I agree with Edward here. Those materials are copyrighted and when EA bought Origin that purchase included all of Origin's intellectual properties. You can't compile, and redistribute any of it without their express permission and probably a royalty fee. This brings up the whole issue of abandonware. It's a wonderful concept that old unused intellectual properties, that are no longer supported by their owners become public domain for historical preservation purposes, but it doesn't actually work. Their protection isn't limited in the slightest. If you want to make a backup of the old tapes for your own personal use (aka you are the lawful owner of them and are backing them up for your own preservation purposes) then you are ok, but as soon as you give one of those copies to a friend it's just another form of piracy, and if you charge for it then you are making yourself a huge target for action. Although your idea is a good one (I would've bought a copy for SURE!), I don't really think that it would 'fly'. But they do have the right to control how their information is dissemenated, since they certainly paid for the information/product itself. You have LOTS of other good ideas---don't give up! I'm an archivist, and VHS tapes degrade (literally disintegrate) over as little as 10 years. I want to preserve this info. At this point I don't care about distributing the info, I just want to remaster it so that *some pristine copy exists* before they're all useless. VHS video degrading is *NOT* the same issue as old disks in a shrinkwrap package: You can get a perfect copy 1000 generations down the line because disks are digital. VHS is analog, and any generational copy produces significant loss. Would any of you be willing to lend me said videos just for that purpose -- to remaster the video and send it back to you along with a DVD? For those who don't know, the VHS tape that we're referring to is a high-quality version of the AVI file that was included in the 'Behind The Screens' CD, which was released with the Official Wing Commander 3 Strategy Guide (hintbook). Incidentally, that particular video was produced by Adam Foshko, Lead producer and writer for the soon-to-be-released FREELANCER! I've heard a lot about the game lately, and I've been told that it's basically an updated version of Privateer! They were obviously made 'in-house', and they are not the best-produced commercials that I've ever seen, but they are an interesting look at the birth of computer game advertising. EA hadn't purchased Origin by that time. -- Unfortunately when EA bought Origin out they also got the rights to all of their older titles. Do they have to be VHS tapes? There were tons of making-of videos included on CDs with various games. Also, have you considered the legality of this (not that I care)? The scope of this project was behind the scenes and/or making-of videos -- inside trivia stuff that any collector would drool over. So, so far, I can only think of four: - Sierra promo videos (1989 and 1990 I believe I have contacts for, were there any more?) - 7th Guest making-of bundled with early versions (I have this) - Wing Commander VHS tape (I do not have this) Can anyone think of any more? (Also: There are some CDROM videos that may fall into this scope, like the Ken Roberta interview snippets on CDROM bundled with the Robert Williams collection, and I can remember a Robert Williams promo interview on some CDROM gaming multimedia magazine that was popular in the mid 1990s, but I haven't decided on including those yet. Sorry for missing that part of the post. If you can clean the AVIs up, then that would seem to me to be a worthwhile part of the project: convert crappy AVI into good DVD. Also, some of these AVI videos are better quality than others... Since I am selling it at practically no profit (like, $1 above cost) I figured that it wouldn't be an issue. Getting permission probably wouldn't be too hard, but it would take a while as I'm not sure Ken is happy (or able) to lend Sierra copyrights. There was a videotape of various classic Atari and other early 8-bit advertisements sold -- I have no idea if that was legal as well.
