After emptying the folder with the CTRL-A go check the trash folder.
The messages that you just deleted should wind up in the trash folder
unless you have your system set to empty trash each time you exit
ThunderBird. Generally
After deleting any messages I just hit the status line hot key. It tells
me how many were moved from the current folder to trash followed by
unread count and total count. So if I delete all it will say, moved x
messages from current folder name to Trash, Unread 0, Total 0.

I use Thunderbird, I hit control-a, then the delete key and that seems
to empty the folder but I can't verify that they are gone.
