The previous poster was, I believe, interested not in a refund, but in
a no-charge upgrade.  At least, that was my understanding.

Just recently, from out of the blue, I received an e-mail from
JP Software, which had attached to it, new keys for new versions of
their excellent products, 4DOS, 4NT, and TakeCommand.  Back in June of
this year, I had upgraded to the (then) current versions, and until
receiving this e-mail, I wasn't even aware of there being new versions.
The e-mail stated that they were sending free upgrades to everyone who
had ordered on or after June 1.  That's what I call excellent customer
relations!  This is some of the best, most solid, bug-free, and (to me)
valuable software that I have ever used, and I have been using it for
over a decade.  Highly recommended.

It is called Grace Period and normally the three months before the
release of a new major version are valid for this.

Adobe and Macromedia do this, too. Of course there is more money

Not exactly the same, but I was using a very old version
of Quicken for my accounts (bought when I retired in 1994,
I think).

When the millennium loomed, Intuit sent me a message
saying that, as my old version wasn't Year 2000 proof,
they would send me a free copy of a later version that
was.  So I'm now using Quicken Deluxe 98, though under
Widows XP Pro now, not Windows 98.

[BTW and OT: does anyone know if that version of Quicken
will work with SP2?]

I believe there was a small upgrade charge for people then
still using a 16-bit version of Quicken.

It seems Ritlabs are - despite the furore of the last few days - still far
more interested in being smartarses (sorry if that's a proscribed word, it's
not in Australia) than looking after customers.

It's not only the staff they've got replying to the beta list who think this
whole thing is funny, obviously.

Here's the response I eventually got off them after emailing sales:

Unofficial support isn't the same thing, as everyone knows. I get far more
support on using the  program through this list than I could ever hope to get
from the appallingly useless help-file.

Is that the point? I paid for a licence for a piece of software just a few
weeks ago, and now I'm told that to get any basic semblance of official
support, I have to pay again.

That's unlike any software company I've ever dealt with before. And, I guess I
should clarify that statement for some - not in a good way.

Version 3.0 is nothing more than an early beta. The version available
90 days ago was equally buggy. I can certainly understand the attitude
of the original poster.
