I had exactly the same experience with Gmail. I tried all combinations of
STARTTLS and TLS, port 465 and 587. It simply refused to send mail. Very
 frustrating.

Some weeks later, however, I tried again and it worked the first time. My
guess is that once it gets set wrong, something (in The Bat or Gmail?)
 doesn't get reset.

Try deleting the account and starting with a new one. The settings Roelof

SSL SMTP Problems

2008-11-19 Thread Scott Sims
Hello.

The Bat! is driving me nuts.
It will not work with SSL SMTP settings with my ISP Internode or Gmail.

Internode Secure SMTP gives me this error when trying to send email
through The Bat:

!20/11/2008, 16:52:30: SEND - Message has not been sent. Server reply
- relaying blocked, read new mail, add 121.91.90.150 to forwarding or

20/11/2008, 16:52:30: SEND - Some messages were not sent - check the
log for details

Settings for Internode are:

Secure SMTP: securemail.internode.on.net - Port: 465

Gmail SMTP gives this error:

!20/11/2008, 17:08:52: SEND - Server reports error. The response is:
5.5.1 http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=14257

20/11/2008, 17:08:53: SEND - Some messages were not sent - check the
log for details

Using settings:

smtp.gmail.com (use authentication)
Use Authentication: Yes
Use STARTTLS: Yes (some clients call this SSL)
Port: 465 or 587

I've tried to activate the link Gmail gives me, but it still does not work!

Very frustrating. Standard non-SSL mail.internode.on.net works fine.
Problem is, I need SSL access so I can use with other ISP's.

Thanks in advance,

Scott

I support this request also, I have wanted it since version 2 and even put in a

Mathematically speaking, this idea would be tough to do with 15 accounts

Whether awkard or not, the BT works and gets attention from the

resolved and closed? The closed ones are not displayed by default, you
 have to change the filter.

If you did, it would be good if you post the links to them.

You want me to make the effort twice? Either the list or the tracker.
And since the tracker apparently doesn't get much attention, the list.

Well, posting the links helps others who may habe the same problem to
 add confirmations notes.

I am on the fence with this as well but lean towards your view of not

I think this is the real issue here with me. I love TheBat but guess
I get a little remise when I see nice GUI's in some of the clients

some of the things they are doing to handle efficiency, but they have
a long way to go before that thing is functional as a mail client.

IBM ReMail research for TB?

2007-02-13 Thread Nasuta, Scott
Hello tbudl,

I have been a paid TheBat! user for about 7 years now and enjoy it so
much I have found ways to use it wherever I can, including here at my
work instead of {cringe} Outlook 2003. TB simplicity and power just
works better than any email client I have tried for when you just
need EMAIL. TB has the best editor I've used and I constantly am
Alt-L'ing replies of users using bad formatting clients. TheBat has
also been literally the ONE app (well two since my wife lives in
Quicken) that has kept me from trying to go MS Windows-free for a bit
as well as I just can't get myself to like anything else.

But being a user of TB I do sometimes find myself maybe possibly
wanting a more modern interface. I know to be careful for what I wish
for as too much deviation from what makes us all like TB may come
back to bite, but one can wish a little, right?

One thing I always really thought (and wished) RITlabs would do is
leave the old concept of email behind a little and possibly itself
pioneer the way we read and interact with email. Something that could
make a name for itself. I came across this IBM research site that
they have done for email and some of its interface and ideas sound
awesome. As much as I like TB, I would love to be using something
like what is shown at the site but done in the RitLabs/TB way
(meaning no bloat, good code, etc).

The site is: http://www.research.ibm.com/remail/index.html

I am not suggesting that TB start in the direction of taking on
Outlook/Notes in having Chat Calendar (well maybe) in TB but more
of using some of the concepts presented in the inbox prototype which
email can become more efficient as we receive more and more each day.
Plus the presented interface looks ready for 2007 (and sweet) instead
of 2001 as TB still looks (still though not saying bad but just
saying).

I see TB 4.0 (well maybe 4.5) as a perfect time to maybe start to
head down the road less traveled.

Ideas, objections, thoughts?

Thanks

2006-10-09 Thread Scott
Is there any way to make something in the account window change colors/icons
when an account attempts to get mail and it fails? Yes, down in the log file is
a nice note saying such, but when you look at a column of 30 accounts (of
varying domains) and hear that failed sound, its annoying to scroll thru each
account watching the log file to see which account is not working.

