Attachments aren't removed from 'attach' folder

2002-10-17 Thread Salvador Esque

Dear Bat users,

From my account properties panel I chose to keep the file attachments of
my incoming and outgoing emails in a separate folder
(\MAIL\Account\Attach). What I've found out later is that when I delete an
email (from my Inbox, Send Mail or any other folder), its associated
attachment stored in 'Attach' folder still remains there instead of being
removed automatically together with the message.

I've tried to use different combinations of configurations in folder and
account properties as: Empty trash folder on exit, Compress all folders on
exit, Delete attached files when the message is deleted from Trash but
I did not succeed.

Does this lack of coordination, between messages and their attachments
stored in separate folders, has a solution ? I'm using Bat 1.61

Re: Problem sharing a mailbox

2002-10-17 Thread Roelof Otten

Hallo David,

On Thu, 17 Oct 2002 01:26:02 +0200GMT (17-10-02, 1:25 +0200GMT, where
I live), you wrote:

DC Here's the situation: I have a group of 4 people (a small company) who
DC share a common address with the same username. I can't create aliases
DC on the server, and the solution of forwarding all the mails from the
DC main account to their personal ones isn't a possibility. TB! is
DC configured to leave the messages on the server for 2 weeks so they all
DC get the same e-mails, regardless of what each person does in its own
DC inbox.

A few questions.
Is everyone of them using TB? And if so, do all copies of TB show the
same behaviour? In the latter case you could try to ask the ISP about
changes in the server.

Does TB every time download all messages, or did it only once and
afterwards only when you killed the dupes. That might point to a
change on the server side.

A solution for the current situation would be to let the four of them
download their mail with the last of them to delete it immediately on
the server. Unless their flow is real high, this action shouldn't
cause more than one or two messages not to be distributed to the four
of them (but only to the last).

Since you've been working this way for months, the idea behind it is
sound. However with a real high flow the storage on the server or the
buffer that TB uses might overrun and cause something like this.

Possible solutions:
1) Kill messages after a week
2) If your four are on a LAN and use TB, you could configure one copy
of TB as server to collect and send the mail. Look at the TB help
file for: The Bat! Networking Course to get more info on this
subject. Now TB can delete mail on the server.
3) Install a real server on your LAN, this enables everyone to mail
among themselves and with my server (I'm using Mailtraq) it's easy
to distribute the mail to all four of them. Or if you'd like to
spread the workload, to send every message only to one of them.
And I expect the same functionality in other servers like Mercury
or MDaemon.

In my message I presumed four copies of TB, I'm not sure whether
that's correct, but you didn't give lots of info. ;-)

To do more possible error hunting:

1) Four copies of the same version of TB?
2) Do all copies experience the same problem?
3) Do other mua's have the same problem?
4) How often did the problem occur (without killing dupes, that only
repeats the whole problem): once, once a month, once a half year,
once per 65536 messages.
5) Was their a setup/version change before TB started to behave
erroneously? (This includes other software, OS, hardware, ISP,
internet connection)
6) Did something else change with the computers or the people that use
them? (One of them taking the kids to office could prove
disastrous. g)

Do you need to recognize the fact that an e-mail is written in Arabic
or do you need to view the message in an Arabic character set?

In the first case, you could filter on a string that mentions the
correct charset in the kludges. In the latter case you'd need an
Arabic font and I'm not sure whether they are fixed width like TB
needs.

That doesn't actually work very good. I do already own a big screen

folders (correctly so) doesn't show completely without moving other

I was just Eicar test virus testing, when.....

2002-10-17 Thread Chris Weaven
 I think I found a weakness in NOD32 pop3 scanning.

At the moment, I'm running pop3 scanning and AVG with the plug-in.

I thought I'd give this little set-up a test run. So;

1. I sent the test file as a notepad attachment using another of my
e-mail address through e-mailanywhere.com directly to my address. I
saved this sent message.

Not a problem, pop3 and AVG picked up the files.

2. I then went in and forwarded the message using the e-mailanywhere. I
needed to re-attach the file and again sent it to my address.

This time pop3 missed it and AVG with the plug-in caught it! On checking
the log in pop3, it appears it only checked the message text in the
forwarded message and not the attached file aswell!

Why would this happen? Has anyone else experienced this? Have I got
something wrong in the set-up?

Open to suggestions, as very confused!

Cheers,

Chris Weaven

It seems highly unlikely to me that any virus scanner should react on
the name of an attachment.

However it seems even more unlikely to me that somebody in his right
mind should send you an attachment called 'norton antivirus', unless
the sender is somebody who often sends you illegal copies of software
without prior notice.

So it's probably a hoax or a virus and as norton triggers on it, it's
likely to be a virus. That's my 2 cts.

oh perhaps i didn't make myself clear. when norton finds a virus

Due to a bug in filtering mime headers (apparently can't do it), this
apparently cannot be done in a direct manner. The best that I could do
is this, which seems to catch both BugBear and Klez:

BeginFilter

JN Confidence restored. It would be nice, though, if there were some

JN If I didn't already know it was due to the presence of a virus, I
JN wouldn't find out from trying to open the file.

To go one step further, it would be a nice touch if scanners did check
compressed files also.

Would be a bummer if you forwarded it to someone, without even opening
it, who hasn't got a virus scanner, and wam, payload dropped on their
machine!

Mind you, everyone should have a virus scanner!

Can you believe, on my old PC, I didn't run a virus scanner for atleast
a year! Wouldn't go a day now!

Chris.

SM I have this:
SM 07/09/2002 05:53 pm 4,689,408 thebat.exe

I'm running version 1.61 personal. My 7.09.02 file is also 17.53 but
the size is different. 4,580 KB

Will I have to re-install The Bat! ? Can I just delete one of the
 exe's safely?

You don't have to touch either executable files. The first file is the
self extracting setup program, while the second is the actual
application. This won't cause you any problems :)

OK, now I am interested. I have just done some playing around with the
files myself out of interest and what you say above does not seem to
be true, at least for me.

Amon *let* me unzip both zipped files without warning me BUT when I
attempted to open the unzipped files, it then gave me a warning as I
would have expected. I am curious about your statement above - were
you assuming that, or is that what happens for you?

I am not using the plugin by the way, not that that should make any
difference.

Beta 2-5 has been out since late august/early september. At least
some of them has been discussed on TBBETA.

I think the joke was missed by a couple of people... No major version
number was quoted, so was read as v6 of TB! was in Beta testing ;P I
guess my unusual sense of humour is lost on most ;)

Chris,

This may be a terminology thing, but the NOD32 scanner does check
compressed archive files. The AMON real-time monitor apparently does
not, but it *does* check when an infected file is extracted from a
compressed archive file. So, it does seem as though all doors are
being guarded, although by different sentries in different ways.

Some do... some don't. Some companies don't deem it necessary to waste
system resources reading the contents of an archive when they really
only need to do it when the contents are executed/extracted. The mail
server scanning software I run scans all kinds of archives from the
standard zip to sit (Mac Stuff-it files) and unix tar and gzip files.
