Hello Mike,

On Saturday, July 19, 2003 at 8:29:30 PM you [MS] wrote (at least in
part):

MS The Bat handles the .eml files with no problem... the
MS attachments are intact and properly
MS displayed in the attachment bar, and can be opened with no troubles. But with the
.msg
MS files, the attachments are not shown in the side-bar, and instead become huge
masses of
MS gibberish code.

IIRC the '.MSG' files Lookout produces are not 'plain text' files as
OE's .EML and The Bat!'s .MSG files are.
Open one of the related .MSG files in a text editor of your choice
(Notepad, GViM, UltraEdit, whatever; just make sure it's nothing like
Word, write or similar) and have a look if you see only plain text
or similar garbage as The Bat! makes of it. In the latter case
you've found the culprit: Lookout produces non-usable (at least not
outside Lookout) message files.

Mike,

I'm new to TB myself so please don't take what I suggest as Gospel:
Have you tried importing the *.msg files?

From your description it sounds like you're trying to open them
directly in TB. If I misunderstood, then ignore this. If I'm right,
a low-risk test would be to try to import them into a new folder in TB
and see the effect.

Just a thought.

RA (I am not looking for trouble or advertizing Eudora, in fact I don't
RA even like it that much which is why I'm considering TB. I am just
RA reporting the facts as I see them).
There are a few compliance issues with TB. In my case, it was necessary to
use alternate port TLS for SMTP. This was because my dial-up ISP blocks
port 25, so I couldn't connect to my own mail server. TB didn't read the
server's certificate correctly, but Eudora and most other mail clients do
fine with it.

I've used TB for years and prefer it over Eudora and the MS products.
Hopefully these issues get resolved in future TB versions. But for now, at
least in my case, I usually read my mail on TB, then, in the case of
replies, paste it over on Eudora to send.

Maybe you'll come up with a better resolution to your problem than I have.
TB is a very fine product with just a few rough edges.

Be well,
Ben

As I have no problems opening .msg files with TB, with or without
attachments, I would think these files themselves are corrupted.

Open one of these files (one without attachment, for example) and open
it in a text editor. You should see all the headers (Starting with
From:), and then there should be one blank line, and then there should
be the text of the message.

Nope, no luck. If I change a .msg file to .txt and open it that way, there's no
from:/to:
header, just a bunch of coding, then the message text.

I take it from this footer on your message that you're running a 1.63 beta version of
The
Bat? I've got version 1.62r running on Windows98... the .msg files are from Outlook
2000
SP-3. Should I try the beta version and see if it fixes the problem? Where can I get
it,
and is it at least halfway reliable, or is it full of bugs?

Thanks,
Mike

No, that won't do any good. TB expects .msg files to be plain text
(including the headers) and Outlook apparently doesn't create those.

Then you have proven it: they are not .msg files, but Outlook abuses
the the file extension for something proprietary. Marck already said
as much.

No - there is nothing to fix in TB. You should try and ask the makers
of Outlook to fix it their end.

Where can I get it, and is it at least halfway reliable, or is it
 full of bugs?

The current beta is full of bugs. It is work-in-progress, you see.
That's why they call it beta. But that has nothing to do with
opening of .msg files; TB has always done that correctly. ;-)

Would someone be willing to speak wit me via phone?

2003-07-20 Thread Steve M. Sawczyn
Hello all,

I am still having difficulty figuring out what the bat, or how the bat
is threading messages. I think part of this has to do with the fact
that I'm not able to read the icons telling me if I'm in a thread,
subthread, etc... I'm wondering if there's someone out there who
might be willing to spend a few minutes with me going over some of
these and other aspects via phone? I'm willing to call abroad,
especially as I see many on this list are from Germany and other
countries.

Please reply privately if you wouldbe willing to help. THanks in
advance,

Steve