Also, is there a way to take TheBat offline (not changing the settings with in

Howdy,
Dispatch Mail On Server / All Messages, only shows what messages have been
received today, since I restored.
It does not show what is in my inbox. (So I can get emails from the 30th till
Yesterday.)

Something has happened to the restore file. I have backed/restored while using
Gmail before. Not had an issue.
When I restored, The Bat would simply download any email since, I backed up
everything.

Getting frustrating. Hope something can be done.
Thanks :)

I clicked Enable POP for all mail. It's now downloading e-mail from all over

That's not good..Stupid Bat...I've never had to change an option in Gmail

My issue, is that I have NEVER had to do anything to Gmail. Even if I have
read the email online, it would still download.
I am not downloading the emails more than once. (Hence The Bat, should
download emails from the 30th upon restore.)
Gmail has now gone crazy, send 200+ emailes each time a send and recieve is
done...
Thanks :)

I am having problems installing my email. I recently had to re-install XP. I
did a full account backup on the 30th August. I recieved a new computer

I installed the latest version and The Bat and restored all my email.

The problem is that The Bat won't download all my email since the 30th. Only
what I have received today. How do I get it to download ALL email since the
backup?
I am using Gmail for your Domain. I have never had this problem before. It
won't work on my laptop either.

Hope it can be fixed.

There is no technical reason why not. However, the author doesn't recommend it.
Quote:

It is recommended to remove any other installed anti-spam plug-ins from The
Bat!. If you have several plug-ins installed, then the overall rating for
messages is evaluated according to special parameter in The Bat! settings. It
is Average by default and this means that the rating will be evaluated as
average between the rating obtained from each plug-in. Maximum and Minimum
mean that the maximum or minimum rating from all values will be taken as
overall rating. Plug-ins are not learning from each other and that is why there
is no sense in installing several plug-ins simultaneously. The classification
quality will be approximately equal to the quality of the plug-in with the
worst characteristics. Moreover, the less learned plug-in will be unable to
learn normally. The more learned plug-in will correctly classify the messages
unknown to less learned plug-in and therefore it will never learn such
messages.

I would have to lie down for a few hours in a darkened room to fully digest
that reasoning, but it seems plausible ;)

Bayes filtering popup message

2006-02-06 Thread Scott
I just upgraded to The Bat 3.65.03 and in there seems to be the Bayes anti-spam
filter already installed. Every time I mark emails as junk, there is a short
delay and then a window pops up telling me Scanning process of ## emails
complete. Well, I don't need to know this so how do I turn off that message
from popping up?

Norton and The Bat

2005-12-19 Thread Scott
When I am receiving email, Norton is watching the temp folder that The Bat
uses while it downloads emails. When a virus comes in, Norton pops up 2 windows
telling me its there and it will do something about it. So I get these 2 windows
per virused email and with all those out there, I can get a bunch.

Does anyone else go thru this pain? Is there a way to get around it? I tried
making an exclusion in Norton but I can not exclude just the files and do not
want to exclude the folder. The Bat tech support says I can not change the
folder it uses to download stuff. UGG!!!

Force Quick Template to override address book template?

2005-08-27 Thread Scott Moorman
Is there a setting or macro that will force a Quick Template to
override an address book template? For example, I have an address book
template for general messages to my assistant (a simple greeting,
informal signature, etc.). I also have a Quick Template, available for
use in new messages, with a substantial amount of standard text
providing instructions for setting up new files (i.e., when I need a
new physical file created and indexed, I send a message with this
template, filling in a few blanks identifying the client, type of
litigation, index keywords, and the like).

The problem is, the address book template overrides the Quick
Template. When I click in the editor, the new file template text
disappears, leaving only the informal greeting/signature. I know that
one simple workaround is to include a %CLEAR macro in the quick
template and insert it in the editor using the handle and Ctrl+space,
but I hate workarounds. If there's a macro that will take care of
this, I'd love to find it.

Thanks.

RO Several thoughts, actually. Most turn around adding the

RO You can either convince your contact to send a message with
RO some trigger string to you in order to be added to your AB
RO group (like an opt in mailing list) or send yourself messages
RO with their address in the from header.

RO After that you create an incoming filter that checks whether the from
RO address is in your AB group, in case it is it won't trigger, in case
RO it isn't the filter will add the address to the group and will also
RO sen a message.

