composing email with japanese characters in utf-8 w/ microed seems to fail

Hello, all. Coming back to a newer version of bat (3.71.03), and seeing if I may have missed something before filing a bug. I'm composing an email with japanese characters. Options->character set is set to unicode (utf-8). I can create the characters, but the words are left as ??? in the body. I
