Re: BayesIt or Bayes Filter?

2005-06-08 Thread Foster, Graham
Hello
I have not re-installed it either. So I don't know BayesIt suffers
from the same problem that affected Bayes Filter ... at least earlier
 in the beta series.
I find this thread really interesting, because BayesIT was so buggy in
earlier releases that it drove me (an many others) to the Bayes
Filter.

IMHO, Bayes Filter is FAR faster and more stable than BayesIT ever was
for me. The plugin issue in the last beta series has been resolved in
Bayes Filter 2.0.3 so I am back using this, and these are the
metrics (reset stats after installing 2.0.3 earlier this week):-

HamMails: 18191
SpamMails: 4063
detected Ham: 2087 (99.86%)
detected Spam: 94 (93.62%)
FALSE Ham detected: 6
FALSE Spam detected: 3

.. I think this is pretty good. Can other systems do better?

Why so slow?

2005-06-01 Thread Foster, Graham
Hi TBBETA

So I'm at home on a 2Mb ADSL VPN link, and my file store is at work.
TB has spent the last 45 mins downloading today's mail, which
according to the connections screen was 681k in 234 messages. It
finished transferring the messages pretty quickly, and for the past 40
mins appears to be trickling them into my inbox .. real.. slow..ly I
know that the data has to be downloaded from the server and then
transferred back up the wire to the folder - but 45 mins for 681k is
PAINFUL (now you see why I read TBBETA on gmane most of the time I'm
at home :-)

Any ideas?

Bayes Filter 2.0.2 not re-loading

2005-05-19 Thread Foster, Graham
Hi TBBETA

After a full test of the Bayes Filter 2.0.2 issue I can report that
the problem appears to be related to the Bayes Filter itself, not
remembering its installation. I have tried on 2 separate machines, and
in each case (with TB3.5), the latest 2.02 version fails to be
remembered between TB! restarts. Version 2.01 however seems to work
fine. Achim.. are you listening?

Bayes Filter and 3.5

2005-05-17 Thread Foster, Graham
Hi TBBETA

I probably have a local problem, but the Bayes filter (Achim's one)
has gone crazy and is classifying almost all TBBETA messages as spam.
I've reclassified them as Not junk - but it still persists. Any
suggestions?
(To be fair - it is trapping real spam too, but it just seems to have
gone crazy on TBBETA messages)

Re: Bayes Filter and 3.5

2005-05-17 Thread Foster, Graham
Found the (likely) problem...

(My instance of) TB Release version 3.5 is not remembering the Bayes
plugin. I checked and TB was configured to use the OLD (v2) plugin.
I un-installed this plugin, and re-referenced the latest version
(2.02 in a different directory). I closed TB, and re-opened - the old
(v2.0.0) was still referenced. I repeated the re-configuration, but
this time completely deleted the old folder with 2.0.0 in it. I
restarted TB! and now TB! had NO anti-spam plugin. I reconfigured
(yet again), restarted TB and once again, no anti-spam plugin was
 loaded.

How can I convince TB that the Bayes filter is installed in the TB!
 program folder??

Re: Next Beta Series Request

2005-05-16 Thread Foster, Graham
Hello Peter
I also think it might interesting for Ritlabs from a business POW.
I don't believe any organisation with an installed Outlook client base
and Exchange server would ever look at The Bat! as an enterprise
e-mail client. Where is the track record? Where is the support model?

The Bat is a niche market product for those people who want an e-mail
client to do more (in some areas). If Ritlabs want to produce an
Outlook replacement for their clients, then I would wholeheartedly
support this, as I too have to run Outlook and TB in parallel. Ritlabs
however should not embark on this with the idea they will make money
on it - 'cause they wont.

Hello 9Val
But nobody (except you and Marek) could reproduce it or find the

Well I can still reproduce it in RC9 too. Only other fact I noticed
is that I'm actually moving a folder tree (i.e. parent + 1 child
folder) which causes the cascade of AV's. I don't know if that makes a
difference?

within message creation
0002464 21 Apr 2005 easy scheduled e-mail send
0003320 06 Aug 2004 Add a Has Memo flag with drill down
0003004 24 Apr 2005 Selectable background for quotes

0002311 21 Apr 2005 Address Autoview feature needs an overhaul
0002310 21 Apr 2005 Address lookup from LDAP
0004007 01 Nov 2004 Add newline as an address delimiter
0003758 17 Oct 2004 Missing add address book group