This works. Actually I have two groups set up, one is for
addresses that I don't want added to the first group. The filter
check both and adds if both groups are missing the address.

Due to my desktop crashing completly (Motherboard, HD all fried, power
surge) I was not using The Bat to download my email and was instead
using web based for 2.5 months. In that period, I only used web based
and had ammassed around 4000 emails that I had not downloaded from
POP3.

Upon restoring my computer and The Batk Backup, I had 2.5 months worth
of email to sort. Approx 1500 would be SPAM. I managed to manually
click on 898 SPAM messages and move them to the junk folder. Here lies
one problem. The rest of the SPAM in my inbox would be the pretty much
the same, yet when I go to re-filter the messages, The Bat does not
pick up anymore SPAM (After learning from 898) which is annoying.

Also, my other filters no longer work, and when I create new filters
refiltering does not work for them either...When the refilter box
comes up it shows that all messages are being filtered which it
weird, as this does nor occur afterwards...

I am using The Bat v3 with the new SPAM plugin.

Is there any clues?
Cheers,
Scott

Re[2]: Problems With Spam Filters and Filters

2004-09-01 Thread Scott Sims
Howdy,
I deleted all traces of old filters in the sorting office, as well as
all traces of any anti-spam plugin. (Including the new version)
I then noticed that my filters started working again.
That one problem fixed.

Now when I reinstalled the SPAM filter and retaught it using 1591 SPAM
messages and around 2000 NON-SPAM messages, it still does not filter
my inbox (Which contains around 2500 SPAM and NON-SPAM messages).
It is also not catching any SPAM as it downloads.

Is there something else I can try?

Cheers,
Scott

For now it's OK -- fortunately, I still have the old .MSG files available from
pmmail, so I can delete the offending ones (fortunately) and re-import
them. That still leaves a rather cumbersome process for when this
happens in the future, though. Sigh. I *really* wish TB! would just do
the import process properly -- reset the time and date on the converted
file to match what it was before the import. It's not hard code to
write, so I think there's no good reason not to do so.

2004-05-16 Thread Scott
In which case IMHO it's kinda silly, annoying useless,
considering one can easily set up a folder to grabs all unread msgs
from all folders that excludes all other msgs, making it easier to
   read.

Not that silly for someone like me, with 10 accounts and 496 folders :)

I have about 30 accounts so I can see the value... well until I click on it and
just see about 10 folders called inbox... might be nice to see in the folder
list something about the account its from...

 1. When I want to download mails from the server, 4 or 8 mails are
downloaded without any problem. Then the hard disk starts to work and goes on
working for ca 15 minutes. During this time, the progress bar hangs and
doesn't show any progress. After that The Bat claims that the download is
finished. However, only the 4 or 8 first mails are downloaded. To download the
rest of the mails from the server, I have to click on get mails once again -
and this time I get the rest in seconds, no matter if it is only a couple, or
 50, or 100.

I face a similar problem where I can download a few emails out of different
email accounts fine, then when TheBat starts to download emails off the same
domain, 2 different accounts, The Bat will slow down or so that its hanging in
the status window. If I sit and wait 3-5 minutes, it will finally download all
the email and return The Bat to useable... I have been thinking this might have
to do with the AV/Antispam/Firewall I have and is one of the reasons I would
like a switch to have only 1 email account download at a time instead of a
multi-threaded downloading...

Closely related to this, I feel it would be useful when creating a new
account to have the option of basing it on an existing account rather
than having to start from scratch each time.

I agree with this, I edit the default templates each time I create a new
account. With variables that can get local info, I practically use a global
template that is the same for each account. I also have many config settings
that are the same on each account. Pretty much the only differences end up
being individual mail transport stuff.

Looking at Agent (newsgroup program by Forte) they have a default properties
setting and then each group gets a properties setting with a check box that says
override default. This lets all the groups be the same until I go in and
change the individual ones.

Stop checking email when the network disappears

2004-04-17 Thread Scott
How do I make The Bat stop checking email? My DSL (always on huh, right) has
been temperamental lately and just goes off so I go off on the DSL people.
When that happens, the 20+ email accounts that I check with The Bat just start
beeping at me... and when it gets those errors, it seems to slow things down.

So when I know there is an error with the network, how do I make The Bat quit
trying to check email until I know the network is back??

Feature Request: A Stop sign like icon on the tool bar that stops all email
checking activity, kind of like zone alarm.
