The substantial amount of memory you are talking about is the resultset? Or the partially generated XML per query? In implementation detail this could be offloaded to the webserver when generated. It's several things. It is holding all the XML in memory, it is holding all the nodes in memory while we find the ways that use them, etc. Some are avoidable by not using rails and some are not. The alternative is do much more complicated database queries which are likely to be slower (impossibly so on mysql, but possibly manageable with a different database). I still do not see how your database queries can be your main pain. That is just a one time bench and test action. Again MySQL is not /that/ bad. I really don't see a reason why first so much fuzz need to be generated to make things better for everyone. MySQL cannot cope with joining the node and way tables so you have to hold all the nodes in memory and then do a fetch of the ways which use those nodes. I have tried various ways to construct a query which fetches all the ways in a given bbox directly and have failed to find anything that the optimiser can cope with. Don't forget our last IRC conversation where you were unable to tell me why a specific FCGI client was borking on any request (get/put). While a new request just worked. This indicates there are more problems with Ruby-on-Rails read/write actions than you are now talking about now. I'm not aware of having spoken to you on IRC to be honest. If I'd known it was you I probably wouldn't have entered into the conversation. I hope you are kidding. Why would be kidding. You've been trolling here for quite long enough for me to know what you like and (until today) I've been pretty much ignoring any thread that you're posting in for at least a month now. If it is the conversation I think it is then I didn't say I didn't know why it was breaking - there are a number of reasons why that happens some of which I understand and some of which I don't. What I said was that I had no way to tell which daemon was causing the problem. (17:36:04) Skinkie: TomH: could you check the api server for a hanging fcgi process? The most efficient data-structure to hold IDs in is either an array, bitset or a hashset, depending on your access-pattern. As the runtime should be dominated by the database-calls anyway and array or bitset can be used as it consumes less memory here. Hi, Marcus Wolschon wrote: So...why is it that you hold the result-set of the nodes-query in memory again? While not mandated by the XML structure, the XML document we return is usually sorted - nodes, ways, relations, each in ascending ID order. Because a way or relation may require additional nodes to be included that lie outside of the bounding box, we can only return the nodes after we have processed ways and relations. For the computer literate, all this information is available here: http://trac.openstreetmap.org/browser/sites/rails_port/app/controllers/api_controller.rb#L87 This could of course be alleviated by allowing the XML to be mixed, i.e. some nodes, then some ways, then some more nodes and so on. Then, one would only have to find a good way to have Ruby stream the results, something which is, as far as I understand from previous posts on this list, not a core feature of Ruby. Anyway, the question was on how much of the current load is done by non-writing queries (not just /map). [OSM-talk] enclosed areas = borders
Hi, I am working on how to import the Australian suburb boundaries. I have these as a set of shapefiles that define an enclosed area for each suburb. The suburbs share many points in common and the outline of one areas overlays the outline of the neighbouring suburb(s) as would be expected. It's fairly easy to de-dupe the points that make up the shape, but I'm struggling with the next part I want to do. I'd like to split the areas in to sets of borders between the two adjoining suburbs. While I believe I have an approach, it's looking annoying and complicated. So, does anyone know if there is a 'standard' algorithm for doing this ? thanks -- Franc ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Many programs (like the adress search in my navigator) cannot yet use borders split up into multiple polylines grouped in an ordered relation. Considering that relations are not ordered until api 0.6 is public. (This is what is done for country-borders.) If it's not too many points on the shared polylines I see no problem with sharing just the nodes and having closed polygons for the suburbs as more programs will be able to make use of them.

Hallo!

Hi! From: dgdg o...@fronhausen.com [..]

Map('map',options); var options = { maxExtent: new OpenLayers.
