Fastmail IMAP

2009-07-09 Thread Stuart Cuddy
Hello Tbbeta,

I was looking through FastMail's blog this AM and came across the following.

http://blog.fastmail.fm/2009/05/01/help-test-proxy-to-improve-imap-performance/

So far using this proxy (mentioned lower in the article) I am seeing the
following results.

Raw data 202.6 KB
Compressed data 21.2 KB
Approx 90% savings

Not sure how this translates into real world performance, but it is interesting
none the less.

Also Ritlabs, you may want to look into this and the rest of the article.
Seeing
as you are looking into IMAP now and want to be on the cutting edge. :)

New install, restoring (old) backup, problem with sending mail

2009-07-09 Thread Vili
It is the second case I observed it at a user, it seems to be reproducible:

- v4.0: make a backup
- remove v4.0
- install v4.1 or v4.2
- restore the backup
- send some mails, everything looks ok
- restart TB
- sent mails after the restore are NOT in the Sent mail folder
- compose a mail, try to send it from the mal composing screen immediately
- error: Cannot export mail
- close the mail composing screen (put the letter in the Outbox)
- go to the Main screen. The mail is in the Outbox, so send it from
the main screen. It works, and after it you can even send mails from
the mail composing window, TB is cured.

What bothers me is that users lose mails... It mus be connected
somehow to the new index file, I guess. I will test it further.

Please confirm it.

PS: Is it normal that I made a support ticket into the official
Ritlabs support system (about MAPI) and after 4 days of internal
ping-pong (you do it, no, you do it) still no answer? What is your
experience, if any? I try to help my users immediately or max 1 day.
Am I overzealous?

TBK format in 4.1 and 4.0 is not same, it is needed to restore TBK in older
version and then upgrade to 4.1 or older. You should be prompted about
this.

I dont remember a prompt. Maybe it said something but allowed the restore.

Answers...
as a programmer: come on. Dont allow it then! Dont just use a prompt.

as a distributor: Another thing that should be fixed before delayed
sending, etc. implemented.

Functionality of Synchronise in Maintenance Centre

2009-07-09 Thread ham...@albanach.net
Hello All.
Am I alone in thinking that the Synchronise function does not behave
correctly?
It is my opinion that synchronisation should merge two legitimate
message databases, and produce a legitimate version which will contain
any changes made in both original versions. An example might help!!

I log in to The Bat on my PC in the morning, read messages and reply
to a few. During the day I use Voyager on a memory stick and read any
new messages etc. On the way home during a long train journey I tidy
up the folders deleting some messages. On my return home, the
Synchronise function works - apart from re constituting the messages
that I'd deleted when I tidied the folders.

In database synchronisation the function is based on the time-stamps
of each transaction. Shouldn't it be the same with the Bat.
I deliberately deleted many messages at 3pm, so why were these folders
repopulated with the contents as at 9am.

If I had wanted to recover from a damaged message base, that's what
Backup and Restore are for.

On a very positive note, I'm finding Voyager much more reliable than
previous versions - I no longer need a backup EMail system as I'm
now confident in The Bat/Voyager combination..

Hamish
