Making Outlook the ultimate benchmark for HTML representation is the

TF I agree with that, but it is not a question of the method to render
TF HTML emails, it's a question of the result of rendering them, i.e. as
TF they were meant to be seen.

And there is an Outlook feature I don't like at all, even if someone
on the list asked to imitate this behaviour: Outlook removes images
and I have to reload them one by one. I just prefer TB's way.

TF The user doesn't care about the engine behind it, he cares about
TF the outcome and showing the HTML mail correctly.

That's how it should be for a customer who doesn't want to look behind
the scene and understand how it's working. But such a customer would
not be in this list :-)

TF Outlook usually does that.

The important word is usually. Did you ever see HTML-mail comming from
Lotus Notes displayed in Outlook? Horrible and completely different
from the look inside Notes. The other way around is the same.

TF And if there are clients out there apart from TB! that don't, we
TF should use them as benchmarks.

There are a lot, Lotus Notes as mentioned, ThunderBird (the other TB
*g*), Foxmail, YAMC and they all have their issues and glitches in
displaying HTML.

TF Saying other products are even worse than ours is not a way to
TF satisafy customers.

Full ACK

TF However, Outlook does the job correctly,

That is my point, I doubt that. Outlook displays perfectly if you stay
in the M$ environment. The same is true for Notes if you stay there
and for many other applications. I just wanted to say that even
Outlook is not the Non-Plus-Ultra for any HTML mail.

PVN Do you want TB to use IE to render HTML like so many others?

TF Are we discussing again whether or not TB! should display HTML?

I agree with you that TB should display HTML. But then the HTML code
has to be written following the W3C standards. Many pages that don't
display as they should contain HTML errors.

TF And I want HTML mails to be displayed correctly, no excuses.

Well, I understand the request but: if you order a cocktail in a bar
and you get something that doesn't follow the recipe, who would you
blame, the recipe or the bartender?

I'm pretty sure that there will always be webpages and HTML messages
that don't show up properly as long as there is a large number of
rendering engines. On the other hand, a tolerant rendering has always
the risk of security issues.

TF For me as a user, it is transparent whether they use the IE
TF engine. They chose not to, and that is OK with me.

The problem with rendering is that there are still web programmers who
optimize their code for IE 7 or even IE6. Nearly all actual browsers have
problems displaying such pages. Knowing that it makes sense that
windows asks me during updates for IE8 if I want to install also the
compatibility mode for older IE versions.

I'm not a web programmer but I use XML very often. Looking at the
source code of your example shows an incorrect DOCTYPE statement. So,
perhaps this is the root of the unsatisfying display of the HTML?

TF They reported that they have improved something in this beta
TF version, and I tested and found a problem. Why are you hitting me
TF up for testing a beta version for the apparently fixed problem?

You shouldn't be hit but one of the programmers should explain why
this message doesn't display properly in TB.

TB! and screenreader

2008-01-13 Thread Feli Wilcke
Hi all,

the newer versions of TB are going more and more unusable for people
using screenreaders. Friends told me that the last version with Jaws
and XP is 3.1.33 and with WindowsEyes and XP was 3.99.29. With Vista
there is no chance because graphics, radio buttons and control buttons
are no longer recognised as such.

https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=6657 is the entry in the whish
list and I hope many of you will support this whish.

If graphics in TB stay as they are, we will loose the majority of
screenreader users for Thunderbird (the other TB *g*)

RB There I see them!

then it is the fault of the sending mail program. It didn't
declare the content properly.

RB As charset is mentioned Systemstandard! The Umlaute have been in the

Systemstandard is the charset you use when you send mails. I was speaking of
the
charset of the mail you want to forward. If you select this mail and
press F9, you will see something like
,- [ ]
| Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-15
`-

 Some Umlaute to test: Ä ä Ö ö Ü ü
 Some french characters: é è ê ç à ù î

RB I don't mean a normal message!

What do you mean by normal message?

this is still my question

If you try to forward Hendrik's mail, does it loose the accented
characters?

JF Yes, this is the problem i think, because i use Firefox and the
JF Message mostly happens while the Browser is not already startet.

Here it works with FF, no problems to start it from url in mail

JF Maybe it's possible to tell The_Bat! which browser to use?

AFAIK you cannot tell TB which is the default browser, it uses the
browser set as default for the whole system. Just tell windows to use
FF as default and it should work.

JF I even would change an registry entry, i am able to do this.

I see no need to do this.
