Have you copied across the registry entries? Have a search through the
archives as it has certainly been covered before.

If you have already done that, then I don't know what the problem would
be except that user accounts in XP can't do a lot of things you might

Hi Tony,

I did answer YES.
The TBB files (unencrypted) are in
c:\documents and settings\administrator\application data\the
bat!\username\inbox\messages.tbb and various dirs below..

I read through the message.tbb with say Notepad..

I backed up my old The Bat!, uninstalled. Deleted the above dir AND
c:\programme files\the bat! (after also saying delete the dirs in the
uninstall)
Then installed the new version thebat_pro_3-5-25.msi and then (during the
install) restored my backup.

Low and behold after restoring my backup all the files in c:\documents and
settings\etc were in
.tbb plain text format

I am doing a copy-and-paste of something I sent earlier to this
thread. Please notice the advice about changing the value 0 to the
value 1 in the registry key. This might apply here, as it was
necessary when we were testing this just before the release of version
3.5. It's in the last paragraph of the quote from a post on the
mailing list TBBETA (The Bat! Beta):

This from a post on TBBETA is probably relevant:
mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

by Martin Sebald, May 19, 2005, with Subject line,
Re: No On-The-Fly Pwd installation ?
Begin Copy-and-Paste==

after I also migrated to encryption I wanted to make sure that
everybody knows that without the registry settings from before
encryption (you are starting with a clean registry because of the
whole uninstall/install process) there is much you have to setup again
by hand. I solved this by saving HKCU\Software\RIT and completly
importing it after the migration. I just shutdown TB right after
restoring accounts/mails/addressbooks etc and imported the registry
key.

Very important is that you change one key after importing the original
registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!\EncryptedLayerMode

This key is set to 0 when no encryption is active and has to be set to
1 when encryption is active. So be sure you change that by hand before
starting TB the first time after importing you old settings.
==End Copy-and-Paste

These were instructions posted to help people who had originally
installed the Professional Edition of The Bat! but said No to
On-the-Fly-Encryption when it was offered during the installation.

If they wished to change that decision, they could not simply install
a later edition of TB! Professional-OTFE. The option would not be
offered.

Instead, a clean install plus removal of the registry key, and then a
subsequent following of the above instructions is necessary.

I am running the Professional Edition, but I chose not to have
On-The-Fly-Encryption, and so far still do not want it.

But I saved the above instructions in my Troubleshooting Folder, in
case I ever do. (BTW, Martin Sebald was running 3.5 when he posted the
advice that I've quoted above. And many thanks to him, if he sees this
post of mine. )

I wrote this in reply to the message in which Roelof Otten told you

Sorry if you missed seeing it. I probably should have sent the
information in Reply to one of your posts to TBUDL, Tim, as I am now

Master Password

2005-06-07 Thread Tim Bicknelle
Hi All,

Well 3.5.26 fixed the OTFE issue. Amazing how quick they fixed it too. Nice one
TB programmers !

When I install 3.5.26 it asks for a master password and an OTFE password -
which I presume is used
to encrypt the database.
When I then close and re-open TB it asks for the master password, which when
entered let's me into
TB.
Out of interest any idea where I change this new master PW as the old CTRL+F12
doesn't do it.
Also previously when I closed my default Account (tree) by clicking on it, no
email would be
sent and received and when I open the default account (tree) I was asked for
the password.
This was useful if I was say going out and picking up email from my PDA or Web
Mail, but didn't
necessarily want to close TB.

Is he never happy they all shout ;)

Cheers,
Tim

Moving the Bat! data files to another computer

I have my system set up so that TB! goes into D:\program files, but I

Years ago, when I moved to my last new machine I managed to pull it
off, this time I can't get TB! to automatically recognize the
transferred settings. What am I missing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A backup and restore usually works fine.

If that doesn't work, transfer your whole mail directory to the new

reflect your data's new location. Import this key on the new computer.