Re: Bug(?): time designation of received mails wrong

2005-05-12 Thread Foster, Graham
Hello Peter

Is the culprit the FILETIME=[2743DE40:01C556D1]? Why?
No
The culprit is in the Date: field which is incorrectly formatted as
Date: Thu May 12 11:01:14 CEST 2005
when it needs to be like
Date: Thu, 12 May 2005 12:27:33 +0200

i.e. TB looks for GMT offsets, (and probably the , after the date)

TB is VERY fussy about the format of its date fields, and I regularly
get Created dates years in advance (or behind) of the current date.
Its a known feature of TB date handling.

2005-05-12 Thread Foster, Graham
Hi TBBETA

I pressed Control Shift Left arrow on my TBBeta folder (thinking it
was re-read last message.. which it isn't).

The subsequent Move Folder into being a common folder (and then
trying to move even higher in the hierarchy) caused an AV cascade.
 (On restart no info lost)

Its reproducible for me. Anyone else reproduce?

Re: Cascade of AV's in RC8

2005-05-12 Thread Foster, Graham
Hello Graham
Its reproducible for me. Anyone else reproduce?
.. I have more detail. The accidental keypress resulted in my regular
TBBETA folder becoming a child of a virtual folder. I guess this is
understandable as to why it caused a problem. Perhaps the Move Folder
functionality should check for this an not allow it to occur??

Re: A LDAP question

2005-05-10 Thread Foster, Graham
Hello Tero
I asked this question around version 2.0 or something and was told that
time that TB! is only able to perform searches against a LDAP directory,
 not adding entries to it.

Perhaps some from the devel team can confirm this?
I'm not a developer - but I can confirm this. Many years ago Stefan
was getting into an awful hole trying to do implement what you were
asking. Many of us said searching is fine because for most LDAP
servers, users do not have access rights to add entries anyway. (can
you imagine what an international corporation's directory would look
like if all employees had the rights to add their personal address
book into the (globally searchable) directory)

Hi TBBETA

Any idea how I use an address book group in a filter such that the
sender or ANY recipient in a designated address book causes a match.
The available options appear to be first recipent, or ALL recipients.

Re: RC2 - Search AVs Gone, Print from Continue

2005-05-05 Thread Foster, Graham
Hello MAU
The two cascading AVs when entering search have disappeared with RC2.
Agreed

However, I am still getting an AV if I tray to print a message found
 via search.
Not confirmed here...

And I just got the attached AV when exiting Search :(

I just logged that exact same thing in Bugtrack
https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4568
I got it only when exiting search via the red X (terminate) button and
not close. Does this tally with your experience?

Problems with Message finder

Hi TBBETA

I have a whole series of issues with message finder, primarily the
weird GUI interaction, lack of search feedback (unless messages are

100% CPU usage in beta 19 20

2005-04-28 Thread Foster, Graham
Hi TBBETA

Earlier in the week I raised the issue of lumpy TB! performance.
using this new .20 beta the problem is more reproducible. The issue
arises when Connection Centre fails (i.e. in my case it was with the
recent 4 messages from MAU). I don't know why it fails, it just does
on a random basis. The Connection centre hung - eating up 100% CPU.
TB! etc was still responsive - (but slowly). The CC abort and delete
task buttons were completely useless and did absolutely nothing at
all, yet task manager confirmed TB! as the culprit.

Killing TB restored normal operation, and when restarted TB! behaves
normally. (presumably until the next connection failure)

I'm using POP3 connectivity to an Exchange server on a hardwired LAN.

I think we have some core comms issues in these builds which we
haven't pinned down yet. Anyone else got an opinion?

Hello Graham
Earlier in the week I raised the issue of lumpy TB! performance.

.. I know I'm talking to myself - but the problem appears to be if you
hit SEND (immediate) message whilst the connection centre is already
doing is scheduled send/receive (combined in my case). This causes
things to hang-up here, requiring a TB! restart to get CPU usage down
from 100%

Lumpy performance with .19

Hi TBBETA

I've been experiencing very lumpy performance since installing v19.
Even when TB! is the only task running, I can get periods when the

Any one else experiencing these problems.. or is it me specific

Re: Empty message list after Alt+0

2005-04-21 Thread Foster, Graham
Hello 9Val
No. Open folder properties, there is a combo box 'Column setup'.
Besides using ViewMode there are possibility to use parent folder view
mode, account default settings, folder own settings. Which column
setup is by default in your folder when no view mode selected.
I had the same empty display with ALT-0. When I followed these
instructions the folder properties were set to Folder own settings.
I switched them to use account default, and ALT-0 then gave me a
sensible view. I switched the folder properties BACK to folder own
settings and ALT-0 still worked.

