Well, I'd prefer not to leave spam in the inbox.

Of course not.

Lets take it step by step.

1. You receive new mail - all mail first goes to the inbox, and it is
processed by all incoming filters. Filters are executed from top to bottom,
as they are shown in the sorting office.

2. Your first filter is good mail (you could also call it a whitelist).
It checks if the TO field really contains Your Name [EMAIL PROTECTED] -
if so, it moves the message to the folder PayPal, or whatever...

3. The next filter is the spam filter (blacklist). It checks if the TO
field does NOT contain the good string, and if doesn't, the message is
moved to the Junk folder.

TB + IMAP Server

2006-01-25 Thread Michael Wagner
Hi folks,

I am using TB 3.65.03 and having massive problems:

- I have often but not surely reproducable access violations in TB

- Sometimes (about once per day) TB hangs and must be sut down via te task
manager. But worst: It leaves some connections on the mail server so that I
have to restart that too in order to work again. (I am shure there is a timeout
when the lost connection gets freed, but I dont have that kind of time to wait)

- I get crashes nearly reproducable when TB syncs with the IMAP server and I
try to read/move newly recieved mails

- The mail counting gets on my nerve: I am reading a couple of newsgroups and
have some filters for this directly on the mail server. Every time I want to
check my inbox for new mail, TB gets the status of ALL folders within my
account.
How can I disable this? I would like to configure which folders should be
checked when clicking on the recieve mail button and which should only be
checked when I switch into that folder.

I really like TB but these things keep me away from working so I need a
solution ...

Thanks in advance

Though I'm using a beta, I do recall using the version you're using and
my problems then, weren't massive. For IMAP, this isn't at all unusual.
User experience seems to vary quite widely and this is likely secondary
to the differences with IMAP server and additionally, how TB! is
configured. As a result of this, some of my comments may well be of no
direct use, but it may add some perspective to the frustrations involved
in trying to use TB! for IMAP. It's largely a luck of the draw, it would
seem.

I use the FastMail service for e-mail. TB! seems to work pretty well
with it.

 - I have often but not surely reproducable access violations in TB

For some time now AV's have been exceedingly rare for me. OTOH, in the
not so recent past, AV's were a frequent part of IMAP use. Too frequent.

 - Sometimes (about once per day) TB hangs and must be sut down via te
task manager. But worst: It leaves some connections on the mail server
so that I have to restart that too in order to work again. (I am shure
there is a timeout when the lost connection gets freed, but I dont
have that kind of time to wait)

I have no problems like that. However, just to make a point, I used
Mulberry almost exclusively during a time when I found TB! IMAP
unworkable. During the time, Mulberry would crash on sending mail. There
was a specific trigger and it drove me nuts trying to fix it since
others couldn't duplicate it. Turned out to be a setting on the server.

IOW's, don't under-estimate the influence of the server in how things
run. If you're running your own server, you could fiddle where that's
concerned. However, TB! IMAP is unreliable and it's difficult to say who
is to blame whenever there's a problem. I'd fiddle anyway, since your
problems seem particularly crippling and that's unusual, even for TB!.

 - I get crashes nearly reproducable when TB syncs with the IMAP
server and I try to read/move newly recieved mails

Not here.

 - The mail counting gets on my nerve: I am reading a couple of
newsgroups and have some filters for this directly on the mail server.
Every time I want to check my inbox for new mail, TB gets the status
of ALL folders within my account. How can I disable this? I would like
to configure which folders should be checked when clicking on the
recieve mail button and which should only be checked when I switch
 into that folder.

I'm afraid this can't be disabled. This is one of the reasons TB! needs
more bandwidth than the other clients. It tends to use bandwidth to run
those checks that you can't disable. You could try disabling the
periodic folder updating found in the IMAP fine tune settings.

On the TB! side, I recommend the following to get the most hassle-free,
as possible IMAP experience. If you're still having problems despite
this, then I'd look into the server settings. If there's still no joy,
I'd join TBBETA and let RIT know about your problems, giving them
details about your server setup. One can only then hope that they'll
look into it.

- set all folders to not synchronise with the server. Folder counts will
still be done, as configured in the IMAP fine-tune settings.

- do not use a server side Outbox. Keep your Outbox local. Too many
problems there.

