollect] Need advice regarding a Wasteland purchase This thing with shrinkwrap reminds me of when the comic book companies started to polybag some of their comics...essentially to shrinkwrap them. There was a whole debate as to whether polybagged comics that had been opened were worth less than sealed copies. The consensus eventually was something like screw the comic companies, this is BS, I'm not going to start buying 2 copies of every comic to preserve the value of my collection while still being able to read it, so an opened polybagged comic came to have the same value as a sealed one. The comic companies pretty much stopped doing it too. Stuart -- This message was sent to you because you are currently subscribed to the swcollect mailing list. RE: [SWCollect] Need advice regarding a Wasteland purchase
I don't think it will go away, because computer game software has *always* come wrapped or sealed in some way. Hell, even Akalabeth came in a bag. That is completely different from comics, whose value was *never* tied to bags, always condition, until companies started bagging them. This is true. But still, what's the point of having a package you can't do anything with? It's about as exciting as having a comic or why not an ordinary book sealed in plastic. Guaranteed new, yes, but hardly interesting in any other aspect. RE: [SWCollect] Need advice regarding a Wasteland purchase
I'm not saying the sealed = more $$ formula is fair and just, but it is extremely accurate in determining how much something will fetch on ebay or in trade. I think it's unanimous that, in terms of dollar value, sealed non-sealed. So the scale was built with that in mind. Absolutely, sealed copies are always more expensive. Actually, I even like that, because it's easier to buy near-mint copies at more down-to-earth prices.. ;) - Peo -- This message was sent to you because you are currently subscribed to the swcollect mailing list.