It even worked it other folders I had had the ALT-0 problem with.

I hope that helps

Does Search work in 15?

2005-04-14 Thread Foster, Graham
Hi TBBETA

15 looks a risky build - can anyone tell me if the Search facility is
fixed in 15 (i.e. you can select folders using the right click options,
the search account actually tries to find stuff, no AV's on trying
to search etc etc. Without search I'm seriously considering going back
to the last release version!

Message re-threading

2005-04-07 Thread Foster, Graham
Hi TBBETA

I've asked this question before, about how to re-thread messages. The
answer was drag'n drop, however TB! doesn't seem to work at all
unless you are in Thread by References mode. Why not? Why can't I
create force threading in any other mode?

Re: 3.0.9.13 interface problem

2005-04-06 Thread Foster, Graham
Hello Peter
See attachment. First seen in 3.0.9.12, now also in 3.0.9.13 when
changing from Thread by reference (Alt+1) to No threading (Alt-0) in the
 View folder window.
I also found it in .11 and reported it there. It seems to be related
to changes on the No view mode vs the generic view mode. 9Val (I
believe) removed one, and this is what causes the confusion. If you go
into the column setup mode, reset the mode to have what you want -
this problem goes away. (It did for me at least).

OT: Scheduled e-mails

2005-02-14 Thread Foster, Graham
Hi TBBETA

Long long ago I proposed how TB! could be modified to allow easy to
use scheduling of e-mail sending (using the parked flag and received
date to indicate when a message should be sent). My request was
eventually subverted into the Scheduler (which is almost impossible to
use). For those of you who want a simple send in the future
capability, have a look at the following free service which I've just
been made aware of:- http://futuremail.bensinclair.com/home/index

What is the issue here?

2005-02-11 Thread Foster, Graham
Hi TBBETA
I attach 2 small text files (Documentum links)
User Guide.drl arrived in TB, and double clicking on the link said I
couldn't access the file. Saving it my desktop and double clicking -
said I couldn't access the referenced file

User Guide2.drl was THE SAME e-mail message viewed from Outlook.
Doubling linking on this link - opened the Documentum file. Saving the
DRL to the desktop gave me a shortcut which I could use to get to the
file.

I know I'm old - but I can see no difference in these two files or
their contents. Anyone got an idea what the issue might be - and why
there is a difference in action here?

Re: Bayes Filter 2.0.1 - DNS Blacklist

2005-01-12 Thread Foster, Graham
Hello Achim

Can you explain how / if Automatic DNS blacklisting / training works.
As I see it blacklist entries in the locally held files need to be
aged so that entries are removed, so that addresses which were
falsely blacklisted will eventually be removed and be retried. How
does your program do this? (Simply on the size of the file??)

Dierk Ethan seem to have a problem about being blacklisted too :-(
Otherwise this version seems fine.

I guess I need to start using Blacklistgs and Whitelists. How about a
macro that adds to whitelist / blacklist. I'm not sure I trust the
autoadd facility. Would it undo a blacklist addition if a message
was subsequently found to be incorrectly classified, or would I have
to keep track manually??

Re: BayesFilter 201: Much more aggressive?

2005-01-10 Thread Foster, Graham
Hello Dierk

To relieve oneself from too much false positives is to increase the
number of hits for classifying as spam from the default 2; I use 8
since 4 was still too low.
As the default install only comes with 8 blacklist sites, and the
message in the UI says is DNS count ABOVE n, then by increasing it
to 8 are you really just disabling the blacklisting? (or have you
added more sites?)

Hello Francis
FG a) The version number still reads 2.0.0?
On mine, the version number is 2.0.1 after automatuc update (The Bat!
 must be closed)

I can't use the automatic update function as I'm behind a firewall,
and the plugin upgrade program cannot handle that. I re-downloaded and
re-installed this am (after all these successful reports) and it is
now fine. The reported signature macro problem was entirely due to my
inability to spell SPAMFILTERVERSION sigh

Feature Request - Collapse Quotes

2004-12-17 Thread Foster, Graham
Hello tbbeta

Another really neat extension has been introduced for TB - no - not this on -
the other one (Thunderbird)
http://quotecollapse.mozdev.org/
 - it allows you to selectively collapse quotes from display in messages.
Really neat!

http://quotecolors.mozdev.org/ also provides better highlighting of quotes -
I've already added this as a feature request for the Bat
https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=3004

Any chance either of these will make it into this beta series???