- Here's a capture of my fine-tune settings for you to look at
http://www.aimlink.name/pics/finetune.png

- avoid nesting and un-nesting folders. You're doing some complicated
shifting of folders on the server when you do this. TB! seems to mess up
for many when they try it. I don't since I'm not feeling lucky!

I really like TB but these things keep me away from working so I need
 a solution ...

I can imagine. Many IMAP users have stopped using TB! as their main
client. I don't use TB! at work. It's just not suited to the type of
connection I have to deal with at work. However, at home, it's usable
and dare I say, reliably so.

When a program is shut down (no matter in what manner), all it's filehandles

about a minute to figure this out sometimes (since the connection wasn't
terminated with a QUIT message).

Thats not an alias. Those are just realnames. :-)

Aliases are different mail addresses within a domain that lead to one and
the same mail account. You could also call them redirections.

For example, you could have [EMAIL PROTECTED] and
[EMAIL PROTECTED] both end in the same mail account which
has the real address [EMAIL PROTECTED]. You're collecting
three mail addresses in one mail account that way but can still keep them
apart according to the TO address.

You may use X-Ray Mail Assistant, to give it parameters of Gmail's SMTP
server, while to TB you'd give just localhost instructions instead.
Thus, TB will send to X-Ray (locally) first, and X-Ray will then send

Send mails as attachments

2006-01-25 Thread Philippe Macaire
Hi all,

it is sometimes useful to attach a received mail (as an eml file) to a
new mail.

Usually I save the received mail on disk (Save As...) then drag and
drop the file on the new mail. I then have to delete the file from the
disk.

Sometimes I also invoke the Alternative Forward menu on the received
mail (which creates a new mail with the other one in a file 1.eml),
then go into the Outbox to be able to drag and drop the attachment
1.eml to a new mail. I then have to delete the alternative forward
mail from the Outbox.

Do you know of a better approach to do this? I'd like to be able to
drag and drop a mail directly from the message list into the new mail,
for instance.

As far as I can see, you still haven't set TB to authenticate to the
server. I'll show you how TB's smtp log looks like with authentication:

[00:30:47] S: 250-otten.tv
[00:30:47] S: 250-AUTH LOGIN CRAM-MD5
[00:30:47] S: 250 AUTH=LOGIN

[00:30:47] C: more blabla
[00:30:47] S: 235 OK authenticated
[00:30:47] C: MAIL FROM:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Basically this means that TB is skipping the authentication process at
your place.
Just to make sure that you've configured that correctly:
  Account - Properties - Transport
Here you see two buttons with 'Authentication'
The one on the top belongs to your smtp server.
Press this one.
The topmost option says:
Perform SMTP authentication (RFC2554)
check this option
It has a sub-option: Same user/password setting as for mail retrieval
That should be selected too.
The rest should not be selected.

As you're using the same version as I do, you should get similar
results.

when I took a look at what you said about checking box for

Specific Settings. I manually typed in the first part before the @
then typed in a password with THAT email prefix, not what I use for

OK, back to regular work. Thanks for the lessons everyone.

Re: Relay personality in Thebat

2006-01-25 Thread Pranav Lal

Hi Alexander and all,
snip Erm... what is a relay personality?
PL] It is a feature of Eudora that allows you to send an email using
a different account. Quoting from Eudora's help,

The Internet Service Provider (ISP) with whom you have your
primary email account may not allow you to send messages
through any other Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server
but their own. If you have accounts at other ISPs or third-party
email services, you may not be able to send mail from those
accounts unless you use your primary ISP's SMTP servers. The
SMTP relay feature allows you to send all your mail through your
primary ISP's server.

A personality is just a term for another account. For example, My
email address is

[EMAIL PROTECTED]
However, mydomain.com does not allow me to send email unless I am
directly connected to the ISP. So I have a gmail account and setup
that account in Eudora. Then, I set [EMAIL PROTECTED] to send email
through that account.

mail (which creates a new mail with the other one in a file 1.eml),
then go into the Outbox to be able to drag and drop the attachment
1.eml to a new mail. I then have to delete the alternative forward
 mail from the Outbox.

Do you know of a better approach to do this? I'd like to be able to
drag and drop a mail directly from the message list into the new mail,
 for instance.

Try selecting a e-mail and just drag-n-drop it to the e-mail you are
editing, works for me.

Or maybe I misunderstood your question? ;)
