AVG Virus checker and TB

2002-12-08 Thread hmeyer
I have only just joined the list. I have downloaded avgbat9us.exe
but cannot get it to work. I keep getting the message that my version
(1.62) of TB is obsolete and I need version 1.60 or later. Can anyone
suggest a solution to this problem?
Thank you,
Hilton M

Hello hmeyer,

h I have only just joined the list.
Welcome Hilton :) You're going to love this ;)

h I have downloaded avgbat9us.exe but cannot get it to work.
Is that the Avast Anti-Virus? You can get it from here
http://www.webattack.com/newapp.php?id=105009 It was just
released on 12/07/2002 and I believe this is one of the
Anti-Virus software programs that work hand in hand with TB.

h Can anyone suggest a solution to this problem?
I hope I helped you out Hilton :)

Have you installed it manually or have you run the installation
package? You might give it a try to install it manually: open in TB!
the menu Options/Virus Protection, click on Add and External
Plug-in, locate in the AVG program directory a file with .BAV
extension and press Open.

Configuration: The configuration dialog will appear upon manual adding
of the plugin when you click on the button Configure.

No need. AVG have a plug-in for The Bat! You can download the
plug-in separately here:

AVG: http://files.grisoft.cz/softw/thebat/avgbat9us.exe

Or simply install the latest AVG.

No. TB! is an e-mail client, *not* a newsreader.

What about the Expand/Collapse All Threads command?

Expansion is supported; only collapsing is a bit awkward.

And what about the transparent mail ticker support?

What for?

for people used to TB! IMHO

I believe you didn't read the mail in the context. It was about the AVG
anti-virus plugin for The Bat!, not general features.

BK Where is TBs newgroup support?

I'd say TB! is an email client, not a newsreader. There are many good
newsreaders around, for cheap or free. ;-)

BK What about the Expand/Collapse All Threads command?

Have a good time. :-)

Marck, the AV test results of hackfix.org (with random trojans) seem
to suggest that AVG has rather low, 64% to be precise, detection rate.
Comparatively Kaspersky and NAV have 100 and 95 percent detection rate
respectively.

AFAIR similar tests in German computer magazines the number for AVG
seems right, although Kaspersky and NAV usually don't score that high
- virtually no virus scanner does. that's why F-Secure uses two
(three) *different* scan engines.

BTW, Norton gets always highest marks for its interface and usability
for newbies, but lacks behind in detection and speed.

Jim, it's nice to see someone thanking others as you do, but for one
it is not necessary - I think we all agree that thanks is - most of
the time - implicit. And even if you want to thank the friendly little
helpers on these lists, could you next time please refrain to *one*
message to all?

That would be really nice!*

*And it is not so much bandwidth I am concerned with (I am on a DSL

There's no need to publicly thank others for help like this. A
single reply thanking everyone would have been much better. Sending
a thank you response, five times, within the same thread wastes
bandwidth and is costly for some of the subscribers to this list.

What scared me about the hackfix.org tests is that few trojans in

administration tool akin to Back Orifice. I've had nasty experiences
with 'Girlfriend' in the past and to say that AVG only detects few
