In my twenty or so years of watching the sport a couple that stick in my mind that
haven't been mentioned.
Joaquim Cruz and his four races of front running to win the 800 in LA 84. I just love
that sort of tactic.
Burrell vs Lewis in the 100 at US Champs 91. Almost more memorable than the fact

I have to say something about this. We have been down this road

Note that WC standards are now linked to OG, which didn't

WHY??
If i were king the world champs would be come less like and less linked to the
olympics.

I was wondering if someone on the list has some insight into why the A and B standards
for the World Championships continue to escalate relative to the yearly world lists.
For instance I randomly picked 4 field events (mens and womens HJ and DT) and looked
at the average field size for 97,99
I find the way entries into the US championships are treated at the very least odd.
Rules are publicly published, athletes enter and then declare. In one case (Dan
OBrien) rules are completely ignored. In another case after athletes declare they seem
to be bent severely. In both the case of
I noticed on the entry list at
http://www.usatf.org/events/2002/USAOutdoorChampionships/entry/status.asp that Dan
O'Brien is listed as qualified. I was wondering how that is? I can not figure out any
of the exclusions that would fit as he has not to my knowledge won a world champ's,

First of all let me state that as a fan of the sport (and at the college and elite
level never having any other status) that I very much like the idea of regional
qualifying. I generally travel to one major meet (US Champs,NCAA Champs, Oly Trials,
WC, OG etc) and one or two other minor meets.
If this message gets through it will be the only way I have figured out how to get
messages to the list since upgrading to AOL 7.0.(by sending mail via the aol.com web
site) Anyone else having these problems (or already fixed them).

I am considering going to the NCAA Indoor in Fayetteville. Just searching
various University of Arkansas and NCAA sites I have been unable to get any
information about ticket prices etc. Anyone know prices or have a number
(preferably an 800 number) that I could call. I realize this is not a
In an odd bit of programming my schedule shows the Oxygen network (channel

hours of coverage of the Stockholm Grand Prix at 7:00 am and again at 4:00 PM
central time tomorrow August 26. Over five weeks after the fact
I won't jump into the middle of the best competition discussion (although
having attended US Oly trials in 88 and 92 and watching as close as possible
in 96 and 00 I agree with Conway's choice of 88) but would like to comment on
how much I enjoyed Edmonton. I attended Rome in 83 (with a TFN
While I wholeheartedly agree with RT's suggestion of a World Championships
completely free of by nation restrictions (which I posted some stuff to the
list a couple years ago advocating), it seems a few folks GH, etc., who know
more about IAAF politics than I say it will never happen.
I have been looking at the USATF qualifiers list at
http://www.usatf.org/events/2001/USAOutdoorChampionships/entryStatus.asp and
the following questions and comments come to mind. First of all the lists
seems to be firming up with only three total entries listed as open and three

Depending on what regional sports network you get (If any) you can catch one
ore more of the conference meets over the next couple weeks. What follows is
a search for track and field from the directv.com web site. Sorry I ran out
of energy to continue filling in the blanks as to what exactly
Edmonton Journal is reporting Michael Johnson is interested in competing on
the US 4 x 400 relay team at the World Championships in Edmonton. I have also
seen reports there will be a conference call this weekend among USATF folks
to decide whether to allow that, given that Michael has no

Previous threads have pointed out several flaws in the current IAAF world
rankings system. I believe they are in fact numerous flaws and they need to
be addressed. Some are probably reasonably straightforward to fix and some
are not. One issue that has not been mentioned on this list is the
I have now received confirmation of my tickets for the 2001 World
Championships and am now looking for hotels. I have been somewhat
disappointed with the list of hotels available via the 2001.edmonton.com web
site. I assume most of the really nice hotels have already been taken by
officials,