Re: Problems at shuwdown with 3.0.2.8

2004-11-26 Thread Foster, Graham
Hello Robert

When shutting down TheBat I get the (in)famous dialog that says that One or
more connections is still active. Shutdown anyway ?. No matter which
button I choose (Yes, No, Cancel) TheBat refuses to shutdown. The only
thing that works is to kill it from the Taskmanager.

I haven't seen this in a long time. Looks like an old bug that has
 returned.
I've had the same experience even with POP3. Problem occurs if a connection is
lost unexpectedly (i.e. Wifi connection drops offline in my case) TB! error
handling just can't cope with the unexpected loss.

Re: To, CC, BCC Fields

2004-11-05 Thread Foster, Graham
Hello MAU

This is a long standing issue but, on the other hand, there is an
alternative that many people forget about.

No we don't - but this mechanism is also flawed in that:-
- You cannot paste addresses separated with newlines
- you cannot move /copy LDAP searched for entries into you personal address book
- you cannot get rid of the Foster, Graham [EMAIL PROTECTED], if you just want to
view just short addresses
- you cannot search across multiple address books at the same time
- you cannot view the full properties of any address in a page/form view

As you can see - I view addressing to be awful in TB - and (sorry to say this) Outlook
does a much more intelligent job most of the time.

I don't have a problem.. I was just surprised that it worked, especially with embedded

How come normal rtf e-mail from outlook (with all the fonts / images etc) doesn't work

Hello

I don't believe that The Bat supports delete from server if you use a
common folder. It loses track of the account that it came from so it
doesn't know which account it should delete from. If you use a folder

Re: Manual filter no longer works?

2004-10-19 Thread Foster, Graham
Hello Marck

I've figured out what the problem is... Previously use of the hotkey
caused the display to be updated with the new colour group - and I
could SEE it was actioned (part of the reason for the colour group).
In this beta though, the display is NOT updated. Moving off the folder
and back to the folder shows that the filter did indeed work, and the
message was marked as deleted.

Re: The Bat! 3.0.1 Beta cycle finished

2004-10-14 Thread Foster, Graham

And thank you for your message Stefan, it is appreciated :)
and seconded here

   - Customisable toolbars (and possibly menus)

My preferred one from your list. But I'd happily give it up in exchange
 for Manual Re-Threading. :)

Sadly my preferences don't make it to this beta cycle. I'd like a
roots branch reworking of addressing to make it simpler to use,
improve LDAP based address books (introducing automatic lookup) and
easier to manage long lists of addressees (automatic address group
creation from recipient lists, automatic address group creation in
filters, address autoview linked to LDAP ... etc etc)

Looks like this will be 2005 at the earliest...:(

Re: TB performance

2004-09-28 Thread Foster, Graham
Hello Peter

Have you made sure that you do not have 30.000 bat*.tmp files in your
 temp directory?
Nope - I often (but not always) use a RAMDRIVE for the TEMP directory
anyway. Saves messing about with remembering to delete stuff. It also
improves performance hugely for many types of application. (edit
/compile / build cycles for example)

I must admit to NOT noticing any huge improvement with TB and a

 Well, it's a quite different task - you're asking to create a
linear sheet constructed from all parts including attached messages.
It should be moved to TB! wishes because it's not a bug at all..
That is why I logged it under a different number. Max said it was
related to fix he was doing, and put in the relationship. I agree that
it is probably a new feature - as it is in Thunderbird (inline
attachments option)

Could you leave it in and just break the relationship with the fixed

Re: TB to run off a USB flash drive

Hello Bernd

The question is, why does TheBat still use registry-settings? Without
this and using relative pathes in every part of the program it would
 be no problem...
Obviously I agree with this - and it would make backup / restore far
simpler too, However, it seems that unless someone logs something in
BugTracker, these suggestions could get lost. If you support the
request (and I assume you do), then please endorse / second the
request.

I do wish you would stop moving stuff about in terms of
